The Australian Turf Club (ATC) yesterday announced it had narrowed the field down to five horses for who could potentially run

under its banner in the inaugural $10,000,000 The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on 14 October.

The news came as slot holders and the owners of some of Australia’s leading sprinting prospects attempt to navigate their way into the world’s richest turf race in six weeks’ time.

The ATC had called for expressions of interest earlier this year from owners with horses who could potentially run in The Everest, with the club yesterday slashing the list from 24 to five contenders.

Group One winners Global Glamour (Star Witness) and Redzel (Snitzel) made the cut, as did Japanese import Brave Smash (Tosen Phantom), who was runner-up at Caulfield last month at his first Australian start.

The Kris Lees-trained stablemates Clearly Innocent (Not A Single Doubt), who won the Kingsford-Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) at Eagle Farm in May, and triple Group One winner Le Romain (Hard Spun) round out the five contenders in line for the ATC’s The Everest slot.

Connections of the Darren Weir-trained, Australian Bloodstock-owned Brave Smash are waiting until after Saturday’s Chandler Macleod Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Moonee Valley before committing to a start in The Everest but are confident of securing a slot even if the ATC overlooks their horse.

A winner of two races in Japan, including the SA Royal Cup (Listed, 1600m) in October 2015, Brave Smash is Group Three-placed and was runner-up to Vega Magic (Lope De Vega) in the Regal Roller Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at his first Australian start on 19 August.

The Lindsay Park-trained Vega Magic, who is also a potential runner in The Everest, won Saturday’s Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield at his second run back from a spell.

Luke Murrell of Australian Bloodstock told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday that as many as four slot holders had expressed interest in securing Brave Smash for The Everest after his eye-catching first up performance.

“We had been talking to two parties and on Monday there was another

two who rang and expressed their interest. It is good to hear that we are one of five in line for the ATC’s slot, but I would suggest that he is going to need to win (at Moonee Valley) to earn his slot,” Murrell said.

“We had to make a decision after his last run and he obviously went well, but he was a long way from being ready and that probably showed in the last 50 metres.”

Weir had considered stepping Brave Smash up in distance, but elected to keep him to 1200 metres at this stage of his spring campaign with a view to running in The Everest.

“We were going to run him in the Memsie, but we thought ‘what is our best chance of winning The Everest?’ and that is keeping him mad fresh. The timing of running this weekend is a bit better going into The Everest as well,” Murrell said.

“If he can’t win this weekend, then we don’t want to run in The Everest just to say we have a runner, we want to be able to run in the top two or three.”

Australian Bloodstock also races the Weir-trained Japanese imports Tosen Stardom (Deep Impact), who ran third in the Memsie Stakes on Saturday, and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hopeful Admire Deus (Admire Don).

A strong relationship with prominent Japanese breeder Katsumi Yoshida enabled Murrell and business partner Jamie Lovett to secure Brave Smash earlier this year after racing Tosen Stardom in partnership with Yoshida.

Wednesday 6 September 2017 Australian Turf Club Zero In On The Everest Representative

“In my opinion, racing over there in Japan is like being on a different planet. Nothing anywhere in the world comes close to it and I am convinced at any one time they would have 18 of the best 20 horses in the world,” he said.

“The biggest problem over there (when trying to buy horses to bring to Australia) is how good their prize money is over there. What most people would be prepared to offer to buy a nice horse over there, those owners could win that in one or two starts in Japan.”

Global Glamour Has Everest AuraCo-trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott are hoping to have a

second horse in The Everest, the dual Group One-winning mare Global Glamour, after making the ATC’s initial cut announced yesterday.

The Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner would join stablemate English (Encosta De Lago), who is being backed by Tabcorp, in the race if the four-year-old was chosen by the ATC.

Global Glamour endured an extensive three-year-old career, finishing runner-up in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) and winning the Light Fingers Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) during the summer.

She is being kept to sprinting distances this campaign, with a view of running in the lucrative race at Randwick on 14 October.

Bloodstock agent James Bester manages the syndicate on behalf of the 40 women who race Global Glamour and yesterday made a strong

case for the daughter of Star Witness (Starcraft) to secure a start in The Everest.

He said the sectionals Global Glamour recorded in the Light Fingers Stakes, the fastest recorded by Longines at Randwick in any Group race last season, showed the mare can match it with the nation’s best sprinters.

“We would love to get into a race like The Everest and our filly, which we hope that the ATC will fully appreciate, represents everything that Australian racing is all about and that is the whole syndication concept,” Bester told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Our filly was voted champion three-year-old of New South Wales, and she did that over a mile last spring, but we have always felt that when kept fresh she has so much speed she could indeed be at her best at 1200 metres.”

