Reading for analysis and evaluation is one of the most important aspects of your work in English.
As we saw before the holiday, this is one area of the course where we may struggle. This means that we must get our skills in place early on.
Get out your yellow ‘Reading’ jotter.
Inside your jotter, take the heading ‘Tips for Reading’
Tips for Reading 16/8/13
Here are some tips to help you with this paper…
•Read the question carefully•Check which section of the passage you have been directed to.•Never leave a question blank. •Check how many marks the question is worth. Ensure your answer is detailed enough.•Follow the instructions in your own words and quote with care.
One of the most important skills that you need to develop as you seek to improve your skills in English is your ability to read texts CLOSELY. You must do this to examine the writer’s meaning and the way in which they have used language.
Today, you are going to begin a your study of close reading and you will be introduced to some of the formula and strategies that you will need to know.
Formula:• Locate relevant parts of passage (Look
for quotes or line references in question)
• Consider how many marks are available.
• Highlight in passage pieces of relevant text- match these to marks available.

1. While some people dread the return to school after the long summer holiday, I am often quite relieved. After six weeks of lazy days, it is nice to get back into a routine and get your brain working again.
In your own words, explain why the writer feels ‘relieved’ to return to school after the long summer holidays. (2 marks)

The idea that you need to put into your own words, is the idea of ‘routine’. This means having a structure to your day.
This means to be thinking and keeping your mind active.

The press went wild for the first official family portrait, but it left me feeling cold. While they try hard to look like the average family, this picture reminds us all that they are far from average. It is too stage managed. From the perfection of their Hollywood smiles to the vast green space that they call their back garden, it is clear the new generation of Royals will be just as distant as the past.

You have to put up with untrustworthy removal men
You need to sort out and box up all of your belongings.
I have learned more from my grandparents than I have from any other person in my life. They were always the first people that I turned to when I needed advice about anything. They had lived through difficult times and always knew how to put my problems into perspective. They always had the ability to show me that no problem was too big to overcome.
What, according to the writer, did he learn from his grandparents?(2 marks)

The 2014 Commonwealth Games rescued a seemingly dying institution. These were the most important Commonwealth Games in a generation. Following the disastrous Games in Delhi, where athletes performed in near empty, hastily constructed venues and against the twin shadows of corruption and poverty, Glasgow had to rediscover the ‘friendly’ nature of the friendly Games.
In your own words, why were the 2014 Commonwealth Games so important?

In your own words, why were the 2014 Commonwealth Games so important? (2 marks)
The Games were important because they had to be better than the last games in India where few tickets were sold and the stadiums were of poor quality.
The true success of the 2014 Commonwealth Games had little to do with the sporting moments themselves. The true stars of the Games were not the athletes: it was the city that shone brightest. Glasgow showed the entire world that it was a city filled with fun, laughter and a contagious sense of humour.

The writer believes that the biggest success was the city of Glasgow itself because it proved to the world what a great place it is.
The new Scottish football season will be one like no other. For the first time in the league’s history, three of the biggest names in Scottish football find themselves exiled from the wealth and status of the top table of the Premier League. It will be a tricky year of adjustment as the giants of Edinburgh join their Glasgow rivals Rangers in the lower leagues for the first time.

It will be a season like no other because three of the leagues most successful teams will not be playing in the top division and will instead play at a lower level.
The imprisonment of Rolf Harris was a deeply unsettling experience for millions. Not only were his crimes utterly despicable, countless people felt that they had been tricked into loving and respecting this warm, jovial entertainer, only to discover that behind the laughter and the artwork lay a much more sinister and dangerous side.

• Contrast questions ask you to identify where a writer has deliberately used two very different words or phrases together to express an idea.
Formula: • Quote words or phrases that
convey BOTH sides of contrast.
• Explain how the first word/ phrase conveys one side of contrast
• Explain how the second word/ phrase conveys other side of contrast
• While the sharp angled skyscrapers of New York surround you from all corners, forming an uncomfortable barrier between you and the world beyond the city, the London skyline is softer and more welcoming being decorated with a mixture of curved, historic monuments and spiked glass towers of modernity.
• What according to the writer is the contrast between the New York and London skylines?

