fees and costsUnderstanding your uni fees and the HECS system can be a bit of a challenge. The fees you will pay depend on the courses you take.

You’ll receive two bills via email at the start of each semester. The first is for the cost of the courses you’re enrolled in, and the other is for the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).

All students can pay their fees upfront. Australian citizens (and holders of a Permanent Humanitarian Visa) can make a part payment/part deferral, or total fee deferral via a HELP loan.

Australian citizens (and holders of a Permanent Humanitarian Visa) may also defer SSAF via an SA-HELP loan. Please note that this is a separate HELP loan and requires a separate application

The census date (31 March in Semester 1 and 31 August Semester 2) is the last date you can drop a course without having to pay for it.

You can pay your fees through myHub, BPAY, or in person at Australia Post.

Tuition FeesThe amount of money you pay depends on a number of factors including the program and courses you choose to study. Australian citizens and Permanent Humanitarian Visa holder are eligible to defer their tuition fees through a HELP loan.

You can find full details on tuition fees here or by following the QR code.

SSAFThe Student Services and Amenities Fee pays for non-academic services on campus, such as sporting facilities, food outlets and career services.

The amount you pay varies depending on whether you study on or off campus, and will be sent to you as a bill at the beginning of each semester. Search ‘SSAF’ on the Uni’s website for more information.

Other costs and supportOther costs for your study will include things such as textbooks, and course equipment and resources depending on your program. This may include things such as lab coats or uniforms.

Along with HELP support there are other financial support options for students including scholarships (see page 24), and student loans and hardship grants for cases of genuine need. Students may also be eligible for income assistance through Centrelink. You will have to check your eligibility with Centrelink.

Program HandbooksProgram handbooks contain all the information you need to know about your degree, such as where it’s taught, admission requirements and the courses you need to study to complete the degree. Program handbooks can be found at newcastle.edu.au/degrees

managing your workload

How many hours will I have to do?Students studying three or four courses per semester are considered full-time students undertaking full-time study.

Students studying one or two courses per semester are considered part-time students undertaking part-time study.

One course equals 10 units, which generally equals 10 hours. This will be a combination of face-to-face (lectures, tutorials, labs, group work, workshops, practicals) and personal study. Full-time study requires 30-50 hours per week for class work, study, reading and assessments.

TimetablesBefore you enrol you should check the timetables for each course and try to coordinate your class times. Timetables can be accessed by selecting the ‘Timetable Search’ icon in the myUON Student Portal. You’ll need to search the course code (available in your program handbook) for each course timetable you’re looking for.

OrientationOrientation is in the week before semester starts and is a great opportunity to become familiar with your University before classes begin.

Each faculty has its orientation on a specific day and you should attend the orientation day relevant to your program. On this day you can meet staff and other students, discover your campus and learn more about being a University of Newcastle student. You will also have the opportunity to attend a number of workshops which will help develop your academic writing skills and make you familiar with the University's online systems.

A typical faculty Orientation Day may include:

Orientation is also a time to meet other students and have lots of fun.

There is also lots of free entertainment all across campus including expo stalls, live music, barbecues, roving entertainers and displays from clubs and other fun activities. You can also take part in the Campus Quest – a fun treasure hunt style activity designed to help you know the campus.

accommodationMoving out can be a daunting yet exciting experience. If you’re thinking about taking this step towards independence, there are a number of accommodation options open to you depending on your situation.

On campusLiving on campus is a unique student experience. UON Student Living is the University’s on-campus residential precinct and provides a home away from home for many students.

Students studying at Ourimbah are able to apply to live on campus at Blue Gum House - the smallest of our residences offering independent living in a picturesque location. Blue Gum House is a close-knit community and home to 26 residents who live in unit-style residences offering modern surroundings and a quiet study environment.

Applications for UON Student Living are taken all year round, but we advise students to apply early as living on campus is a popular option. If you don’t receive an offer to live on campus for Semester 1 you will be placed on a waiting list and may be offered a room if others don’t accept their offer or if they vacate their room over the year. Search ‘UON Student Living’ on the Uni’s website for more info.

Page 25: Ready, Set, UON - Regional Campuses

newcastle.edu.au/current-students | 25

Off campus and HomestayIf you intend to live off campus and need to arrange accommodation we recommend that you start your search early to make sure you find a place that is best suited to your needs. The University employs an off-campus accommodation officer who can assist you with your search. We also provide an off-campus accommodation database with listings of rental premises in the surrounding areas. Search ‘Off-campus accommodation’ on the Uni’s website for more information.

parking and transport

Central Coast (Ourimbah) CampusOur Central Coast and Port Macquarie campuses have free parking for students. Remember to only park in the general parking areas or you will receive a fine. You should aim to get to uni with plenty of time as the parking spaces do fill up quickly, particularly in the first weeks of semester.

Motorcycle ParkingThere is free parking for motorcycles at all campuses. Motorcycles must park in marked motorcycle parking bays (check the campus map).

