You may submit a J.D. applicationbetween October 1 and March 15. Wemake admission decisions on a rollingbasis. You are welcome to apply usingthe paper forms in this section of thisviewbook, or you may apply electroni-cally through LSAC.

ELECTRONIC APPLICATIONS
Candidates who apply electronicallymust pay the application fee onlineusing a credit card and must certify theirapplications electronically.
SELECTION PROCESS
We make decisions on individual appli-cations as quickly as possible, althoughthe time required may vary from case tocase. We evaluate each application thor-oughly, reflecting our belief that the
quality of the educational environmentat Vanderbilt Law School benefits fromconsidering a range of information farbroader than your GPA and LSATscore. A rolling selection process allowsfor extending the time frame of consid-eration where appropriate, ensuring thateach application receives the individualattention it deserves and allowing us tomake careful comparisons of applica-tions completed at different times. Therolling process also means that appli-cants who take the December or Febru-ary LSAT are not disadvantaged.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
If you completed a bachelor’s degree atan institution outside the United States(including its territories) and/or Canada,in addition to providing the materialslisted above, you must also:
1) Register with the LSAC J.D. Creden-tial Assembly Service, and
2) Take the Test of English as a ForeignLanguage (TOEFL) if the languageof instruction at the foreign institu-tion conferring your bachelor’s degreeis not English. Please request thatETS send your TOEFL score directlyto LSAC for inclusion with your CASreport, using code 0058.
J.D. TRANSFER ADMISSION
Law students who have completed oneyear of study in a J.D. program at anABA-approved law school may apply fortransfer admission to Vanderbilt.Transferapplicants may submit applications fromMay 1 through July 1. Transfer studentsare not eligible for joint degree programs.
To apply as a transfer student, you must:
� Complete the J.D. application form,indicating you are applying for trans-fer. You may use the paper forms inthis section of the viewbook, or useVanderbilt’s electronic transfer appli-cation available through LSAC.
� Provide a personal statement, whichaddresses the reasons you would liketo complete your J.D. at Vanderbilt orindicates a need to be located inNashville.
� Provide two letters of recommenda-tion, one of which should be from afaculty member who taught you atyour current law school.
� Provide an official transcript showinggrades for all first-year courses, yourrank-in-class at the end of the firstyear, and a letter of good standingfrom your current law school.
� Register with LSDAS and have yourreport sent to Vanderbilt.
� Enclose a $50 non-refundable applica-tion fee.

The Admission Process
VISITING STUDENTS
J.D. students at other ABA-approvedlaw schools may apply for visiting student status by submitting the samematerials required for transfer appli-cants (except an LSDAS report).Please provide a transcript from yourlaw school showing grades for all academic work you have completed.
EARLY DECISION DISCONTINUED
Please note that Vanderbilt Law Schoolhas discontinued its Early Decisionprogram. Candidates who are certainthey will attend Vanderbilt if admittedare encouraged to apply by earlyNovember. Although we cannot guar-antee a decision by mid-December, wewill make decisions on all applicationsas quickly as possible.
Approximately 80 percent of VanderbiltLaw students receive some form offinancial assistance through the school.About 60 percent receive merit- orneed-based scholarships in varyingamounts, with a median award of$14,000 in 2005-06. We make financialaid decisions on an ongoing basis begin-ning in February, and we notify recipi-ents as decisions are made. Financialaid packages may include merit scholar-ships, need-based scholarships, scholar-ships based on combined merit andneed, or educational loans. All financialassistance is offered for the three yearsof attendance at Vanderbilt with no spe-cific academic standing attached forrenewal each year.
LAW SCHOOL MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS
All admitted J.D. applicants are auto-matically considered for merit scholar-ships provided by the law school.These scholarships are awarded invarying amounts.
LAW SCHOLARS MERIT AWARDS
Each year, Vanderbilt provides severalmerit awards valued at more than fulltuition to admitted applicants througha competitive selection process. To beconsidered, applicants must completethe Application for Law Scholars MeritAwards. We recommend that you sub-mit this form with your application foradmission, but you may submit it sepa-rately after you have applied for admis-sion. In either case, the deadline forsubmitting Law Scholars applicationsis January 10. You’ll find more informa-tion about Law Scholars Awards onpage 33 of this viewbook.
NEED-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS
Some scholarships are awarded on thebasis of demonstrated financial need.For consideration, you must completeboth the Need Access Form and theFree Application for Federal Stu-dent Aid (FAFSA). International stu-dents who are not eligible to submitthe FAFSA may still complete theNeed Access form to be considered
for need-based scholarship assistance.
February 15 is the priority deadline forconsideration for a need-based scholar-ship, and we recommend all forms besubmitted by this date. Submitting theFAFSA and Need Access forms by thepriority deadline increases the possibil-ity of receiving a need-based scholar-ship. Forms submitted after the prioritydeadline will be considered to theextent that funds remain available.
When you complete the FAFSA, listVanderbilt University’s Title IV Code,003535. You may submit an electronicFAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov or obtain apaper FAFSA form through a financialaid office at a college or university. TheFAFSA should be completed as soon aspossible after January 1.
In completing the Need Access form, list Vanderbilt University Law Schoolcode 0035301. The Need Access formcan be completed at www.needaccess.org.Parental information is required forapplicants ages 25 and under.

