FAQS ABOUT THE NFPA 2017 NEC®

What is NFPA 70®?NFPA 70® is also referred to as the National Electrical Code® or NEC® and is a United States standard for the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment. It is part of the National Fire Codes series published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Is the NEC® a law? While the NEC® is not itself a law, state and local law often require businesses to follow NEC®.

Who reviews the National Electrical Code®?The NEC® is developed by NFPA’s Committee on the National Electrical Code®, which consists of 20 code-making panels and a technical correlating committee.

What is ANSI / NFPA 70®?The NEC® is approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). It is formally identified as ANSI / NFPA 70.

When is the National Electrical Code® Published? The NEC® is updated and published every three years, with the most recent edition having come out in 2017.