Global Glamour could run first up in the Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on 30 September and if she did not secure a start in The Everest she would contest the $500,000 City Tattersalls Lightning (Listed, 1200m) at Randwick on the same day.

“It’s great news for all the connections involved. James Bester (managing owner) has campaigned strongly to the ATC and put forward his case. I think she thoroughly deserves a spot,” Bott said.

Group One-winning sprinter Redzel confirmed himself as a leading contender for The Everest with a comfortable first up victory in Saturday’s Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick.

Wednesday 6 September 2017 Global Glamour Has Everest Aura

A winner of the Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) at Doomben in May, Redzel and his Peter and Paul Snowden-trained stablemate Russian Revolution (Snitzel), who resumes in Saturday’s McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at Moonee Valley, are probable runners in The Everest.

Flower Keeps Options Open For EverestAlready, seven of the 12 slot holders have either secured a horse or

linked to a stable, with Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) (Greg Ingham’s G P I Racing), Houtzen (I Am Invincible) (Aquis Farm), She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) (Yu Long Investments) and Fell Swoop (Not A Single Doubt) (Inglis) already assured of a start in The Everest.

The Star Entertainment Group has aligned itself to the Lindsay Park stable, with Vega Magic and Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Redkirk Warrior (Notnowcato) the most likely runners.

Fellow slot owners Coolmore, James Harron Bloodstock, Chris Waller Racing, the Max Whitby Syndicate and Damion Flower’s Jadeskye Racing are yet to finalise their runner for the race.

Coolmore has Lindsay Park-trained Group-winning three-year-olds Formality (Fastnet Rock) and Tulip (Pierro) as potential runners already owned by the international breeding and racing operation who could run in the race if a deal is not reached with connections of a rival horse.

Flower’s Jadeskye Racing part-owns three-year-old Chauffeur (Snitzel), a colt trained by Team Hawkes who was runner-up in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) first up on 26 August and contests Saturday’s Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m).

The $1,600,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate has already been touted as a potential runner in The Everest by Flower, who yesterday said he was waiting until Saturday’s races in Sydney and Melbourne before reconsidering his options.

“I want to watch the races on this weekend because I believe the three-year-old colts could be a really, really good generation, so I just want to wait and see what happens (in the Run To The Rose),” Flower told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Once we get to Golden Rose day, I think that will determine everything. I have still got Chauffeur and the other owners are keen for me to keep the slot open for him, which I am happy to do.

“The 1400 metres will determine whether he is a Caulfield Guineas horse or if he is a really good six furlong horse off a really fast pace who can rattle home.”

The ATC will assess the performances of the five runners it has earmarked in the next few weeks before confirming who will represent the racing body in The Everest.

"They all bring together different form lines, they are all tough gallopers and we'll be watching them closely,'' Pearce said.

"We'll be now able to see them have their first or second runs in their preparation.''

Pearce said the ATC chose to announce the horses it was considering for The Everest to ensure owners had enough time to plan campaigns or seek alternative agreements with slot holders.

"We wanted to be transparent in announcing a short list so others that applied can make appropriate arrangements,'' he said.

"As we know anything can happen in racing and there's a great support program to aim for.''

Australia

Tough Test For Siege Of Quebec

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Siege Of Quebec (Fastnet Rock) is set to step up in class for The Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday. The promising colt was second in The Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) at his first start this preparation and turned in a pleasing piece of work yesterday morning. “Dropping back to the 1100 metres meant he was a little bit out-sprinted but it was a courageous performance," Bott said. "His work was very, very sharp. That's what we needed to see going into a competitive race. There's some quality colts in there."

In-Form Deploy Ready For Theo MarksGerald Ryan is looking forward to running Deploy (Fastnet Rock) in the Theo Marks Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) at Rosehill on Saturday and has his sights on a potential Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) tilt with the five-year-old. Deploy won the Show County Quality (Gr 3, 1200m) first up on 19 August and will be campaigned solely in Sydney this preparation. "I'm not going to run him on rock-hard tracks and I think our tracks in Sydney have a bit more give in them,"

Ryan said. "He may go to the Shannon Stakes and then up to 1600 metres for the Epsom or we might freshen him up and go in something shorter.”

Speedy Houtzen May Not Lead McEwenExciting three-year-old filly Houtzen (I Am Invincible) is not guaranteed to adopt her usual front-running role in the McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at Moonee Valley this weekend. Trainer Toby Edmonds was on hand to watch the filly work at the track yesterday morning and said she does not have to tear off in front. “She got around good, it was her first time around here obviously, although she'd galloped a couple of times at home in the reverse way," Edmonds told Racing.com. "If she draws a nice barrier and they go quick then she can just sit behind them but if she doesn't draw a barrier then we might have to bang her up on the speed again."