most law graduates face the
need to repay student loans, if
you choose to practice law in a
public interest organization,
Vanderbilt Law School offers a
Loan Repayment Assistance
Program that pays from 25 to 50
percent of your annual loan
debt for up to 10 years after
graduation. The amount of loan
assistance for which you are
eligible is based on your salary.
While all admitted applicants are auto-matically considered for Law SchoolMerit Scholarships as described onpage 32, consideration for the followingmerit awards requires submission ofthe Application for Law Scholars MeritAwards by January 10. The selectioncommittee reviews candidates’ LawScholar applications along with theirapplications for admission. All admit-ted applicants who have submittedtimely Law Scholar applications will beconsidered for all available Law Schol-ar Awards. Recipients are normallynotified in February.
The following Law Scholar MeritAwards include full-tuition scholar-ships plus a $5,000 annual stipend,making each currently valued atapproximately $130,000 over threeyears. Scholarships and stipends arerenewed annually for recipients in goodstanding at the law school.
THE JOHN W. WADE SCHOLARSHIP
The John W. Wade Scholarship, con-sidered the highest honor provided toincoming students, is awarded toselected candidates who possess supe-rior academic records and personalqualities that reflect potential for out-standing contributions to the legal pro-fession. The selection committee seeks
well-balanced individuals whose intel-lectual capacity, relationships with oth-ers and endeavors reflect former DeanJohn Wade’s commitment to scholar-ship, service and the legal profession.The scholarship includes full tuitionplus a $5,000 annual stipend for eachof the three years of law study.
THE PATRICK WILSON SCHOLARS
SCHOLARSHIP
This full-tuition scholarship, sponsoredby the law school’s Patrick WilsonScholars, is awarded to selected incom-ing law students who demonstratesuperior academic performance andstrong potential for professional andpersonal leadership. The awardincludes a $5,000 annual stipend foreach of the three years of law study inaddition to full tuition.

The Elliott Cheatham Scholarship isawarded each year to a member of theincoming law class who demonstratesthe combined qualities of scholarshipand leadership that Professor Cheathampossessed. The Cheatham stipend of$5,000 is added to all amounts of merit-or need-based scholarship assistanceawarded by the law school. Cheathamscholars are selected by the law school’sselection committee and the CheathamScholarship Trustees.

Law Scholars Merit Awards
All applicants to the J.D. program must

We encourage you to use the LSAC onlineelectronic application form. You may alsocomplete and submit the paper appli-cation form in this viewbook. Pleasetype or print the information requestedon the form.
In addition, you must provide a copy of offi-cial college transcripts from all colleges anduniversities you have attended and an officialreport of your score on the Law SchoolAdmission Test (LSAT) through the LawSchool Data Assembly Service(LSDAS), for which you should regis-ter when you register for the LSAT. Youcan register for the LSAT and LSDASon-line at www.lsac.org.
Please submit a minimum of two letters ofrecommendation. We recommend thatyour letters be submitted through the
LSDAS service, which is described inthe LSAT/ LSDAS registration infor-mation. However, if your recom-menders prefer to send their lettersdirectly to us, we have enclosed recom-mendation forms for their use. If yourschool maintains a permanent file ofrecommendation letters or forms,please have copies of these sent to usdirectly by the school.
Letters should be from members of the fac-ulty of your undergraduate or graduateschool, preferably faculty members whoserved as your advisers on research projectsor who taught you in more than one course.If you have been recently employedfull-time or have been in military serv-ice, you may submit letters from thepersons best able to comment on yourperformance. If you have been out ofschool for several years, you may sub-mit letters from employers if academicrecommendations are not available.