Mobility ParkingIf you have an RMS Mobility permit, you can park in the Disabled, Staff and General Car parking spaces.

Students who need closer parking due to a temporary medical condition can apply for the University’s disability access permit.

Parking Signs and FinesUnless you have a special parking permit or RMS Mobility permit, you must always park in the ‘General’ parking areas.

Certain sections and levels of car parks are designated for staff only, and you will receive a hefty fine if you park there.

The same goes for non-existent parking spots. Sure, you may see an empty area of grass or a section of footpath that vaguely resembles a parking spot, but resist the urge to park there. You will receive a fine for parking outside of the designated car park areas.

Take some time before uni starts to drive around campus and know where the best car parks are for you.

Page 27: Ready, Set, UON - Regional Campuses

newcastle.edu.au/current-students | 27

Public transportPublic transport is a great way to avoid the hassle of driving and parking, and you can always do some extra reading or relaxing on the bus or train – you’ll be the calm and prepared one when you arrive at class!

Central Coast CampusTrain: Ourimbah Station, located on the Newcastle & Central Coast line, is a 15-20 minute walk to campus.

Bus: Local buses stop outside the main quadrangle on campus.

Port MacquarieBus: Timetables for Port Macquarie services can be found by visiting here, selecting the ‘Maps’ dropdown menu under ‘Quick Search’.

Bike RacksCycling to uni is a great transport option. Cut your carbon emissions, save money and get some exercise.

Bike rack locations at Ourimbah are located on the Central Coast map. You can find them by selecting ‘More options’ and then turning ‘Bicycle Rack’ on.

Student Travel ConcessionsIf you're a full time, on-campus student, you may be entitled to a travel concession. Stickers for your student ID card are available from January each year from the Student Hubs. If you are getting the travel concession sticker for the first time you will need to complete an application form. You can print and complete this form and take it to a Student Hub for processing, otherwise printed copies are available at the hubs for you to complete while you are there. You need to update this sticker each year.

Students at the University of Newcastle can sign up for cheaper and more convenient travel with Opal. Eligible students will be able to access all the benefits of Opal, including cheaper fares, daily travel caps and weekly travel rewards, providing free travel after eight paid journeys in a week.

Find out how to apply for an Opal Card here.

getting around campus tourSmall enough to be friendly and relaxed, but big enough to provide an outstanding opportunity to thrive, our Central Coast campus offers outstanding facilities in a picturesque setting and a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. But any uni campus can still be overwhelming when you come to it for the first time. During Orientation we encourage you to take a campus tour. Other students will show you around campus – and they all know what it’s like to be a ‘newbie’ so they will know the best ways to avoid getting lost during those crucial first few weeks at Uni. Students at our Port Macquarie campus are also able to take a campus tour as part of Orientation.

student lifeWhile study and academic work is the focus of your time at UON, student life is so much more. Any time you’re on campus you can find a wide range of activities, events and things to get involved in to make your student experience a full, rich and satisfying one. Being a part of what happens at Uni outside the classroom – from volunteering to sports, clubs and societies and social activities – can contribute to making you a fully rounded graduate with life skills and experience, attributes that are also highly valued by future employers

Clubs and SocietiesJoining a club is a great way to make new friends and get involved in campus life. There are many clubs on campus with something for everyone from sporting, social and cultural to religious and everything in between. Orientation is a great time to find out more about clubs and societies as many of them will have stalls, hold fun demonstrations and sign up new members. Be sure to head over and check them out! Search ‘Campus Life’ on our website to find out more about clubs and societies.

Student AssociationsYourimbahYourimbah the students’ association for Central Coast Campus students. It provides students with food and retail services, entertainment, sports and clubs, as well as helping out with any issues that may arise.

VolunteeringIf you’re looking to add awesome new skills and experience to your resume, or simply to have fun and meet new people, then volunteering might be for you. There

Page 44: Ready, Set, UON - Regional Campuses

44 | Ready, Set, UON

are many ways you can volunteer on campus. Maybe you would like to be a Student Mentor or get involved with iLEAD – the Uni’s International Leadership Program.

Some of our volunteers also help out at the gigs, parties and major events that are part of student life. Student volunteers might work at things like BBQs, exams and our art galleries or they might be part of Yak Media – UON’s student media, made up of Yak TV, Yak Magazine and Yak Digital. There are heaps of volunteering activities on campus to suit most interests, so get involved! Search ‘Volunteering’ on our website to find out more.

Events and ActivitiesYou’ll soon discover that a University campus is kind of like a small village – with events and activities happening all the time. Clubs and societies will often open up their events to all students to help grow their membership, so that can be a fun way to experience campus life.

You will also notice things like free BBQs, movies, live music, arts and culture and performances dotted around campus.

Sport and FitnessWe have a fully equipped gym in the Exercise Sports Science and Psychology Building at our Central Coast campus. Here you can access high quality exercise equipment, complete a health screen and fitness testing or take advantage of health and fitness programming - all for free. For more info click here.