Russian Revolution To Stake Everest ClaimCo-trainer Paul Snowden is hopeful Russian Revolution (Snitzel) can stake his claim for a slot in The Everest (1200m) at Randwick next month when he runs in the McEwen Stakes on Saturday. The entire has been talked of as a potential contender for the $10,000,000 sprint and Snowden, who trains with his father Peter, said it was time for the horse to showcase his credentials on the track. "You make your intentions felt that you think the horse is good enough and deserves to run, but the horse has to be going well to be suggested as running, let alone winning,” Snowden said.

Maiden Withdrawn From McEwenLightly raced five-year-old One Hot Dane (Danerich) has been withdrawn from the McEwen Stakes on Saturday by Racing Victoria (RV). The gelding, who has suffered with tendon

issues, has yet to win in four starts and was last sighted running third at Cranbourne in April last year. "The horse is a maiden that hasn't raced for 16 months and we have withdrawn the entry on the basis of its racing profile," RV's executive general manager of racing Greg Carpenter told Racing.com. "The nomination was rejected under LR23 (d), which gives the handicapper the power to reject an entry for a Group race for horses older than three where the horse is a restricted class horse."

Bonneval May Need Dato’ Hit OutLizzie L’Amour (Zabeel) is slightly more forward than her stablemate Bonneval (Makfi), according to co-trainer Murray Baker. The Group One-winning mares are set to run in the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley this weekend. "She (Lizzie L'Amour) trialled up excellently in New Zealand. She's probably the sharpest of the two at a mile, but they should both benefit a bit from the run," Baker told Racing.com. "(Bonneval) is a staying type and will probably get out-paced a bit on Saturday I'd say, unless there's a bit of rain that slows them a bit."

Banish Up To Atlantic Jewel TestPromising Godolphin-raced filly Banish (Lonhro) is set to step up in class for the Atlantic Jewel Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday. The James Cummings-trained three-year-old won decisively at Cranbourne first up and turned in a good piece of work alongside the unbeaten Esperance (Bernardini) yesterday morning. "We were very happy with them this morning (Banish and Esperance), they worked nicely in company," stable representative David Charles told Racing.com. "Banish is coming off a good first-up win at Cranbourne completely against the bias and she gets her chance in Listed grade on Saturday.”

Flemington Next For EsperanceHaving worked alongside Banish yesterday morning, exciting three-year-old prospect Esperance is likely to make his reappearance at Flemington on Saturday week. The gelding has won both of his racecourse starts to date, by eight lengths at Echuca and two lengths at Sandown Lakeside, and will return in either the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on the Exford Plate (Listed, 1400m) on 16 September.

Lindsay Park Nominate Three For Morphettville GuineasLindsay Park have nominated three horses for Saturday’s Morphettville Guineas (Listed, 1600m). Three-year-old colts Eshtiraak (Street Cry) and Mutamayel (Snitzel) have been entered alongside thrice-raced filly Rimraam (Commands) for the $100,000 race. A total of 17 runners have been nominated for the Morphettville Guineas, including Group Three winner Aspect (Pluck) who heads up three entries for Tony McEvoy. Click here to view the Morphettville nominations.

Derby Contender Runs At SandownThe Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained Weather With You (Teofilo) will bid to break his maiden at Sandown Hillside today ahead of a potential VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) campaign. The gelding has yet to win in three starts but was second in the Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Ellerslie in April when last sighted. "He's a Melbourne-owned horse and if he measures up we hope he can make the Derby," Baker said. "We like him, that's why he's over here. He's by Teofilo who is an outstanding sire. It's 1400 metres (today) and he's probably a 1600 to 2000-metre type but it's a nice race to start off in."

Jessamin Returns From Long SpellThe unbeaten three-year-old Jessamin (Stratum) is set to make her belated return over 1200 metres at Warwick Farm today. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained filly, who ran third in a Randwick barrier trial on 21 August, made a winning debut last November but was spelled thereafter following a setback.

“She had a good long spell after having a slight setback early on. She just needed a little bit of time," Bott said. "She did a few things wrong (in her trial) but I think she's a quality filly for us going forward."

Avdulla To Ride Chautauqua In EverestJockey Brenton Avdulla has secured the ride aboard leading Everest contender Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago). Part-owner Rupert Legh confirmed yesterday that Avdulla, who has ridden the champion sprinter in two recent trials, would ride him first-up in The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) at Randwick on 16 September and also in the $10,000,000 sprint on 14 October. “Happy to have Brenton on. He’s familiar with the horse, having been on him at two recent trials, and he seemed the obvious choice,’’ Legh told Herald Sun.

