Who can borrow what and for how long?

Library Golden Rules (please read carefully!)

All members: once a year, members of College will be asked to return

all items they have on loan to the Library. Once checked in, they may

be borrowed again immediately. Failure to respond to the reminder

within 28 days renders the reader liable to fines.

All members: 28 days after an item has been issued, it may be recalled

by another reader. If the item is recalled, it will be due the next

working day after the request. Please respond promptly to recalls. Any

items not returned within 10 days of a recall will be retrieved by

Library staff from readers’ rooms, and an administration fee of £10 will

be charged to battels, regardless of outcome.

All members:

Books should not be taken out of Oxford.

Books should never be handed on to another reader, they must

be returned to us and issued to the new borrower. You remain

responsible for all items issued to you until they have been

checked in by Library staff.

The marking or defacing of items belonging to Nuffield College

Library is forbidden. Any infringement will be treated as a

disciplinary offence.

Food and drink should not be brought into the library. The only

exception is for securely bottled water.

No reader may engage in conduct that infringes the regulations

of the University in respect of the use of its materials or facilities,

including but not limited to the use of computers and network

resources.

Page 6: Reader's Guide - Nuffield

College leavers: you must account for all library items at the end of your final

term, when membership and loans expire. Items not accounted for upon

departure will be charged for. Charges consist of a £10 administration fee and

either:

a) replacement cost for books in print or immediately available second-

hand;

b) 10p per page for out of print books and £10 for binding.

Important: College members will not be presented for a degree if they have

not:

a) given a copy of their thesis, bound in hard covers, to the Library;

b) cleared their Library account, either by returning all books issued to

them, or paying for those they are unable to return.

How to...

...Find your way around

Our stock is arranged using the Library of Congress classification. There are

several signs around the library (at the staircases, Circulation and Enquiry

Desks, and in the lift) that will tell you where to find things.

A “q” at the beginning of an item’s classification denotes a large item -

“quarto”, whilst “p” means a small or boxed item - “pamphlet”. These items

are shelved in a separate sequence but can be found on the same floor as the

standard shelfmark (e.g. qJA is on 5th floor, as is JA).

Items prefixed with “Safe”, “Reserve”, “Special” or “MSS” are closed access:

please ask at the Enquiry Desk.

On page 12 of this booklet you will find a floorplan of the main library/tower.

There are printouts of the Library Extension floorplan in the Extension itself.

You will need your proximity key to get into the Extension (at the bottom of L

staircase). If you have trouble finding anything, please ask at the Enquiry Desk.

Page 7: Reader's Guide - Nuffield

...Search the catalogue http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk

SOLO can be used to search almost all of Oxford’s library collections, including

printed and electronic books and journals and many other items. To limit your

search to things held at Nuffield, select Nuffield College Library from the ‘All

libraries/collections’ drop-down menu on the right before searching. To look for

an item, enter your search terms in the box and click ‘Search’.

To find out where copies of the item are held, you can click on ‘Find and Request’.

To see if a particular library has a copy of the item, click on the + sign next to the

library’s name. The Type/Status column will show if an item is available, on loan

(if it is on loan, the date that it is due back will be displayed), or confined.

There are more detailed printed guides in the library, and online: http://

ox.libguides.com/SOLO. Library staff are always happy to help if you need

assistance!

...Borrow

During staff hours, bring your items to the Circulation Desk (ground floor) with

your university card and staff will issue them to you. Out of hours, there is a self

-issue system in operation. Self-issue is used at all times in the Library

Extension. For any items without a barcode, please fill in a loan slip, following

the instructions carefully. We rely on College members’ honesty and integrity in

recording any items that they remove from the library, and in respecting library

property.

Journals may only be borrowed by readers with a College room and must

remain within the College buildings at all times.

Reference books and theses may be borrowed for short periods, and only by

readers with a College room. These must remain within the College buildings at

all times.

Books from special collections may not be borrowed without the Librarian’s

permission.

A small collection of “Safe” items that are heavily used are kept in reserve and

must be asked for at the Enquiry Desk. They can be borrowed for one week.

Borrowing an excessive number of books or keeping loans for longer than they

are required can cause serious inconvenience to other readers, so please return

loans as soon as you have finished with them! You will always be asked at the

end of the academic year to return or renew all of your loans.

...Renew

Renewals, where permitted, can be done either online using SOLO, over the

phone, by email or in the library.

