Programming software for PANASONIC KX-TD1232/816/308 PBX

This program was developed to simplify parameter editing of the popularKX-TD1232, KX-TD816 or KX-TD308 PANASONIC super hybrid PBX (KSU).

Important! This program is not capable of setting the parameters of other PBX models from Panasonic like KX-T123210/11 or KX-TA308/616/624 PBX. If you have such asystem, please check out our other programs.

Using this program you'll no longer have to use the cryptic command numbersystem (entered on the phone from extension 101) to set your PBX parameters. This will make configuring your PBX much easier in other ways as well, likebeing able to use a real keyboard to enter extension names. All parametersare grouped in a logical manner according to the function, not based on thecryptic command number sequence in the KX-TD1232 user manual. Anotherimportant feature is that you can now back up your PBX configuration to yourcomputer. A true lifesaver if your PBX has some type of failure causing itto lose programming or if you ever have to replace your system with anotherKX-TD1232. Since you can save your parameters to your computer, you canalso work on the configuration anywhere that you can bring your computer. When you're ready to implement the changes, simply go to your phone room, connect your computer to the KX-TD1232 and dump the new configuration tothe system.

To use this program, you'll need a PC-compatible computer running eitherWindows 3.1, 3.11 or Windows 95/NT. To connect your computer to the PBX,you'll also need a special connection cable (see pin assignments below).Important! The cable used to connect the PBX to your computer differs fromcommon 'modem' cables used to connect modems to computers. The software willnot work without the correct cable. The correct cable is basically a'null-modem' cable, but be careful - there are a few different null-modemschemes and most will not work with the KX-TD1232. It is highly recommendedthat you use the cable described below. The two connectors used to make thecable are available from Radio Shack or just about any decent electronicsstore. If you lack the skill to make your own cable, any electronic servicestore should be able to make one for you for a fee.

To install the program, run Install_TD.exe. You can then select a subdirectorywhere the package will be installed (default is C:\KXTD1232). The programitself can be launched under Win 3.1 - see below. After successfullyinstalling the program, double-click the phone icon (located in the KXTD1232folder) to launch the program. Be sure that you have valid parameters in theCOM option of the Settings menu. Connect to the PBX by clicking the'Connect' button. You should now be able to ascertain the PBX status byclicking the 'read speed' button on the toolbar of the program. The difference between this read-only version and the full-featured versionis that this version can only read and view current PBX settings. While youcan edit and save settings to disk, you will not be able to upload yourchanges back to the PBX. You can, however, change the time and date of thebuilt-in PBX clock. The main purpose of the read-only version is that itallows you to test for program functionality and compatibility with yourPBX. If you find the program useful, you can buy the full-featured versionwhich is write-enabled. See file HOWTOBUY.DOC for more details.

2. Troubleshooting:

The most common reason for connection failure is usually due to either usingthe wrong cable, a problem with the cable or the cable was not correctlymade. There are a few different ways for pin assignments to be configuredfor a null-modem cable, but you absolutely must use the pin assignmentsoutlined above. Recheck your work - this is the most common reason peoplehave trouble with the software.

The second most common reason for a connection failure is improper portsettings for the PC and PBX. Both must be configured identically. There is agood way to test for proper communication, that covers the PC, cable andPBX. The test is to receive call logs from the PBX. To run this test:

Page 3: Readme

a) Connect the PBX to the PC with the cable described above.b) Run any terminal program (for example, Terminal.Exe from Win3.1,HyperTerm from Win95, TELIX, PROCOM, etc.) Configure it for the simplestterminal mode - TTY. Set the COM-port parameters of the port so they are thesame as the ones for the PBX.c) Make a few calls through your PBX - after a short delay you will seeentries appear on the terminal screen describing your call. You'll see thenumber you dialed as well as the extension number from which you made thecall.d) If you still don't see any log information, try pressing Ctrl+Q. If youstill don't receive anything, check the hardware. There is probably aproblem somewhere inside the cable.

Third - check password used to access programming interface of the PBX. Program uses '1234' string by default - look the dialog Settings->System of the main program menu to change it.

3. Installation ProblemsThe actual Programmator program can be used under Win 3.1, but Install_TD.exeonly works properly under Win95/NT. A workaround to this dilemma is totemporarily install it on a Win95 or NT machine and then:

a) Copy the PROG.EXE and PROG.HLP files to the computer running Win 3.1.c) Manualy install the font HELVECYR.FON - it is unpacked by Install_TD.exe intothe subdirectory WINDOWS\FONTS.

If this is still a problem, just send me email and I'll send you a zip filethat contains the installed components.
