INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE PHENOMENA OF URBAN DENSITY & INTIMACY

COURSE OVERVIEW & STRUCTURE
STRIPTEASE HOUSING
The 2009-2010 academic year is divided into two semesters each of 14 weeks duration. The overall programme for this will be as follows for the twin ateliers Bakker & Blanc:
Autumn semester, Bachelor semester 3
14.09.09-16.12.09
- Warm-up Exercise: How to extend a Hairdryer (wks 1-3)
- Project 1: Junge komm bald wieder (wks 4-14)
- Excursion to Zrich (wk 4)
Spring semester, Bachelor semester 4
22.02.10-04.06.10
- Project 2: A Hard Days Night (wks 1-14)
- Excursion to London (t.b.a.)
Structure of the twin ateliers:
The twin ateliers Bakker & Blanc will function asone unit in terms of the content of the course; i.e. all theory components, externalinputs, critics, excursions, etc.
However, each professor will be responsible for their own atelier on an individual level, a more intimate group of students whose
work they will follow in detail for the duration of the semesters; i.e. 1 on 1 contacts, table critics, group discussions, etc.
This structure gives the students the best of both worlds. As a group they will experience how putting-their-heads-together is thedriving force behind the design methodology of Bakker & Blanc, whilst building up a close rapport with one specic professor on anindividual level to maintain a continuity in the projects.

HOW TO EXTEND A HAIR-DRYER

Junge, komm bald wieder
Freddy Quinn
Im ersten Brief stand: Komm doch bald wieder her!
Junge, komm bald wieder, bald wieder nach Haus.Junge, fahr nie wieder, nie wieder hinaus.Ich mach mir Sorgen, Sorgen um Dich.Denk auch an morgen, denk auch an mich.Junge, komm bald wieder, bald wieder nach Haus.

A Hard Days Night
John Lennon / Paul McCartney; The Beatles
Its been a hard days night,
And Ive been working like a dog,Its been a hard days night,
I should be sleeping like a log,
But when I get home to you,
I nd the things that you do,Will make me feel alright. You know I work all day,
To get you money to buy you things,
And its worth it just t o hear you say,
Youre gonna give me evrything,
So why on earth should I moan,
Cos when I get you alone,
You know I feel okay.
When Im home evrything seems to be right,When Im home feeling you holding me
Tight, tight, yeh.
Its been a hard days night,
And Ive been working like a dog,
Its been a hard days night,
I should be sleeping like a log,
But when I get home to you,
I nd the things that you do,Will make me feel alright,
So why on earth should I moan,
Cos when I get you alone,
You know I feel okay.
When Im home evrything seems to be right,When Im home feeling you holding me
Tight, tight, yeh.Its been a hard days night,
And Ive been working like a dog,

Priodisation

c. 1980 -
Heerenveen, Holland.
For more than thirty years, Louis Le Roy has been working on an enormous structure in a meadow at the Friesian settlement of
Mildam in the Netherlands. There, on a two-hectare site, he piles up with his bare hands paving bricks, paving stones, kerbstones and
other discarded street rubble while allowing nature to proceed about him unhindered. Le Roy calls this fascinating jungle populated
by large stacked edices an Eco-Cathedral.
The ideas underpinning Le Roys project are the importance of the time factor in spatial processes, and working with complex, dyna-
mic systems and networks. Inspired by the Nobel Prize-winner Ilya Prigogine, Le Roy pondered the following question: What can
one person achieve working with nature in space and time? Le Roys position on these concepts is at odds with the often rapid, super-
efcient, function-hugging approach to greenspace and nature in the Netherlands. The Eco-Cathedral is a place where time regains
space and space regains time. Le Roy expects it to be continued by others at least until the year 3000.
To ensure the continuation of LeRoys philosophy for future generations, the Time Foundation was established to promote insight
and knowledge of the notion of time as a condition for the creative development of cooperation between natural and creative human
processes in space and time. Meanwhile, LeRoys work in Mildam carries on and is open to the public.
(Text from www.slowlab.net)
The methods of todays planners will not prepare them for the enormous problems that they will have to face in the next century. One
of the rst things they have to do is accept innite time within their thinking system. (Louis Le Roy)

Bricklaying
The wall elements were manufactured as a pilot project in our research facilities at the ETH Zurich, transported by lorry to the
construction site, and installed using a crane. Because construction was already quite advanced, we had only three months before
assembly on site. This made manufacturing the 72 faade elements a challenge both technologically and in terms of deadlines. As the
robot could be driven directly by the design data, without our having to produce additional implementation drawings, we were able
to work on the design of the faade up to the very last minute before starting production.
To accelerate the manufacturing process for the 400 square metre faade, we had to develop an automated process for applying the
two-component bonding agent. Because each brick has a different rotation, every si ngle brick has a different and unique overlap wit h
the brick below it, and the one below that. Together with the brick manufacturers engineer, we established a method in which four
parallel bonding agent paths are applied, for each brick individually, at pre-dened intervals to the central axis of the wall element.
Load tests performed on the rst elements manufactured revealed that the bonding agent was so structurally effective that the reinfor-
cements normally required for conventional prefabricated walls were unnecessary. (Text from www.gramaziokohler.com).

