Ebb and FlowWater Treatment / Flood Preventionin New York’s Subway System

This proposal decentralizes the management of storm water in a network along New York’s subway system. Sloping medians and catch basins drain water into settlement tanks and then into giant reservoirs.

This filtration and collection of water is mirrored in an art installation above the subway platform. As the vessels collect water, the weight of the system shifts. A capillary system of fiber optic tubes brings light and water into the underground spaces. During dry periods, the public can access and enjoy these cavernous spaces.

Ebb and Flow beautifies the city and creates new public spaces, while cleaning, storing, and recycling water.

Steven Holl, Simmons HallPartners: Joe BrennanAyesha Hussein, Jenna MillerThe building envelope of Simmons Hall consists of a combination of load-bearing and non-load-bearing prefabricated concrete wall panels, known as PerfCon. These perforated, pre-cast reinforced concrete panels are installed in conjunction with cast-in-place wall elements. Each load-bearing PerfCon panel consists of pre-cast concrete reinforced with a specific strength of rebar, which has its strength color-coded in the adjacent window soffits on the façade. The non-load-bearing PerfCon panels do not have pre-cast concrete in them. Instead, they include gypsum board sheathing to encase batt insulation filler and have an inch of cement plaster on metal lathe to disguise the panels as their load-bearing concrete counterparts.

The large voids in the façade are not clad with PerfCon panels, Instead, they are clad with perforated aluminum panels that are supported by 2” x1” tubular aluminum mullions that are anchored directly into the cast-in-place concrete slab. In some locations, this alternative cladding system behaves as a window wall, with the direct-glazed 1” insulated glass sitting in aluminum framing that sits between cast-in-place floor slabs.

Lateral wind loads are greatest along the long (384’) facades of the building that face the athletic fields and adjacent railroad tracks. These wind loads are distributed to the building’s six cast-in-place shear walls and three elevator cores. These shear walls and cores run from the top floor to the basement of the building and act as vertical cantilevers with moment reactions occurring at their bases as they distribute the lateral loads back into the ground.

Nike Lab

The nike lab is an athletic research facility; public programs, which include a retail store, reception cafe, and a semi-permeable basketball court are housed on the bottom floors, while the middle floors contain space for design and fabrication. The uppermost floors host an auditorium, a suspended running track, and a tennis court for evaluating product performance.

The exterior shading system of our building utilizes customized bi-fold panels of perforated metal that open and close based on solar and programmatic conditions throughout the building. The idea to use such a system stemmed from the large bi-fold hangar door needed to enclose the basketball court on the ground level of the building. The flexibility of the system, its ability to change and adapt to various conditions is also reminiscent of the state of the art materials nike is researching within the building. The motion of the façade system is also reminiscent of the action happening within the building by the athletes nike studies and outfits. In this sense the exterior shading system is a kinetic sculpture that celebrates the interior productions. The varying amounts of the visual transparency offered my this system allows the nike lab to communicate openness or secrecy on any given day, an asset to a building devoted to both state of the art research as well as public events.

The shading system is found on the south, east and west facades and is measured to correspond to the curtain wall system from which it is suspended. Each shading module consists of 4 panels of perforated metal set within a frame. Each of these frames is attached to rolling brackets on an aluminum track. The tracks are attached to an 18” wide exterior catwalk that is attached to the curtain wall mullions, this allows for easy installation, removal and repair of the system.

RockingLounge Chair

Sitting in a chair is a uniquely Western phenomenon that shapes our social interactions. Th e Rocking Lounge Chair is a playful variation on an American classic that experiments with posture, visual fi eld, and movement. Imagine lazily rocking at work, brainstorming while staring at the blank canvas of the ceiling, or better yet - the sky. What diff erent conversations might you have with a family member, while rocking next to them? Th e Rocking Lounge Chair shifts your relationship to your own body, your surroundings, and your relationship to others.

With alternating cherry and ash wood, the rails are constructed from seven 1/8” pieces that are bent and laminated around a 40” radius formwork. Th e structure resists inward stresses and also distributes the load evenly across the six foot length of the rocker.

Housing + Food ProductionGoat Farm and Cheese Factory in Harlem Partner: Michelle O’Carroll

Th is project explores the possibility of uniting public housing with food production as a means to stimulate economic revitalization. Inspired by programs such as Heiff er International which have successfully introduced animal husbandry and skill-building into repressed communities, the intervention accomodates the traditional repitoire of housing program as well as living quarters for 8,000 mountain goats(including facilities for milkand cheese production).

Th ree diff erent types of housing units:yuppie, family, and commune- are designed to optimize the desired level of interaction between human and animal. Th e architecture is driven by the duality of these two creatures: the former, who prefers the horizontal and the latter who prefers the diagonal.
