Londinium

The Romans* came to England in AD 43*. They arrived in Kent, which is on

the south coast, and travelled in boats up the River Thames. The Romans

built a city on the River Thames. They called the city Londinium. The

Romans made buildings and streets, and after that, they built a bridge

over the Thames. (There is still a bridge there today.) Eighteen years

later, a local tribe* attacked the Romans. They destroyed Londinium and

killed all the people who were living there. The Romans built London

again, this time with more shops. They slowly built a wall around the city to defend it against more

attacks. The area inside the wall is now The City, where most of the big banks are. The Museum of

London is all about this great city. It’s the best place to learn about this important time in London’s

history.
