    A reciprocating pump is a positive displacement machine,liquid discharge pressure being limited only by the strengthof the structural parts. Liquid volume or capacity deliveredis constant regardless of pressure, and is varied only bydriver speed, speed reduction, and/or plunger/piston

    size changes.

    Determining plunger or piston rod load, calculating volumetricefficiency, and evaluating the types of devices available forpulsation control and inlet/discharge are critical in the pumpselection process.

    Reciprocating Pump Selection: The Basics

    The FluidUnderstanding the characteristics of the fluid being pumpedis essential to making the correct reciprocating pump selection

    for your application. To make the proper pump selection,you will need to know:

    What is the fluid composition (including % and type of

    solids present)What are temperatures at inlet and outletWhat is the specific gravity of liquid at outlet and inlet

    pressures and temperatures.Are corrosives and/or abrasives present in the liquidWhat is Vapor pressure at pumping temperature

    What is the viscosity of liquid at pumping temperature

    The CapacityDetermining the gallons per minute, barrels per hour or barrelsper day required to meet the needs of the application iscritical in pump selection process.

    The PressureEvaluating the pressure conditions required for any pumpingapplication will be required before the correct NOI reciprocating

    pump can be identified. To ensure correct selection, youwill need to know.What is the required liquid pressure at dischargeWhat is the required liquid pressure at inlet/suction (NPSHR)

    Formulas and factors to help pick the right pump.

    It is easy to select the right multiplex pump to best meetyour anticipated volume and pressure requirements.

    First calculate the hydraulic horsepower.

    Then determine the input horsepower required. Useinput horsepower to identify the smallest pump suitable

    for the application or the combination of pumps neededto meet the total requirement.

    Further selection of plunger size and operating speed

    Application

    Plunger pumps for fluid injection projects.The simplest plunger pump installation is in reality acomplex hydraulic system.

    While it is not possible to anticipate all of the operationalpeculiarities of a pump installation, it is to the operatorsadvantage to consider certain well-known design factorsand incorporate these factors into the station arrangement.The following will help determine these factors.

    Suction pressurePlunger pumps have certain characteristics which must beconsidered in designing the pump inlet system to assuresatisfactory performance. A positive inlet pressure isrequired by a plunger pump while running to enable it to fillon each stroke. This pressure is referred to as Net Positive

    Inlet Pressure (NPIP) and is measured on the absolutepressure scale. Fig. 1 shows that absolute pressure is thesum of local barometric pressure plus gauge pressure.

    NPIP is affected by many factors: pump speed, plungerdiameter, valve type and through area, valve spring load,

    temperature, and vapor pressure of liquid being pumpedas well as local uncorrected barometric pressure.

    A conservative approach to designing a pump inlet systemis to assume that any plunger pump in water injection servicerequires a minimum NPIP of 15 psia, above vapor pressure,while running. Obviously any NPIP above this minimum willresult in improved fluid end performance and providesinsurance against unpredictable changes in operatingconditions such as an increase in water temperature,

    lower tank water level, gas entrainment, etc.

    and can be ignored in NPIP calculations)

    Additional information concerning these factors:

    A. Supply Tank Elevation

    The supply tank should be located at an elevation as high aspossible with relation to the pump suction, taking advantageof the natural terrain. Since pipe friction is usually of a loworder, it is sometimes advantageous to disregard theaccepted rule to make the inlet line as short as possible andincrease line length in order to gain additional tank elevation.Before locating the pump and supply tank, make calculations

    to determine if an elevated tank with a long inlet line or a

    tank at a lower elevation with a short inlet line providesthe greater NPIP.

    B. Atmospheric Pressure

    This is the true local uncorrected barometric pressure atthe altitude of pump location expressed in psia. Refer toFigure 1. Note: Barometric pressure as reported by theweather bureau is normally corrected to sea levelconditions. The uncorrected reading must be used.

    C. Gas Blanket Pressure

    A gas blanket on the supply tank adds additional positivepressure to the inlet system. Furthermore, a gas blanket ofa few ounces prevents absorption of oxygen by the waterand reduces corrosion in the pumps and piping.

