No sooner is it done than we are back, again on a Wednesday but St George‘s Day, and Shakespeare‘s 450 th birthday (allegedly...). A late Easter means a long Spring Term and in the packed pages ahead you will see details of a huge amount of activity which has been going on, and no small amount of success. Well done to all for keeping this going over the course of a big half term, and for the many fine performances in sport, music, and drama, debating and writing, Young Enterprise and lots more. All of which means that we are probably sending the Trinity Leisure Centre details out to your separately with this Newsletter, rather than as part of it but I hope that you do have a chance to see what is on offer here and to consider taking part if you do not do so already. This term we say farewell to Mrs Brenda Graham, who has served the school so well for many years as the technician in our Art department. She said to the staff in her leaving speech that it has been her ideal job, and we have certainly seen that in the joy she has brought to her work, and her sustained helpfulness and creativity in the role. Parents and carers are most likely to have met Brenda at the Art exhibitions each year, when she would have been helping the students throughout the day to present their work. We shall miss her greatly and thank her for all of her service to the school, wishing her well for a long and healthy and happy retirement. Thanks to all of you for your support over the past term. There have been many parents‘ evenings, tutor evenings, open evenings for the Sixth Form Centre, concerts and performances, trips to Manchester and Switzerland, and soon to The Netherlands and Ski-ing, and we have been fund- raising for Uganda, making cakes (not necessarily all the students‘ own work...), matches and practices ... and it has been very good to have your company and support in these important things in the life of the school. A late Easter means the sudden arrival of exams as soon as we return. Best wishes for all of our students who are preparing for them over the holiday make sure you get some good rest and refreshment as well. Well done to Year 9 students for the way in which they approached the exams running up to the end of this term. All good wishes now for Year 11 and Year 13 students in particular as their written papers start, and to Year 10 and to Year 12, who have fewer papers but still the same pressures. We hope that they manage those well indeed and enjoy good papers and good success in due course. And now for Easter the most important and exciting weekend in the history of the world! I hope that you are able to get some good rest and holiday over the days ahead, and best wishes to everyone for a Happy Easter. Yours sincerely Headteacher

NEWSLETTER TO PARENTS and CARERS April 2014

HEADTEACHER’S LETTER

Dear Parents and Carers Easter as a movable feast in the church‘s calendar has produced a peculiar holiday this year – here we are breaking up on a Wednesday, with the actual Easter weekend not quite in sight yet. No sooner is it done than we are back, again on a Wednesday – but St George‘s Day, and Shakespeare‘s 450

th

birthday (allegedly...). A late Easter means a long Spring Term and in the packed pages ahead you will see details of a huge amount of activity which has been going on, and no small amount of success. Well done to all for keeping this going over the course of a big half term, and for the many fine performances in sport, music, and drama, debating and writing, Young Enterprise – and lots more. All of which means that we are probably sending the Trinity Leisure Centre details out to your separately with this Newsletter, rather than as part of it – but I hope that you do have a chance to see what is on offer here and to consider taking part if you do not do so already. Thought for the Day We have drawn this term to a close by considering the Easter story and its meaning. Easter is the most important festival in the Christian calendar. It celebrates the resurrection from the dead of Jesus, three days after he was executed. The Easter story is at the heart of Christianity. Next half term we are unfortunately only able to have one week of assemblies due to exams. This does however, provide more time in forms for topics to be discussed in more depth and with more creativity. On April 23rd we celebrate St. George‘s day and take the opportunity to consider Britain as a ‗Christian country‘. Following on from this we will examine Christianity in other cultures around the world and how it looks different from our own experiences of Christianity. We are also lucky enough to be welcoming a team, with several young people, from the Diocese of Northern Argentina into Trinity on the week beginning the 19th May. The team are involved in urban mission work in Argentina and will be talking to our pupils about the work they do as Christians to help other people. The themes for our Thought for the day for the coming half term are as follows:

Week 1

w/c Monday 21st April Christianity in Britain.

Week 2

w/c Monday 28th April Christianity across the world.

Week 3

w/c Monday 5th May 50 Things of Wonder.

Week 4

w/c Monday 12th May 50 Things of Wonder.

Week 5

w/c Monday 19th May Christianity in the world.

