Matter

Definition : anything that has mass and volume.

- Cell phone is one of an example of matter because matter means anything that has mass and volume, cell phone also has its mass and its volume.

Page 4: Real life chemistry

Not matter

Definition : opposite to the matter; things that do not have mass and volume

- Music does not take any volume as well it does not have mass. Music is expressing one’s thoughts which means it is not a matter.

Page 5: Real life chemistry

Pure substance

Definition : matter that is consists with only one type of particle

Ex) aluminum foil

- The reason why aluminum foil is pure substance is because it only contains one kind of substance which is pure substance’s definition.

Page 6: Real life chemistry

ElementDefinition: substances that cannot be

separated into simpler substances by chemical means. substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means.

Ex) silver, neon, copper

- Element means substances that cannot be separated into simpler. Gold that I chose is also a substance that cannot be separated into simpler form which means it’s a pure substance.

Page 7: Real life chemistry

compoundDefinition : a pure substance

composed of two or more elements whose composition is constant.

- Table salt is an example of compound because table salt is It is a combination of sodium and chloride

Ex) sugar, salt

Page 8: Real life chemistry

mixtures

Definition : two or more substances that are not chemically combined with each other and are able to separated

- Since Coke is a mixture of water, sugar, flavorings, and carbon dioxide gas, coke is an example of mixture.

Page 9: Real life chemistry

Heterogeneous mixturesDefinition: Mixtures that are easy to

distinguish due to the large size of their particle.

Ex) sugar, sandy water, pizza

- Pizza is categorized under heterogeneous mixture because pizza is very well distinguishable due to its large size of ingredients. Since we can see the mixtures, pizza is heterogeneous mixture.

Page 10: Real life chemistry

Homogenous mixturesDefinition: Mixtures that are hard to

distinguish since their particles are tiny small to see.

Ex) blood, beverage. Wine, oil + alcohol

- chocolate milk is an example of matter because in this milk, lots of things are mixed together such as fructose, milk, and a little amount of chocolate. However, those ingredients are not possibly seen through human eyes. Thus, chocolate milk is an example of matter.

Page 11: Real life chemistry

mass

Definition : the measure of the number of matter contained in an object, unlike weight

- As you can see, two objects are on the balance beam and tilted to one side. By this, we can know their mass are different.

Page 12: Real life chemistry

volume

Definition: the amount of space an object takes up

- There would be no volume at all if there was no doll inside the wood building. Since the doll is inside, we can say the building has volume.

Page 13: Real life chemistry

density

Definition: mass per unit volume of a substance ( ex: its ability to float)

- A ship floating on water is an example of density because although it is uses buoyancy, it also uses density to float.

Page 14: Real life chemistry

Viscosity

• Definition: how thick liquid is, thickness of liquid

I chose glue to illustrate viscosity because viscosity is all about how thick liquid is. However, glue is not a liquid but glue itself which depends on viscosity

Page 15: Real life chemistry

state

Definition: the states in which matter can be found, solid, liquid and gas

- Steam that’s shown in the picture is one of an example of state because it is gaseous state. Also, an ice cube is solidified state and water is liquid state. An ice cube is frozen and water can flow anywhere easily.

Page 16: Real life chemistry

conductivity

Definition: ability of a material to conduct heat or electricity

- I chose toaster to explain conductivity because toaster conduct heat and bakes the bread.

Page 17: Real life chemistry

Physical changes

• Definition: the changing of the form or state of a substance but not the substance itself

Even though I ripped tissues, only the form changed, its substance didn’t change.

Same as tissue, the paper is crumpled but its substance itself didn’t change. Therefore, it is physical change.

Page 18: Real life chemistry

Chemical changes 1• Definition: a chemical reaction

happening within a substance which changes it into a new substance with different properties

- Paper’s ashes is chemical change because they cannot be brought back to their original forms after the change has taken place.

Page 19: Real life chemistry

Chemical change 2

- Popcorn is another example of chemical change because like the first example, it cannot be brought back to their original forms after putting into the microwave oven.