    D. Vapor PressureThis is the absolute pressure at which the liquid will change

    to vapor at a given temperature. Vapor pressure becomesmost critical when pumping fluid hydrocarbons; e.g.,propane, crude oil, butane, L.N.G., etc., or water at elevated

    temperatures. Table on page 5 reflects the vaporpressure/temperature relationship of water.

    E. Friction in Piping

    The inlet line should be as short as practical with a minimumof bends and fittings. A single inlet line between pump and

    tank or header should be adequate for most installations.When more than one pump is drawing from the same tank,it is best to run individual inlet lines from each pump to the

    tank. If bends or elbows are necessary in the line, theyshould be of long radius.

    F. Acceleration Pressure

    This is the theoretical inertia effect of the fluid mass in theinlet line and is probably the least understood factor affectingpump performance. In effect, it is the pressure necessary

    to accelerate the fluid at the beginning of each plunger stroke.The acceleration pressure may be quite large in high speedreciprocating pumps with long inlet lines. It is a function of

    the volume of fluid in the inlet line, the pump speed, numberof plungers, and pump displacement. The pressure required

    to accelerate cold water without cavitation may be calculatedwith the formula:

    From the above calculation it will be readily seen that largediameter inlet pipe is important. Tests have demonstrated

    that the acceleration pressure requirement can be practicallycanceled by locating a suction stabilizer in the inlet line asclose as possible to the pump intake. Therefore, the use ofsuction stabilizers on each pump is strongly recommended.

    Typical Inlet System (Open Type)

    Where:NPIP Required (Net Positive Inlet Pressure) = That absolutepressure in psia, above vapor pressure, as determined by

    test, required to fill the pump cylinders sufficiently so that nomore than a 3% drop in capacity from maximum is achieved(15.0 psia assumed in these examples).

    NPIP Available = That pressure in psia of liquid beingpumped existing at the pump inlet.

    Pa = Atmospheric pressure in psia due to altitude.(Three elevations - 0, 3000 and 5000 feet areused in our examples).

    Pv = Vapor pressure in psia of liquid being pumped.(1.7 psia in these examples).

    Pf = Pressure drop in psi caused by friction in piping

    and fittings. (.1 psi in these examples).H = Height of liquid above pump inlet measured in feet.P1 = Pressure in psig at pump inlet.P2 = Pressure in psig at tank outlet.

    To determine H (minimum height of liquid above pump inlet)solve the following:H(ft) = (NPIP Reqd. + Pv + Pf - Pa) x 2.3P2(psig) = H x .443P1(psig) = P2 - Pf or P1(psia) = P1(psig)+ Pa(psia)

    It will be seen that as the barometric pressure decreases, thelevel in the supply tank must be increased to provide thesame absolute NPIP at the pump inlet. If the vapor pressureor pressure loss increase, the supply tank level must beincreased proportionally to maintain the NPIP required.

    The above calculations provide minimum NPIP; a goodoperating practice is to provide an additional 5 to 10 feetof head for contingencies.

    Calculation of Inlet SystemTo provide sufficient Net Positive Inlet Pressure (NPIP) it isnecessary to determine the minimum height of liquidrequired in the supply tank. The interrelationship of vaporpressure of the liquid being pumped, the atmospheric pres-sure and the liquid level above the pump inlet is shown in

    the examples (Fig. 3).

    Low Inlet Pressure

    Where sufficient NPIP is not available, increased inletpressure may be obtained by the use of an inlet chargingcentrifugal pump. Total horsepower requirements are notincreased by the use of the charging pump as the powerinput to he main pump will be reduced by the powerrequirement of the charging pump.

    High Inlet PressureIn single acting pumps high inlet pressure actually increases

    the bearing loads and for this reason correction must bemade to plunger size selection if the inlet pressure is more

    than 5% of the discharge pressure. For triplex pumps theplunger size should be determined in the basis of an artificialdischarge pressure (Px) equal to the actual Dischargepressure (Pd) plus one-half the actual inlet pressure (Pi).Px=Pd+1/z Pi (for single acting triplex pumps)

    For quintuplex pumps the artificial pressure should be theactual discharge pressure plus two-thirds the actual inletpressure. Px = Pd + 2/3 Pi (for single acting quintuplex pumps)

    The work performed by the pump, however, is calculated inthe usual manner using the actual discharge pressure less

    the pump inlet pressure.