Hope Carlisle On Tuesday 8th April, we welcomed church leaders from around the city for their planning meeting for the Bank Holiday weekend activities in the six areas of the city. It was very good to have them in school, and to be part of the plans for the exciting weekend of events planned for the start of May. You can catch up with further details on the website: www.hopecarlisle.org/news Memorial Football Match On Wednesday 9th April at 3.00pm at the Sheepmount, Trinity hosted an annual memorial football match.. The Memorial match is in memory of David Murray, a student of our school and Nathan Cuthbertson, a student of St Aidan‘s School, in Sunderland, who died in Afghanistan.

INFORMATION School Attendance Students continue to ‗smash‘ our attendance records. Last year, attendance to the end of March stood at 93.4%. This year, it stands at 95.5%. We are really pleased and thank parents and carers for their support in encouraging good habits of attendance.

Instrumental/Singing Tuition Fees 2013/14 A reminder to parents/carers who are not paying by monthly standing order payments: the third

instalment is due to reach us by 29th June 2014. Please note that if payments are not up to date

unfortunately students may not be allowed to continue with lessons. Payment can be made by standing order, credit/debit card either with ParentPay or by phoning the Finance Office. Payments by cash and cheque are still acceptable, cheques should be made payable to ―Trinity School‖. If you have a query or you require further information please contact the Finance Office on 01228 516051 ext 215. Mrs A Larking, Finance Manager Payment for School Meals Please ensure you give your children the correct change for topping up their school meals account at the revaluers as change is not given. Parents/carers are reminded that topping up can also be done via parent pay with a credit or debit card. Mrs A Larking, Finance Manager Parking While we understand that parking in Strand Road is limited, there are a number of Trinity students with mobility problems whose parents/carers need to have access to the Blue Badge parking area. We are asking for parents and carers not to use the car park when dropping off or collecting students. Please also avoid the double yellow lines and the designated school entrance areas on Strand Road. Rather, we ask parents/carers to pick up your children a little away from the school site, perhaps towards the Newman School end of Strand Road, or in one of the approach roads leading off Victoria Place. For those travelling west or north, a pick up point near Wickes or DFS could avoid the congestion in Georgian Way/Victoria Place. We would greatly appreciate your co-operation with this request. Thank you.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS Year 12 Geography Residential – Co. Antrim Twelve Year 12 Geography students will be travelling to Northern Ireland on 9

th April. They will spend

4/5 days based at Whitepark Bay on the stunning North Antrim coast near to Bushmills, home of the famous Irish whiskey for over 500 years. The students will spend their revision days exploring the coastline and the city of Belfast, including visits to the Titanic Museum and Queen‘s University. They will be looking in particular at rural rebranding and work being done to bring investment into rural areas. Trip to Passo Tonale On Friday, 11

th April, 49 Trinity students and 6 staff will travel to Passo Tonale in the Italian Alps for a

week‘s skiing and snowboarding. We wish them bon voyage and look forward to hearing about their adventures on their return. Uganda Project We would like to thank everyone for all the support they have given us with this project. As the date for our departure gets nearer we are continuing our fundraising so that we are able to donate as much as possible to our partner schools in Uganda. The next event is our Quiz Night on Saturday 26 April at Scotby Village Hall from 7.30pm. – there are still tickets left for this event at £5.50 to include the quiz, food and an Auction of Promises. th March. Thank you to the parents and carers

who attended and took the opportunity to discuss their child‘s progress in their second term at Trinity. Year 11 Tutor Evening A Year 11 Tutor Evening was held on Monday, 24

th March. This provided an opportunity for parents

and carers to discuss their child‘s progress with their form tutors in the run up to GCSE exams. Thank you to all parents and carers who attended. Rydal Mount Wordsworth Prize The descendants of William Wordsworth have set up an annual poetry prize open to all students at Cumbrian schools. The theme for this year‘s entries was ‗Flowers‘ or ‗Trees‘. The poems have now been judged by the Wordsworth family and an award ceremony will be held at Rydal Mount, near Ambleside, on 10

th April. We have been notified that 14 Trinity students have had their poems

shortlisted and have consequently been invited to the awards ceremony accompanied by two family guests. The students, all from Year 10, are: Heidi Ostell, Lydia Graham, Georgina Proudfoot, Sam Ling, Leah Waughman, Chris Lucas, Sophie Wardle, Jake Mansfield, Brenna Boyle, Ellie Parsons, Rhianna Johnston, Elizabeth Emerson, Lucy Jackson and Beth Murdoch. A trophy, to be held for one year, will be awarded, along with a cash prize of £50. There will also be signed book prizes for two runners-up. We will report further after the award ceremony. Theatre Trip On Wednesday, 26

th March a party of 15 students plus staff travelled to the Theatre by the Lake in

