WHAT IS SCHEMA?
SCHEMA = Making connections with what you know and what you are reading.
TEXT-TO-TEXT: Readers relate what they read to information from something they have read, seen, or heard before.
TEXT-TO-SELF: Readers relate what they read to personal experiences.
TEXT-TO-WORLD: Readers relate what they read to enhance understanding of self, text, and life - bigger “idea” connections

QUESTIONINGREADERS SHOULD:

VISUALIZING
Good Readers create MOVIES in their minds
as they read.
Visualizing may also be referred to as
SENSORY IMAGES.
Once an image is created in a reader’s mind, it is permanent.
There is NO right or wrong image for a reader.

DETERMININGIMPORTANCEWhat does Determining
Importance Mean?Understanding the importance of text features and the author’s intended message.
Good Readers understand the CENTRAL IDEA of the TEXT & the author’s message.
The brain is like a strainer, it must sort through the text to save the most important details & facts.

INFERRINGUse your own knowledge and clues from the book to figure out what it really means.
Readers can understand more about a story and its characters if they look for clues in what the characters do and say.
Creating meaning that is not necessarily stated in the text.
To think beyond literal interpretation and find deeper meaning in the text.
Use the combination of background and stated information from the text to answer questions the reader may have.

INFERRINGCONNECTIONS + CLUES = INFERENCE
SCHEMA
+ =
TO INFER IS TO BUILD MEANING

INFERENCING VS.
PREDICTINGThe subtle differences
Predicting is a type of “forward inferring”, where as other inferring happens while looking back or at the present moment of reading.
Although they overlap, inferring is more difficult because you have to be more precise. Predicting is something you can check your accuracy further in the reading.

WHAT IS SUMMARIZING?
SUMMARIZING: TELLING WHAT’S IMPORTANT
It involves identifying key elements and condensing important information into your own words during and after reading.
Good readers pull together all they have read into an inclusive statement. Their comprehension is based on their ability to summarize the setting, characters, plot, theme, and point of view into even a SINGLE STATEMENT.
