A3PS – Austrian Agency for Alternative Propulsion Systems
A3PS - public private partnership initiated by the Austrian Ministry
for Transport, Innovation and Technology as platform for strategic
cooperation with industry and research institutions beyond just
funding single R&D-projects.
Targeted platform with the common goal to support the development
and market introduction of alternative propulsion systems and
fuels and the joint mission to develop efficient, competitive and clean
vehicles as well as their energy carriers and infrastructure.
The main goal is a strategic cooperation between
industry, research institutions,
public administration and policy makers
developing a joint vision and roadmaps for its
implementation.

Hydrogen and Fuel Cells as Key
Technologies for Austria
11
Hydrogen and Fuel Cells as Key Technologies
for Austria
High potential in Austria to use renewable energy (sun, wind,
water, biomass, geothermal energy...)(33% as per end of 2013 in AUT)
for energy production and energy storage and in mobility.
Hydrogen is suitable for storing unsteady produced renewable
energy.
Strong automotive supply industry with focus on propulsion
systems (BMW, Opel/General Motors).
Austrian industry and research institutions are highly qualified in
the field of hydrogen and fuel cells.
12
Hydrogen and Fuel Cells as Key Technologies
for Austria – why now?
FCH for a clean and CO2- pollution free mobility with usual
refueling and without range limitation.
FCH- technologies are feasible now – recent topics are:
operating safety, durability and practical validation for
implementation in high quantities.
OEMs have announced the launch of FCVs in Austria for 2014-
2015 infrastructure must be implemented within the next 2-3
years for a successful introduction of FCH- technologies.
Besides mobile applications, Austrian industry and research
institutions can provide stationary and portable technologies
which are ready for serial production.
13
Hydrogen and Fuel Cells as Key Technologies
for Austria – why now?
All fuel cell and hydrogen components and systems are covered in
research and industry, but special expertise exists in:
Hydrogen tank systems (cryogenic and high pressure from Magna
for BMW and Daimler and for space applications)
SOFC-components and systems (Plansee for Bloom Energy, APU
from AVL, Treibacher for raw materials, TU Vienna and Leoben for
SOFC-research)
Engineering, development tools and test bench from AVL
(PEM and SOFC)
14
Hydrogen and Fuel Cells as Key Technologies
for Austria – why now?
All fuel cell and hydrogen components and systems are covered in
research and industry, but special expertise exists in:
Green hydrogen production from biogenic feedstock as well as
photovoltaics (Güssing, Profactor, Joanneum, TU Vienna, Fronius)
Hydrogen refilling stations (in Graz with additional R&D-facilities, in
Vienna from OMV building up network to neighboring countries)
….. how to use synergies?
15
Strategic cooperation between industry, public
authorities and research institutions
In order to concentrate and to coordinate the Austrian knowledge and
competence in the field of Fuel Cells and Hydrogen the FCH Cluster
Austria was initialized in 2012 and is coordinated by the A3PS.