Keswick to see the play ―Not about Heroes‖ by Stephen MacDonald. Set in World War I, this powerful and moving play is narrated by Siegfried Sassoon as he describes retrospectively his meeting in 1917 with fellow poet Wilfred Owen at the Craiglockhart Hospital in Scotland. The course of their friendship is shown through extracts from the real diaries and letters of the two men, right up to their last meeting. Tragically Wilfred Owen died in the final week of the War, a few months after receiving the Military Cross for bravery. This being the centenary year of the outbreak of the war made the production even more poignant. Year 10 Freeze Day On Friday, 28

th March, all students in Year 10 were off timetable for two or three periods to learn

about revision strategies. Learning Performance staff were in school to work with them on a variety of revision skills such as mind mapping. We have used the presenters in school before and feedback from students was very positive.

Year 10 History Talk On Monday 17

th March, Stuart Eastwood from the Border Regiment museum at Carlisle Castle gave

Year 10 history students an in-depth presentation on the World Wars, with a particular focus on World War One. During the presentation students were able to look at a variety of different artefacts such as a soldier‘s uniform, a rifle, hand grenades, a gas mask, a wash kit, and tinned provisions. After the presentation students were then given the opportunity to handle the artefacts and some students even tried the items on. Mr Eastwood also described common battlefield casualties and wounds caused by shells and machine guns. He also highlighted the horrific effects of gas attacks and shell shock. Particularly useful to students was his description of how casualties would be dealt with and what medical improvements were made during World War One and World War Two; James Atkinson said ―it gave us a great insight into the World Wars‖. It was especially interesting for students to find out more about Cumbria‘s connection to the war effort with biscuits from here being sent to the front line. Luke Suniga commented ―it was great to find out how Cumbria contributed to the war‖. Students were also shown pictures from the trenches and the horrible medical problems that resulted from the poor sanitation and injuries. Josh Smith said ―I found the talk really interesting. My favourite part was on the trenches. You saw the great lengths men would go to in order to protect their country.‖ Overall, the talk provided the students with new information and expanded their knowledge on the Great War. Thanks to Mr Eastwood! Report written by- Stephanie Birrell, Caitlin Humes and Ellie Parsons. Physics Master Class On Tuesday, 1

st April we were delighted to welcome Dr. Stacey Habergham into school to deliver a

lecture entitled ―Exploring the Universe with Exploding Stars‖. As well as our own Trinity Year 12 Physics cohort, we were joined by students from William Howard, Caldew, Nelson Thomlinson, Appleby, QEGS, Ullswater and Netherhall Schools. Following the fascinating lecture, students were able to join in various hands on activities with spectra demonstrations. Trinity School is exceedingly fortunate to be part of the Ogden Trust, Cumbrian School Consortium, a consortium that is no longer accepting any more schools into the Trust. The Trust is responsible for promoting high level, university directed, specialist Physics education free of charge to all partnership schools. Year 7 Accelerated Reading update Congratulations to Patrica Schwarz (7FDG), Chloe Whiffen (7ILI), Daniel Thomas (7KRI) and Aaron Cleasby (7KHU) who all joined the 100% club by achieving 6 or more 100% in book quizzes. All Year 7 have had reading lessons in the library this term and have been able to choose from our range of book titles. However some students may want to read their own books and they can check to see if the book is in the scheme by going to www.arbookfind.co.uk. This site allows you to sort books by different subjects and by reading level and can be really useful in helping you and your child choose appropriate books. If you want to see which Accelerated Reading books we have in the library, simply enter the keycode: IU633763 and click go. World Book Day Bookmark Competition Congratulations to: Annika Browa (7JPE), Patricia Schwarz (7FDG) and Hannah Wharton (7SLA) who are Trinity School‘s WBD ―Design a Bookmark‖ competition winners. Thank you to everyone who entered — there really are some fantastic designs and judging was very difficult for the librarians! All the entries have now been submitted into the national competition – Good luck to all! Mrs Barry, Mrs Spencer and Miss Allen Rotary Club Photography Competition In a recent Rotary club competition three of our students did very well. Ben Woodbridge was placed 2

