Reading Fundamentals Course Expectations Mr. Laurich Room 704 Bell Work Put your first and last name on the upper right hand corner of the paper along with the class name and period. Mr. Laurich Reading Fundamentals Period 3 Tell me what you expect from the class and from your humble (sort of) instructor using complete sentences. Do not turn in until the end of class! Course Scope This one-year course incorporates a laboratory where students work individually to improve achievement in reading and writing. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of this course. This course does not fulfill English credits required for high school graduation. This course fulfills one elective credit required for high school graduation and may be repeated once. English Translation The goal of this course is to improve your reading and writing skills. We will use a variety of methods to do this including, videos, power points, reading material and more. Passing this class will not only help you pass your other core classes (English, Science, Etc.) but it also gives you one elective credit. Needed Supplies Binder or Spiral Notebook (with paper!) Composition Notebook Colored Pencils (10) 2 pencils (preferably #2 pencils) Pens: 2 Red and 2 Blue/Black Homework (if applicable) Reading Material Highlighters (Pink, Yellow, Green) Tardy Policy Students are expected to be on time to all classes. Students are to be inside the classroom when the tardy bell rings. Students arriving late to school should report to the attendance office, located upstairs in the Asia Office. Students will be given five (5) minutes during each passing period; do not loiter in the hallways. Tardy Policy Tardiness to class is not acceptable. Students arriving to a class after the tardy bell has rung will receive consequences aligned with the Legacy High School Tardy Policy. A student who is more than 30 minutes late to class will be counted absent from that class. Classrooms will be locked when the tardy bell rings. Random tardy lock-out sweeps will be conducted. Students out of class without a pass will be issued an RPC. Teachers will issue a tardy if a student is late to class. They will mark tardy in Infinite Campus. 1 st tardy = Verbal Warning, student initials on tardy slip. 2 nd tardy = Verbal Warning, student initials on tardy slip. 3 rd tardy = Call parent, student initials on tardy slip. 4 th tardy = Tardy paragraph is assigned, student initials on tardy slip. 5 th and additional tardies = Referral to the deans office with documentation of progression Tardy Policy Grading Scale 90% - 100%A 80% - 89%B 70% - 79%C 60% - 69%D Below 60%F Grading Percentages Classwork15% Homework30% Formal Assessments & Projects40% Participation10% Journal Entries5% A Note on Participation Classroom participation is 10% of your grade. Participation is NOT just coming to class every day! Participation means: you attend class regularly take notes keep your work up-to-date raise your hand to answer questions volunteer to read work as a group member and in general contribute to the class in some manner other than simply sitting in your seat. Make-up Work (NRS and CCSD Regulations and Policy 5113) Make-up procedures (After any absence, a secondary student is required to initiate contact with the teacher(s) to obtain appropriate makeup work within three school days immediately following the absence. Once contact has been made with the teacher(s), specific makeup work must be completed and returned to the teacher(s) within a reasonable length of time, to be determined by the teacher and communicated to the student/parent or legal guardian. The makeup work must be returned to the teacher(s) by the specified due date if it is to be acknowledged. Other Absolutely NO food or drink in the room (bottled water only)! I will confiscate it It attracts ants, cockroaches, earwigs, scorpions, spiders and other undesirable creatures. Passes are given to the nurse and restroom only. Passes are NOT given to visit other teachers. One student out of the room at a time. Candy and gum are not permitted in class for the reasons given above. Plus, they tend to create a sticky mess regardless of how careful you are. Other All personal property is the responsibility of the student. School property that is given to a student is the students responsibility to care for and return when requested. Lost textbooks and other materials will result in fines. No nuisance items. Nuisance items can and will be confiscated. Nuisance items include, but are not limited to: tablets, phones, headphones, Nintendo 3DS, 2DS etc., pagers, skateboards, basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, hackeysacks, photos, lotion or anything else that is causing a distraction in class Cell Phones & Ear Buds CCSD policy allows students to have cell phones. but they must be turned to either OFF or SILENT during class time. Cell phones and such that go off during class will be confiscated. Ear buds MUST be hidden from view or you lose them and the device they are used with... Cell Phones & Ear Buds You get 2 chances to give me your phone etc., If you refuse, you go to the dean Your phone goes to the dean if I have to take it If I catch you charging your phone I take it all, no questions Late Work Late work will be accepted but will be penalized 20%. If you are absent you have 2 class periods to turn in your missing work otherwise it becomes late. No Name Work Gets tossed in the trash No exceptions! My Three Rules 1.Respect The Classroom 2.Respect fellow students 3.Respect The Staff RESPECT THE CLASSROOM This Means: Throw garbage in the garbage can No writing on desks or chairs No food, drink, or gum in the class Do not touch posters, flags etc. RESPECT STUDENTS This Means: Keep hands, feet and comments to yourself Do not touch things that are not yours Be respectful when another student is speaking etc. NO RACIAL/SEXUAL SLURS OF ANY KIND... RESPECT STAFF This Means: Any adult in the classroom No cursing Respect my property Stay in your seat, etc. Discipline I follow the school discipline plan I talk to you about your behavior I send you next door for the remainder of class I talk to your parents about your behavior You see your counselor You go to the deans office Discipline Instant referrals Cutting or walking out of class Cursing out people in class (I can spell that!) Your parents then have it read to them by the dean! Theft Fighting Verbal confrontations that lead to a possible fight Refusal to give me your nuisance item Dress code Refusal to follow basic instructions (Im not sitting there!) Being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol Ticket Out The Door Also referred as TOTD Tell me three things that you learned that will help you in this class