    Inlet and Discharge Piping

    Inlet Piping LineThe line from the supply tank to the pump should be asshort and direct as practical and of sufficient diameter tolimit the fluid velocity to 1 to 2 feet/second. It should be freeof any restrictions and all fittings should be full opening typewith low resistance to the fluid flow.

    Discharge Piping LineThe discharge line must not be smaller than the dischargeconnection at the pump; it should be of a diameter sufficient

    to permit a maximum fluid velocity of not more than 12feet/second. This line should be streamlined through gradual

    turns with friction not greater than those caused by 45 deg.long radius elbows. Do not install any bend directly adjacent

    to the pump discharge.

    By-Pass LineA by-pass valve and by-pass return line to the supply tank(not inlet line) are recommended for all installations. This willpermit loadless starting and facilitate checking the pumpand prime mover.

    Relief ValvesA relief valve must be mounted on the discharge line asclose to the pump as possible. No other valve should beinterposed between the pump and relief valve. The relief

    valve must have adequate relieving capacity and be set nohigher than 1.25 times the rated plunger working pressure.Relief discharge should be piped back to the supply tank(not the inlet line).

    Caution:

    Be certain that all pipe, pipe fittings, hose, etc., in the discharge line

    have working pressure ratings equal to or greater than the maximum

    pressure rating of the pump fluid end.

    Warning:

    Provide a means to prevent materials that may have been introduced

    into the discharge system (rubber balls, steel balls, etc.) from entering

    the discharge manifold on the pump or blocking the entrance to the

    pressure relief valve.

    Recommended Auxiliary Equipment

    Suction StabilizerAs previously pointed out the use of a suction stabilizer oneach pump is recommended.

    A simple vertical chamber with a closed top, water levelgauge and air charging connection will perform satisfactorily

    as a suction stabilizer if properly pressurized with an air orgas cushion on top of the fluid.

    Water absorbs air and gasses; therefore, this type of chamberrequires regular attention. Commercial stabilizers, equippedwith a rubber diaphragm separating the air from the fluid, areavailable and can be charged to a predetermined pressurewith air or nitrogen. This charge will normally be retained fora long period of time.

    Discharge Pulsation DampenersA pulsation dampener should be installed on each pump asclose to the fluid end as possible.

    All positive displacement reciprocating pumps dischargefluid in a pulsating manner. The harmonic relationship

    between the pump speed, the piping system and otherpumps in the system may cause pulsations to be amplifiedand result in transient pressure peaks far in excess of theaverage discharge pressure. These peaks are not alwaysobvious and seldom will be indicated on pressure gauges.

    The pump may sound satisfactory with little or no audiblefluid knock but, such pressure peaks subject the pump andpiping system to excessively high stresses. Many tests haveshown that a pulsation dampener minimizes these pressurepeaks and contributes to longer pump and valve life.

    The need for pulsation dampeners is increased wheremultiple pump installations are involved. When two or morepumps are discharging into a common header, the normalpressure peaks of each pump may occur simultaneously

    with the result that the pressure peaks for the system willbe considerably higher than for a single pump.

    Safety Devices

    Low Fluid Level ControlsLow fluid level shut-down controls should be provided onall installations to protect the pump from operations withinsufficient fluid to fill the pump. Operations under starvedsuction conditions will result in severe knocking and highshock pressures within the fluid end. The low fluid level sensorshould be located on the tank to assure the minimum NPIPat the pump inlet as described in Calculation on InletSystem on the previous page.

    Low Oil PressureLow Oil Pressure or low oil level shut-down is stronglyrecommended to safeguard the pump power end againstlubrication failure.

    Low Discharge Pressure Shut-downLow Discharge Pressure Shut-down is recommended asa protection against property damage due to dischargeline failure.

    High Discharge Pressure Shut-downHigh Discharge Pressure Shut-down is recommended asextra insurance against pump damage in the event of relief

    valve malfunction.

    The maximum displacement (volume) values listed assume 100% volumetric efficiency. Actual "in service" displacement (volume) will vary depending on the inlet piping and the fluid being pumped.

    The rated horsepower listed includes allowances for mechanical efficiencies and is the maximum horsepower allowed for the pump model.