• ‘Sharp angled skyscrapers’• This indicates that New York is filled with very tall
and box like buildings that surround the people below.
• This is in contrast to London and…
• ‘softer and more welcoming’, ‘mixture’• This indicates that in London, the buildings are
much more rounded and vary from the ornate buildings of the past to the much more modern structures of today.
• It would seem that the Simon Cowell boyband formula has changed a little. In the 1990s we had 5ive (yes it really was spelled like that). They were promoted as the so called ‘bad boys of pop’. They were frequently in drunken fights while the lyrics of such musical masterpieces as ‘Slam dunk da funk’ and ‘If ya getting down’ had overtly sexual undertones and suggested they would prefer a one night stand to a lasting relationship.
• Fast-forward a decade and One Direction, the latest creation on Cowell’s boyband production line, are presented as the squeaky clean, wholesome boys next door. Their lyrics promote sweet puppy love and genuine affection while they look as though they are likely to head to bed by ten with a cup of cocoa (once they have brushed their teeth and kissed their mums goodnight)

• The London Olympic Games appeared to unite the world in sport and celebrated a global spirit of community and cooperation that the Commonwealth Games of 2014 simply cannot hope to emulate. While the Olympics united the world, the Commonwealth Games can at best hope to bring temporary unity to an outdated and barely understood community of small and irrelevant nations.

Back in 2003, a certain Justin Timberlake swaggered onto the Brits stage full of confidence and bravado. He twisted and gyrated his way through a medley of his beat heavy pop fluff. He even had the cheek (if you will pardon the pun) to get a little too close to pop princess and national treasure Kylie Minogue.
Fast forward a decade and it would seem that the wannabe rap star has blossomed into a credible artist. Gone are the tracksuits, replaced with sharp tailoring, while the beats of the music have been replaced with some soaring falsetto and sophisticated sounds. The music is now genuinely credible and of its moment.
How does the writer make the contrast between the performances clear?

One hundred years ago, the river Clyde roared with the sounds of the shipyards. The bands of the river were characterised by a steady drumbeat of rivets and welding as some of the grandest ships in the world were born.
Now, the banks of the once industrial river are almost silent. The giant cranes and proud yards having been all but replaced by office blocks, hotels and media centres. The Clyde is still busy; but it has lost some of its soul.
What contrast does the writer identify about the changes in the River Clyde? (2 marks)

‘roared with the sound of the shipyards’In the past, the River Clyde used heavy industry and was very noisy and productive.
‘replaced by office blocks, hotels and media centres’Today, the river is dominated by less industrial industries, and many of the shipyards have closed.
In the past, Alex Salmond has come across as being a somewhat aggressive politician. He has been accused of being arrogant and the camera has all too frequently caught him smirking at opponents who dare to challenge his vision of an independent Scotland.
Fast forward to the most recent debate with Alistair Darling and there was no sign of the smug attitude of the past. Instead Salmond appeared nervy and at times incoherent. He had nothing to smirk about.

Another question that is designed to test your understanding of the meaning of the text is the so called link question.
You will be asked to show how one sentence provides an effective link in the writer’s argument.
The argument need not be a discussion. Think of it as more of a progression of ideas…or a line of thought.
Some tips…
Generally (but not always), the linking sentence will stand at the beginning of the paragraph.
Part of the sentence (again generally the first part) will link back to the previous topic, while another part of the sentence will introduce the new topic.
Such questions are generally worth 2 marks in the examination.
Think of a link question as being a little bit like a ‘Where’s Wally’ puzzle.
You could look for a long time and still not manage to see the link.
• Formula:1. Read the linking sentence carefully
2. Quote a phrase from the linking sentence that refers BACK to the point/ ideas expressed in the last paragraph. Explain link in your own words.
3. Quote a phrase from the linking sentence that INTRODUCES the point/ ideas expressed in the following paragraph. Explain link in your own words.
• The crowds had been gathering for hours before we arrived. They lined the streets of Ekwendenni cheering and singing; desperate to catch a glimpse of the exotic visitors that they had heard so much about.
• The warm welcome that we received could do little to prepare us for the hardships to follow. Within minutes of being escorted into the school, we walked through the town where the poverty was all too clear. Rubbish was piled on the roadside, while an unimaginable swarm of children played wearing tattered clothes.
• How does the first sentence of paragraph 2 act as a link in the writer’s line of thought?

standard of living that the writer witnessed in the town and just how poor the people were.
• Apple’s iPod has come to symbolise a generation. It has captured the spirit of the age and has led to a succession of similar products such as the iPad tablet and the ubiquitous iPhone. It seems that Apple could do no wrong and their profits rose steadily.
• As we approach the second decade of the 21st century, the march of Apple appears to have come to a halt. Following the death of their technical wizard Steve Jobs, the underwhelming response to the latest iPhone and the rising threat of the Samsung Galaxy, it seems that Apple no longer has it all its own way.

• As the midnight deadline drew closer it seemed increasingly unlikely that Congress and The White House would reach an agreement. In failing to cooperate, they have created a situation where thousands will go without social security payments, where countless schools and public buildings will close and where the most vulnerable will be left in need.
• Yet amidst the doom and gloom, there remains some room for optimism. The shutdown of the federal government will at least force the two parties to sit down and talk to each other in a bid to reach a compromise. This is surely no bad thing!
