REBECCA VAN DEN BERG

Prize-winning soprano Rebecca van den Berg recently graduated with distinction from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she was awarded the Susan Longfield Prize, the Tracey Chadwell Memorial Award, and a place on the prestigious Opera Course. During her time there, she performed the role of Amine La rencontre imprevue (Gluck), The Nice Caroline The King goes forth to France (Sallinen) and Fanny La cambiale di matrimonio (Rossini), where she was described in Opera Magazine as ‘…the star of the show, with dramatic and vocal depth.’

Rebecca’s recent operatic projects included Nanetta Falstaff for Iford Arts and Soprano Jacob Lenz, Creuse/1st Phantom (cover) Medea, Livia (cover) Caligula for English National Opera, for whom she also covered Kristina in the multi award winning production of Janacek’s The Makropulos Case in 2011. Rebecca sang the role of Siren in Handel’s Rinaldo, conducted by Ottavio Dantone and directed by Robert Carsen at the 2011 Glyndebourne Festival, where she has also covered the roles of Norina Don Pasquale and Despina in Cosi fan Tutte, as well as singing Daphne in Charpentier’s La descente d’Orphee aux enfers as part of the Jerwood Young Artist project. Her other operatic roles have included Anne Trulove The Rake’s Progress, Barbarina/Susanna La nozze di Figaro (Opera East and Iford Arts), Galatea Acis and Galatea for New European Opera’s inaugural concert performance, and Giulia La scala di seta (Rossini) for British Youth Opera. Passionate about the song repertoire, Rebecca’s international recital engagements include recitals in the Paxos Chamber Music Festival where she premiered Geoffrey Burgon’s The Road to Love for soprano and string quartet, recitals at the Stowarzyszenie Milosniko in Gdansk; Castalia Hall in Ireland; and a recital of French and Polish song in Hotel de Soubise, Paris, as part of a collaboration between New European Opera and ‘Jeunes Talent’. In the UK Rebecca has sung at St Martin-in-the Fields, St James’ Piccadilly, London, the Oxford Lieder Festival, the Edinburgh Festival and the Britten-Pears School at Snape Maltings. Rebecca is also an experienced oratorio singer performing Haydn’s Creation in German and English in various venues in the UK, as well as far flung places such as the Faroe Islands. She has sung the Queen of Sheba in Handel’s Solomon, with the Solomon Choir and Orchestra and Chandos Anthems with the Academy of Ancient Music under Stephen Cleobury as part of the Cambridge Summer Music Festival in King’s College Chapel, Cambridge. Bach highlights include CPE Bach Magnificat, B minor Mass at St James Piccadilly and Bach’s solo Cantata BWV202 at the Iford Festival with the Peypes Ensemble Rebecca is proud to be a Britten-Pears Young Artist, a Wingate Scholar, a New European Young Artist and a Susan Chilcott Scholar. She has benefited from the expertise of John Evans, Yvonne Kenny, Graham Johnson, Sarah Walker, Helmut Deutsch and Emma Kirkby. She currently studies with Lillian Watson and Gary Coward. Rebecca will sing Miss Wordsworth Albert Herring for Mid Wales Opera and Opera Theatre Company in 2013/14.