...Return

You will receive an automatic email reminder when your books are due back to

the library. Please respond to these promptly. Books should always be returned

to the Circulation Desk during opening hours. In an emergency, please use the

book drop facility at the Library entrance. If you are going to be absent from

College for extended periods, please return all loans or make arrangements for

Page 9: Reader's Guide - Nuffield

someone else in College to deal with recalls of your books on your behalf.

...Recall a book

Ask a member of staff! Because Nuffield College members have such long

borrowing periods it is not effective to put a hold on the item using SOLO, as it

will not be subject to a recall. It will simply be reserved for your use upon the

item’s return. To accelerate the return process you need to ask staff to recall

the book for you.

All College members are entitled to a 28 day minimum loan period. This means

that when you request a recall on the item and it has been on loan for more

than 28 days, it will be due back the next working day. However, if it has not yet

been out for 28 days, it will be due back the next working day after the 28th day

of its original loan period.

You will receive an automatic email alert when the book has been returned. It

will be placed on the Reserved Books shelf on the Ground Floor. Please

remember to have the book issued when you collect it!

...Reserve books for further use in the Library

If you want to keep books on your desk for later use, please fill in and leave a

yellow reservation slip inside the book with your name and the date. These can

be found on all floors of the Library. The books will be left on the desk for up to

one week. Please update the date if you wish the books to remain there.

Unreserved books will be reshelved on a daily basis. It is not possible to reserve

journals in this way.

...Use other libraries

College members are entitled to use any of the Bodleian Libraries.

A reciprocal arrangement exists for College members to register at St

Antony’s

College Library and to borrow.

College members may also use the Institute of Actuaries Library in

Worcester Street.

Page 10: Reader's Guide - Nuffield

...Request a new book for purchase

If there is a book that you would like to suggest for purchase, please complete

the book request form on the Library website, making sure you are signed into

the College Intranet.

...Keep up to date with new books

We list our new books on a weekly basis on: our website, Facebook, Library

Thing and via an RSS feed. You can also receive email notifications—please email

us or let us know if you would like to be signed up to this service.

Book jackets of new books and recent titles by Nuffield College members are

displayed on the first floor landing, and the books are kept separately on a shelf

in the Current Affairs room. These books can be borrowed as normal.

...Request an inter-library loan

If you need an item that cannot be found in any of the Oxford libraries, we can

usually arrange an inter-library loan for you. Please fill in the inter-library loan

request form on our website with as many details as possible. You will need to

be signed into the College Intranet to do this.

About our collections

Aside from its stock in the main library, we have a large collection of

government and official publications that are kept in the Library Extension at

the bottom of L staircase. There are plans in the Extension showing the layout of

the shelves.

We stock a number of books on the core reading lists of Master’s courses in the

social sciences. This Taught Course Collection is confined to the library (i.e. may

not be borrowed) to ensure that the books are always available for Master’s

students from all Oxford colleges. It can be found in the small reading room at

the end of the long corridor on the first floor. The books have a subject

shelfmark (e.g. POL for politics). Full details of the collection can be seen on our

website.

Page 11: Reader's Guide - Nuffield

Our Oxford Collection, a selection of fiction, non-fiction, and DVDs relating to

Oxford, is available for borrowing. It is housed in the Current Affairs room on

the first floor. You will also find a wide selection of books featuring artists

from the College’s Art Collection. These may be perused in the library, but not

borrowed.

There is a reference section in the First Floor Reading Room, including

dictionaries, directories, encyclopaedias, reference works, and bibliographies.

Many reference works are available via OxLIP+. Please ask us if you would like

to know how to search these databases.

The JCR DVD Collection is available to College members, and can be found in

the Extension. Please write your details and the DVD title in the register

before taking anything out. Donations are gladly accepted.

We also operate a Book Exchange, of mostly fictionfound on the ground floor

of the library - this is a collection of mostly fiction. We ask either that you

borrow and return the books, exchange one of your own for the book you

take, or put a donation in the moneybox for Oxfam. Donations of books are

also welcome.

Services

Our website www.nuffield.ox.ac.uk/library contains information about all

the services we offer as well as details of our collections, including regular

updates about new books.

You will also find links to our pages on Facebook, Twitter, Delicious, Library

Thing and our Wordpress blog. There are many ways to keep up with what

we’re doing!

There are several computer workstations in the reading rooms, which can be

used to search SOLO and access the Internet. You can also print from these

workstations; this costs 5p per printed side, and printouts should be collected

and paid for at the Circulation Desk.
