Good Reasons To Have Children
You love children and want to raise them. • If you are considering having children, make sure
that it is something you truly want to do. Children are a major decision that will affect the rest of your life.
Bad Reasons To Have Children
You're lonely.
• Let me cut to the chase here: Yes, you will adore your baby and you will never be "alone" -- but motherhood/fatherhood can be one of the loneliest, most isolating experiences of your life.
Your "clock" is ticking.
• Women can only have children until they hit a certain age. Sometimes it can feel like you “have” to have a child now, even though you may not be totally ready. This is sort of valid -- but only if you've wanting a baby for a long time anyway.
All your friends have one.
• When all your friends have children and it’s all they can talk about, you may feel tempted to have children yourself. This is not a good reason to have a family! If you really want to know what having a baby is like, ask them to drop the kid off at your house for a week! (Chances are they'll say YES.)
People won't stop pestering you about it. • Perhaps those nagging
family members or friends think it would be an awesome idea. Trust me, no matter how much that relative loves your new child, they won't be anywhere near as helpful as you might expect. It is your child – not theirs.
You think a child will save your marriage. • No matter what you have heard or may think,
having a child add additional stress and strain to any living situation. If there are problems in your relationship, a child will most likely make it worse.
You want to quit your job/career.
• If you don’t like your career, maybe you should search for a new job instead of having a child. Being a stay at home parent can be a great thing! But remember, children are expensive! Be sure that your family can afford for you to quit your job BEFORE having a family.
You think it'll be "fun."
• Sure, it is fun… sometimes. But a lot of the time it isn’t. Having a child is a lot of work that can be extremely demanding.
You love babies!
• I hate to break it to you, but babies do not stay babies forever. They’re only babies for a hot, messy, screaming minute; eventually they become toddlers, and before you know it, they’re teenagers. If you have children because you love babies, you may not be ready for the many years of parenting to come.
You think it’s the next step.
• Maybe you dated, got married, and now have been married for 3 years. Logically, the next step in life is to have children! Think so? Maybe not. Only have children if you WANT children.