nd in the Senior category and Katie Taylor was placed 1

st in the Intermediate and Nichole Swatts

placed 2nd

which is fantastic. Well done. Our congratulations go to them. A good entry was received from Trinity school this year and the Rotary club hope we will enter again next year. Some comments from the judges: Katie Taylor Intermediate First prize Three very good photographs, well composed with a nice gradation of tone, especially in the two mono (black and white) photographs. The inspiration of a special family moment was very well illustrated by a family baptism. The judges were pleased to award these photographs first prize in the intermediate section. Nichole Swatts Intermediate Second prize. Inspired by the 1950’s and the finding of an old polaroid camera, Nicole has produced three good photos. The judges thought that the photo of the family sitting in a restaurant booth reflected the theme best of all and were pleased to award these photographs second place, intermediate section. Ben Woodbridge Senior Second prize Ben has produced three delightful portraits of Will looking very thoughtful. They are all sharp and properly focussed, with a good and gentle range of tones. The monochrome portrait is of a very high quality and the three photos together are worthy of the second prize.

HOUSE NEWS Amazon House Well done to all Amazon House students for all their efforts in school. Though this has been a relatively short term, it has been challenging at times. We have had another big success with Cumbria ACF. Cadet LCpl Toni Coupland in 10DWB has been awarded First Aider of the Year award for her positive actions with a student in difficulties. Well done Toni, we are really proud of you! We are also really grateful to our Year 11 House Captains – James Lythgoe, Rosie Watt and deputies – Robbie Graham, Jess Eland, Laura Carr and Tom Harker who have helped in many ways in the House, been mentors to younger students, represented Amazon at School Council and senior students meetings etc. etc. We wish them and all of the Year 11 well in their exams and in their revision work that is currently underway we hope! We are sure that they will get the success they all deserve and that this will help them onto further studies and training. We will be introducing our next House Captains in the next newsletter and letting you know more about them and our plans for moving Amazon House onwards and upwards. Nile House Students in Nile House continue to support a number of charities. A charity quiz, delivery of Valentines cards and a cake sale raised over £70 to support our link school in Tanzania. Numerous students ran the Sport Relief Mile, many of them in fancy dress and all forms have being buying raffle tickets in support of the Uganda project. Each form has sent a card and the good wishes to Mrs Wylie, Nile House Tutor who is currently absent from school. We all wish her a very speedy recovery. Congratulations to all our students who received certificates in the recent PE assemblies, in recognition of their commitment to a wide variety of school sporting activities. We would also like to congratulate all the students in Years 7, 8 and 9 who took part in the inter form sports tournament. Best wishes for a relaxing Easter break. Everest house Everest house students have had yet another busy month! We have had our fair share of sporting success with out-of-school clubs and activities: Matthew Douglas was again called up to play for Carlisle United youth team and has been selected to join the club as an apprentice so we wish Matthew every success for the future and look forward to hearing about his achievements for many years to come. Further equestrian success came from Emma Gorman who was part of the winning show jumping team. Although Easter is almost upon us, we look forward to the Summer term and, in particular, Everest week. Students have become involved in a variety of ways with Thomas Johnston and Oliver Bulman researching a range of charities for us to become involved in – sponsoring a Yak is currently a favourite. A very special mention must also go to Mr Martin who has made a scale replica of Mount Everest, ready for our form flags to be displayed upon; the race to the summit is about to begin! A final word about our Everest Stars of the Week; this has been another wonderful month with lots of acts of kindness, success and good deeds done and our celebratory party will be taking place when we return to school at the end of this month. Look out for news on who is Star of the Term in the next newsletter. Kilimanjaro House Kilimanjaro House is delighted that Callie Graham of 8ARI took part in some show jumping and was in the winning team. Iona Reily, Rachael Crampsey, Elise Walkinshaw, Iona Cunningham, Jasemin Metherall and Caitlyn Field were all part of various ensembles that did extremely well at the Carlisle Music Festival, well done girls. Thanks to 10LHO for all their hard work on the Sport Relief Mile, a great time was had by all and all for a superb cause. 10LHO also put on their pinnies last week and raised £31.30 for Macmillan Nurses by baking and selling cakes. Everyone worked really hard and kept the kitchen clean and tidy as they baked. Special thanks go to Alex, Lara and Talia for bringing in extra supplies and to Katrina for all the publicity. Thanks also to Ben, Sam, Kyle, Alex, Katrina and Megan for doing all the selling at lunchtime and a special thank you to Miss Bowes for all her hard work on the day and for all the shopping. Well done to Georgina Slater and Nadia Perez Bar of 7FDG for their contribution to the hockey team, they have secured a place on the semi finals. Mrs Moody is now up to 20 miles in training for the Edinburgh Marathon which she will be completing at the end of May, she is raising money for Macmillan Cancer support. Her running bud Mrs McArdle will also be running in aid of the Children‘s Heart Unit at the Freeman hospital in Newcastle. Mrs Moody would like to thank all students for their hard work this long half term and wishes everyone a happy Easter break, don‘t eat too much chocolate!!