El Anatsui
Artist.
Ghana/Nigeria.
www.elanatsui.com
Art grows out of each particular situation, and I believe that artists are better off working with whatever their environment throws
up. (El Anatsui, 2003).
Throughout his career Ghanaian artist El Anatsui has experimented with a variety of media, including wood, ceramics and paint.
Most recently, he has focused on discarded metal objects, hundreds or even thousands of which are joined together to create truly re-
markable works of art. Anatsui indicates that the word gawu (derived from Ewe, his nati ve language) has several potential meanings,
including metal and a fashioned cloak. The term, therefore, manages to encapsulate the medium, process and format of the works
on view, reecting the artists transformation of discarded materials into objects of striking beauty and originality.
The metal fragments that constitute the raw material of Anatsuis work have had a profound impact on the West African societies that
use, reuse and nally discard them. Several of his metal cloths are constructed with aluminum wrappings from the tops of bottles
that once contained spirits from local disti lleries. The three-dimensional sculptures are made of the discarded tops of evaporated milk
tins, rusty metal graters and old printing plates, all gathered in and around Nsukka, Nigeria, where the artist has lived and worked for
the last 28 years.
Drawing on the aesthetic traditions of his native Ghana and adopted Nigeria, as well as contemporary Western forms of expression,
Anatsuis works engage the cultural, social and economic histories of West Africa. Through their associations, his humble metal frag-
ments provide a commentary on globalization, consumerism, waste and the transience of peoples lives in West Africa and beyond.
Their re-creation as powerful and transcendent works of art--many of which recall traditional practices and art forms--suggests as well
the power of human agency to alter such harmful patterns. (Text from http://africa.si.edu/exhibits/gawu/about.html).

Architektur Biennale in Venedig.

Over the past month Folke Kbberling and Martin Kaltwasser have been building a giant amphitheatre out of junk. With the aid of
volunteers and intrigued onlookers, the German duo have almost nished and the result is worth a visit. As a study in patchwork
construction, it is a magical space of chambers fabricated by borrowers, and has a g lory unmatched by any corporate ofce block. It
helps that Kaltwasser is an architect, so the building is structurally sound and user-friendly. The two have been collaborating since
1998, creating amorphous forms out of trash that retain a childlike simplicity in spite of rigorous engineering.

Constitution AVL-Ville
Introduction
In a constantly developing society, the artist plays an important stimulating role. Development implies breaking away from existingstructures. To reach optimal artistic expression, it is crucial for the artist to be able to deploy himself or herself without being subjectto the restrictions of civil morality. The objective of AVL-Ville is to create an environment where this is possible. To reach this goal, the rights formulated below are to be seen as absolute, without any exceptions. Living at AVL-Ville can be experienced as a hard andconfrontational artistic life. However, this is the ultimate consequence of an honest and uncompromising existence.
Text of the Constitution
1) Everyone has the right to freedom of artistic expression and design.2) Everyone has the right to freedom of expression, which is to say revealing and receiving thoughts or feelings other than

1995-
Keilestraat 43e, Rotterdam, Holland.
www.ateliervanlieshout.com
Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL), founded by artist Joep van Lieshout (1963) in 1995, is a multidisciplinary art practice encompassing
installation, design, furniture and architecture. The name Atelier Van Lieshout emphasises the fact that the works of art do not stemsolely from the creative brain of Joep van Lieshout, but are produced by a creative team of artists, designers and architects. The works of art are practical, uncomplicated and substantial. The work varies from sculptures and furniture, bathrooms and mobilehome units to large installations and complete architectural refurbishments. One of the many applications and techniques used by AVLare the large polyester constructions in striking, bright colours. These polyester constructions, of which the large mobile home unitsare the best known, form the AVL trademark. Recurring themes in the work of AVL are autarky, power, politics and sex.(Text from www.ateliervanlieshout.com).

Christiania
1971-
Copenhagen, Denmark.
www.christiania.org
Christiania: Free Town, or The Forb idden City of the Military was declared open in 1971 by Jacob Ludvigsen.
Christiania is the land of the settlers. It is the so far biggest opportunity to build up a society from scratch - while nevertheless stillincorporating the remaining constructions. Own electricity plant, a bath-house, a giant athletics building, where all the seekers ofpeace could have their grand meditation - and yoga center. Halls where theater groups can feel at home. Buildings for the stoners whoare too paranoid and weak to participate in the race...Yes for those who feel the beating of the pioneer heart there can be no doubt asto the purpose of Christiania. It s the part of the city which has been kept secret to us - but no more. (Jacob Ludvigsen).(Text from Wikipedia).

Zaffaraya
1985-
Bern, Switzerland.
www.zaffaraya.ch
(Text from Wikipedia).
