    These will help you determine the kindof information you should be gettingfrom the reading:

    Will you be expected to discuss what you arereading? In class? With the teacher?

    Will you have to write about what you are

    reading? Will it be a formal response or moreinformal? Will you be tested on the material?

    You can highlight important ideas that you

    Annotating

    Annotating basically means writingin your book. This can be anything

    from circling words you dont knowto writing ideas in the margins.

    This will help prepare you to discussthe reading and, eventually, writeabout it.

    Summarizing:

    A summary retells, IN YOUR OWN

    WORDS, what a passage is about.

    WRITING A SUMMARY:

    Restate the passages main idea IN YOUROWN WORDS.

    Restate the passages supporting points.Add words and phrases between sentenceswhere necessary to connect ideas.

    Reread the original passage to make sureyou havent left out anything significant.

    There was a girl named Mary who had alamb. The lamb was small and had verywhite fur. It always wanted to be where

    she was, and one day it followed her toschool. The other kids thought this wasreally funny because they were not used to
