Reasons Why Mere Inclusion In Special Education
Is Not Enough
Not All States Have the Same Standards for Special Education• The quality of special
education varies greatly across the different states of the US.
• These differences are quite profound in the states of California and Oregon.
• In Oregon, occupational therapy is not seen as an important part of special education, unlike most other states.
Inclusion in Special Education is considered to be the Only Solution• In inclusion, major focus goes
on rote learning, giving lesser consideration to the special needs of the student.
• In the state of Oregon, for instance, inclusion is considered to be the only option for children with Autism or even Down’s syndrome.
• Special education requires special services such as occupational therapy, direct instruction and speech therapy.
What is Occupational Therapy?• Occupational therapists help
autistic children with their sensory issues.
• Such an approach helps them to process information much faster using multiple senses.
• They also help children enhance their fine motor skills by learning how to hold a pencil or cut properly using scissors.
What is Direct Instruction?• In this approach, concepts and
skills are taught to students in a step-by-step manner.
• Teachers are trained to deliver the information in an orderly manner so that students can understand the lessons better and quicker.
• Direct instruction makes use of repeated practice and review along with regular student-teacher interactions.
What is Speech Therapy?• Speech therapy helps kids
with language and speech disorders.
• In speech disorders, kids face issues in producing sounds and articulating clearly.
• If not treated well, they can cause social communication issues and difficulty in expressing oneself verbally.
