• View Pablo Picasso’s “First Steps”Discuss the meaning of abstraction

• Discuss why artists abstract • Discuss techniques that cubists use to abstract • Watch David Hockney portion of “Behind the Scenes” DVD • Sketch 5 abstract faces (finish for homework- put list of

techniques on wiki). Limit colors if needed to help the composition.

• Draw final on heavier paper.• Choose media appropriately, use chalks or paints to color

large areas first; do details last with marker, crayon or colored pencil.

• Mount and attach a plastic flip-back label that shows your understanding of the cubist techniques.
