Also…remember the imperfect is used to express actions that happened repeatedly in the past, actions with no definite beginning and no definite end, to talk about what one used to do, one would do in childhood, weather, time, physical description, age, emotional and mental state in the past., to talk about what WAS HAPPENING, expressions with TENER.

Adverbial expressions such as: generalmente, por lo general (generally),a menudo (often), muchas veces (many times), todos los días (every day), de vez en cuando from time to time, occasionally), todos los años (every year), los lunes (on Mondays, every Monday), los martes (on Tuesdays, every Tuesday), siempre (always), nunca (never), etc. imply continuous action in the past and require the use of the imperfect.

Imperfect progressive tense = the imperfect tense of ESTAR + the present participle This tense is used to express what WAS HAPPENING. Often the imperfect progressive is used with the preterite tense when the preterite

(one time only action) interrupts the action that WAS HAPPENING.*Estaba esquiando cuando me caí y me torcí la rodilla.

I was skiing when I fell and sprained my ankle.Ana estaba corriendo cuando se lastimó el codo.

The impersonal SE / The passive voiceSE is used with the 3rd person singular and the 3rd person plural of the verb to express the idea of the indefinite subjects such as YOU, THEY, PEOPLE, ONE, etc. This is also passive voice where the subject is acted upon as opposed to active voice where the subject does the action of the verb. Passive voice

Se habla español.You speak Spanish. They speak Spanish. They speak Spanish. One speaks Spanish. Spanish is spoken. (Spanish, the subject here, cannot speak, but rather it is implied that it is acted upon, that is someone speaks it.)

Sometimes the reflexive pronouns se, nos and os are used to express the idea “(to) each other.” These are called reciprocal actions.

Los novios se abrazaban y se besaban.The bride and groom were hugging each other and kissing each other.

Por lo general nos saludábamos con un abrazo. También nos dábamos la mano.We generally(usually) greeted each other with a hug. We also would shake hands.

Vosotros os hablasteis, ¿verdad?You spoke to each other, didn’t you?