SIXTH FORM NEWS Lancashire Law School University Experience Day On Wednesday 19 March ten Year 12 Law students spent the day at a Law School Experience Day at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston. The day included sessions on practical and theoretical law skills, a campus tour and a student life talk. Students attended a criminal law activity which they found particularly useful as it included content they had learned in their AS course. The day gave students a real insight into what it would be like to study law at university and they were able to find out about the variety of different law courses on offer. Students commented on the vibrant atmosphere at the university and were impressed with the facilities they saw. They appreciated the assistance they had during the day from friendly and helpful Student Ambassadors who were on hand to answer any questions they had. Futures Ready On 7 April Year 12 students and eight staff travelled to Lancaster University for the Futures Ready event. Students were welcomed by staff from the UK Student Recruitment and Outreach Department and introduced to student ‗buddies‘ who were on hand throughout the day to offer guidance and answer questions. The day began with a tour of the facilities including a look at student accommodation, the Learning Zone, library and lecture rooms. Students were then able to experience a lecture for themselves (delivered by current third year students reading Art, History, Biomedicine, Business Studies and Criminology) or attend a session on Presentation Skills. This was followed up by a practical afternoon session building on the morning‘s lecture content. Current students shared their reasons for selecting their chosen subjects and spoke about their career aspirations after graduation. Later in the day Leanne Bates from the UK Student Recruitment and Outreach Department presented a well illustrated talk to the whole group entitled ‗Choosing University Courses and Places‘. Students were strongly advised to do plenty of research into entry requirements and to look at all the options open to them when selecting a university. At the same time students were reminded that for many employers having a good degree from a good university is what matters, not the subject. Leanne did a mini quiz with the correct answers of James May (Lancaster University music graduate) and Sacha Baron Cohen (Cambridge University economics graduate) illustrating her point perfectly! In preparation for university applications Year 12 were encouraged to start jotting down ideas in preparation for writing a persuasive personal statement. For those students considering an alternative to university there was an opportunity to learn more about apprenticeships and courses on offer at Carlisle College. The day was rounded off with a talk by Ben Ho, current third year English Literature student who spoke enthusiastically and in detail about his time at university and the opportunities it had presented to him. For many students this was the first time they had visited a university and the day was a valuable and enlightening experience in preparation for important decisions to be made over the coming months. Young Enterprise – North Cumbria Area Finals Congratulations to Trinity‘s Young Enterprise Company (Diverse) for receiving the ‗Profitability‘ Award at the North Cumbria Area Finals on Wednesday 2

nd April. This was the culmination of lots of hard

work in their own time since September last year. At the finals the students had to do a formal business presentation to an audience of approx 200 people including local business people and the Mayor of Carlisle. They had to provide information about their products, their work as a team and any problems they had and how they overcame them. Well done! Mr Winter Sixth Form Debating Success We were very pleased indeed when our Sixth Form debating team were awarded runners up in the Regional Final of the Debating Matters Competition, held at Newcastle University on Tuesday this week. It was a tough challenge and our team of Yr 12 students, Hannah Hayes, Chloe Patterson, Philippa Harmison, Katie Richardson and Emma Walker worked hard on the research beforehand and on the competition days too. The complex themes covered in the final were ‗commercial surrogacy in poorer countries is exploitative‘, ‗attempts to radically extend the human lifespan should be welcomed and not feared‘ and ‗unpaid internships are exploitative‘. During the debates our students were composed and articulate. They delivered clear, well considered and coherent arguments in formal speeches to the judges who were made up of university

