    READ THE TEXT AND ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS.

    Amnesty International

    A British lawyer called Peter Benenson decided to found Amnesty Internationalone day in 1961 in the London underground when he read in the newspaper that twoPortuguese students had been arrested for toasting liberty and freedom. Heimmediately wrote an article announcing the launching of a one-year campaign called"Appeal for Amnesty". The object was to obtain amnesty for all political and religious

    prisoners of conscience. Within a month more than a thousand people from variouscountries had sent in offers of practical help.

    In 1977 Amnesty International was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and in 1978the UN Human Rights Prize. Today Amnesty International has over one millionmembers, supporters and subscribers. Lately, we have seen the eastern countriesintroduce, step by step, codes of human rights protecting their own citizens and

    though, of course, there are very black spots in the world, nonetheless all over theglobe human rights is a word that is on every tongue.

    Amnesty International is a worldwide movement independent of anygovernment, political persuasion or religious creed. It plays a specific role in theinternational protection of human rights. Amnesty International seeks the release of

    prisoners of conscience; these are people detained for their beliefs, colour, sex, ethnicorigin, language or religion who have not used or advocated violence. AmnestyInternational works for fair and prompt trial for all political prisoners and on behalf of

    political prisoners detained without charge or trial and, besides, it opposes the deathpenalty and torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment ofall prisoners without reservation.
