What is happening in Europe with palm oil in food?1. Palm Oil use in Europe in food decreases

2. Strongly related to worsened Palm Oil image in Europe on nutrition, sustainability and safety

3. Food producers and retailers move away from palm oil

4. Increases use of free from palm oil labels to make it work

=> moving away from palm oil is no solution!§ Not to overall improve nutrition

§ Not to quality aspects of food

§ Not to sustainability aspects of food

=> AND it negatively impacts producers moving to sustainable practices

The European market is shrinking by 5-10 % or 100 –150 million Euro each year

Palm oil debate in Europe

§ Generally consumers have little awareness of palm oil, it’s functional benefit in food and how it is produced

§ Focus debate is on sustainability and health with issues closely linked

§ Increased media attention and political debate on health and sustainability

§ Governments, NGOs and food industry publicly support sustainable palm oil

Debate is intense with mixed focus

The image of palm oil in 2018 is:§ Improving in Italy§ Stable in France, Belgium (and most non-European countries)§ Worsening in Germany and Poland§ Bad in Austria (1st year survey)§ Getting ugly in Spain, which has become worldwide “worst in class”….

The “palm oil free” claims gain in awareness and remain for most people synonym of “better for my health” and “better for the environment”.

In fact, where are we?§ Relative (small 3-5%) role of palm oil in

deforestation and big role of sustainable palm oil in preserving rainforest

§ 69% palm oil in EU for food is sustainable§ NGOs support: Say yes to sustainable

palm oil:

No palm oil is no solution, sustainable palm oil is

Palm oil alternatives are not necessarily healthierThe proportion of saturated fats in palm oil is lower than the saturated fat content of other fats for similar food applications.

Palm oil has been a successful alternative to replace trans fatty acids§ Palm oil has emerged as a

versatile, cost-effective solution for replacing trans fats in products that require a solid fat for functionality.

§ Today the average intake of trans fats in many European countries is below recommended thresholds and no longer a public health concern.

21

A mix of palm oil and liquid oils enables structure and optimal nutrition in margarine

22

§ Structure is provided by palm oil or palm oil fractions

§ MUFA and PUFA are delivered via liquid oils

Foods ‘Free from palm oil’ are not healthier than foods with palm oil

Palm oil debate 2018§ Passionate debate in many European countries

§ Less debate in European Countries with strong

sustainable palm oil commitment

§ Emotions rule over facts

33

engaged

passionate

Increased debate

Enough is enough

§ EPOA covers most of the EU market§ And most of the palm oil

production worldwide§ We are ready to switch to 100%

sustainable palm oil

Private sector: 100% Sustainable Palm Oil 2020

§Supported by:

35

69%of palm oil imported

into European refineries was CSPO

in 2016

An estimated

60%of palm oil used bythe European foodindustry was CSPO

in 2016

Sustainable palm oil contributes to at least 7 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s)1. Huge role reducing rural poverty

2. Key food ingredient to help feed the world

3. Development rural areas

4. Improved education

8. Creating jobs in producing countries & EU

10. Boosting socio-economic development

13. Sustainable palm oil helps halt deforestation

It can be done§ All media issues on palm oil monitored in local language through national initiatives and where

needed addressed§ Italy turning point: TV campaigns against palm oil stopped and no palm oil claims generally

considered illegal§ French turning point: more balanced media reporting

§ Nutella tax stopped by French Alliance in cooperation with producing countries and government more balanced and actively involved in supporting sustainable palm oil

§ Close cooperation with Greenpeace and WWF made Segoleyne Royal apologise for call to boycott Nutella and to even sign the Amsterdam Declaration to support sustainable palm oil, more balanced media communication

§ Amsterdam Declaration to support SPO: 7 countries have now signed, all signatories supportive of sustainable palm oil (and not likely to vote negatively related to palm oil)

It can be done§ Industry members of 10 national initiatives have formally committed to use and defend

sustainable palm oil. Spain joined in June, EPOA in Poland Task Force with Retail, oleochemicalsand local companies and organisations

§ Active lobby / voting advice with ESPOAG and country initiatives resulted in more constructive EP report on palm oil and deforestation

§ Nis supporting sustainable palm oil and outreach activities to government and retail§ Widely distributed fact based communication material and positions / Q&As with aligned

messages on nutritional and sustainability aspects of palm oil§ NGOs (e.g. WWF, Conservation International and Solidaridad, etc) willing to cooperate with

EPOA and even Greenpeace publicly stating that palm oil is no solution.

‘No palm oil is no solution!’

What is needed to rebalance the debate?

lead the market transformation to 100% sustainable palm oil in Europe and push for global change through contribution to the UN SDGs

improve the image of palm oil in food on sustainability, nutrition and safety

39

What is needed to rebalance the debate

1. Pro-active storytelling about the positive impact of sustainable Oil Palm on the UN Sustainable Development Goals - SDGs