8

professors in the fields of science, humanities and the arts, also business leaders from the north east. After their speeches the students displayed lots of quick thinking in the Q & A sessions with judges, the audience and opposing teams. We won both debates in the first round but were pipped at the post in the final by the team from St Bede‘s Catholic School & Sixth Form College in Durham. Our prizes are a tour of the BBC studios in Newcastle for the team, and the school has been given a free subscription to Hodder Education‘s on-line Dynamic Education package, worth several thousand pounds. Many thanks go to the organisers and sponsors of the competition, (The Wellcome Trust, Hodder Education, Statoil and the Institute of Ideas), also to the staff, Mr Winter, Miss Ashton and Ms Hopley, who gave time to support and tutor the Trinity team along the way. Also thanks to Mrs Ogilvie who kindly chauffeured us there and back safely in the school minibus. We weren‘t quite outright winners this year, but watch out for next year, we‘ll be back!

After an even opening 15 minutes, Trinity gradually took control of the game and scored with a shot from the edge of the penalty area by Kieran Fitton. Further pressure resulted in a number of corners and from one of these a powerful header by Matthew Douglas gave Trinity a two goal lead at half time. Early in the second half another corner fell to Matthew Douglas who struck it first time into the bottom corner. A break by Ulverston resulted in a penalty being awarded which was converted to make the score 3-1. The final 20 minutes were evenly contested but Trinity finished the game deserved winners. A special mention goes to Harry Powell who was faultless in his role of assistant referee. Our thanks to the travelling parents who helped to make it a very enjoyable and rewarding weekend. We would also like to express our sincere thanks to Cumbria Rugby Union for their financial support towards the trip. Year 7 Inter-form Cricket Competition Over the past seven Tuesday lunchtimes the Year 7 students have been playing an indoor 6 a-side pairs Cricket competition in the Arena. Round 1 Winners Semi-Finals Winners Final Winners FDG v ILI FDG FDG v KRI FDG FDG v HLI FDG JPE v KRI KRI KHU v JWL JWL JWL v HLI HLI HLI v SLA HLI Thank you to Steven Barker (Sixth Form) Nathan McStay, Grant Taylor, Rudi Todd (Year 10), Harvey Tiffen and Jacob McAlindon (Year 9) who umpired the games. A big thank you also goes to Jonathon Osborne, the Chance to Shine Development Officer, who has worked with the Umpires and Year 7 students to organise the whole competition. Teams have been made up of girls and boys from each form, with the standard improving in each round. It has also been good to see the ever increasing crowd enjoying the Cricket and adding to the atmosphere of the occasion.

Under 12 The Trinity girls won their group against Cockermouth, St Bees and Nelson Thomlinson to progress to the semi final against Keswick. This match went to extra time but the score was still 0-0. A 1v1 against the goalkeeper decided the game with Ellie Garbutt in goal saving every shot from the Keswick players resulting in a win for Trinity. In the final against Austin Friars - Ellie Barbour and Hannah Wharton scored for Trinity to make it a 2-0 win. Hockey 30 girls travelled to Penrith to play QEGS and for once the sun was shining! However on arrival at Penrith Leisure Centre, we discovered that QEGS and Ullswater School had double booked the pitch. As a result, instead of 11 a side games we had to play 7 a side. The Trinity girls, as ever, were very understanding with no complaints about the reduced time they had to play. Trinity dominated play in the Y9 games with many shots on goal, but QEGS‘ goalkeeper was outstanding and saved over 10 shots. A 0-0 score line did not really reflect the game. The Y8 game was much closer with end to end action and a number of goals being scored by each team. Caitlin Reeves-Brown, making her debut in goal, was excellent. Well done to all the girls.
