Problems when reading scientific articles as linear text

• Difficult to analyze an understand • Difficult to memorize • Do not create a feeling of perspective • Do not create a feeling of structure • Do not show the relation between the parts • Cognitive disonance between the linear representation and

the mental processes of the brain when analyzing information

• Do not allow to have an overall picture • Do not allow to analyze the thought of the author when

she created the article • Loss of context in long articles

Possible Solutions

• Mind map as a complement to the text

• Mind map to view before reading the article

• Mind map to view instead of the article

This last option is possible and reasonable.

Who creates the mind map?

• Option 1. Each reader.

• Option 2. An expert reader of each team with experience in mind mapping.

• Option 3. An external expert.

• Option 4. The company that publishes the article.

In the future, it is probably the publishing companies that will create the mind maps attached to the articles.

Time Saving Estimation

• Analysis of a linear text article 3 hours

• Team of 6 people = 18 hours

• Mind map creation = 1 extra hour

• Analysis of the mind map = 1 hour

• Team of 6 people = 1*4 + 5*1 = 9 hours

• Savings = 18 – 9 = 9 hours (50%)

Results

• The mind mapping technique increases productivity between 25 and 50%.

• This is equivalent to hundreds or thousands of hours per year for each team using mind mapping.

• The investment is minimum and the implementation is fast (days)

• No other technique offers productivity increases at this level.