Hartnell Gallops At Moonee Valley

Dual Group One winner Hartnell (Authorized) was put through his paces with a racecourse gallop at Moonee Valley yesterday morning. The gelding is set to tackle the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) on 16 September next up but future assignments are yet to be decided. "He's fantastic and has done extremely well since his first-up win at Caulfield and we're looking forward to Saturday week," David Charles said. "It's a month between runs so James thought it was a good opportunity to take him away to give him a gallop and we're happy with the way he's come through it."

Moir Aim For Sweet SherryGroup Two winner Sweet Sherry (Bel Esprit) is being geared up for a tilt at the A J Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) by Sutton Grange-based

trainer Brent Stanley. The four-year-old mare, who won the Euclase Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Morphettville in May, pleased her trainer in a racecourse gallop at Moonee Valley yesterday morning and is likely to tackle the $500,000 sprint first up on 29 September.

Chocante On Target For CupNew Zealand raider Chocante (Shocking) remains on course for a tilt at the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in November following a good third behind Winx (Street Cry) in the Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) on Saturday. "We knew he couldn't win, but we expected him to run a lot better than his price indicated ($81)," trainer Stephen Marsh said of the Group Two winner. "It was everything we hoped for and more, only Winx passed him in the straight. He's not a miler, it was well short of his best and he pulled up extremely well."

Playing God Colts Win TrialsTwo colts from the first crop of Wundgrup Stud-based Playing God (Blackfriars) won the first two two-year-old barrier trials of the season at Belmont on Monday morning. Wakan Tanka and Platoon were sent straight to the lead in their respective 400 metre trials before going on to score comfortably. The pair are both trained by Neville Parnham, who prepared Playing God to land back to back victories in the Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) at Ascot in 2010 and 2011. Playing God is standing for a fee of $4,400 (inc GST) this spring.

Dwyer Horse Returns Positive TestTrainer Henry Dwyer has indicated he will plead guilty before the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board tomorrow after one of his horses returned a positive sample to a banned substance at a country jump-out. Racing Victoria stewards received a report from Racing Analytical Services confirming a positive swab taken from the Dwyer-trained Heir To The Throne (Pentire) at the Burrumbeet jump-outs on June 22. Heir To The Throne returned a positive sample to phenylbutazone and oxyphenbutazone, a non steroidal anti-inflammatory which is a prohibited substance under the rules of racing.

Volpe Veloce’s Brother To TrialRaposa Rapida (Foxwedge) will have a barrier trial at Cambridge tomorrow ahead of his return to the track. The three-year-old colt, who is a brother to the high-class Group Two-winning mare Volpe Veloce, ran fourth on his debut at Te Awamutu in May at his only racecourse outing to date. “He’s coming up well, he’s a lovely horse,” Cambridge-based trainer Stephen Marsh said. “We’ll have a look around for a suitable race after he’s trialled.”

Florence Jean Still A Gold Trail ChancePromising filly Florence Jean (Pins) remains a potential runner in the Gold Trail Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Hawke’s Bay on 23 September. The John Morell-trained filly, who has won two of her three starts to date, missed the first day of the Hawke’s Bay carnival with a virus. “We’re working her along quietly,” Morell said. “She’s eating again now and feeling livelier so we’ll go down for the Gold Trail, she usually races well fresh. I’m hoping she can get up to 1400 metres and a mile later. She relaxes so I think she will run on alright.”

Promise To Reign Close To TriallingGroup Two placegetter Promise To Reign (Manhattan Rain) is nearing a barrier trial ahead of her spring preparation. The Moira and Kieran Murdoch-trained five-year-old mare finished eighth in the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at her penultimate start and is reportedly making steady progress ahead of her return to action. “She’s not far from trialling, I’m very happy with her and the way she is looking,” Moira Murdoch said.

Julinsky Prince RetiredDual Group One winner Julinsky Prince (Darci Brahma) has been retired from racing. The eight-year-old won the Windsor Park Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) and Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in 2015 and amassed NZ$594,690 in prize money earnings. “I had a meeting with (owner-breeder) John

Bromley and we’ve decided to retire him,” trainer Fraser Auret said. “He’s been a very special horse to us – he was our first two-year-old winner, my 100th winner and my first Group One winner.”

Asia

Convincible Seeks Valley Hat-TrickThe Francis Lui-trained Convincible (I Am Invincible) will bid to secure a Happy Valley hat-trick when racing over 1200 metres at the track this evening. The six-year-old will be partnered by Karis Teetan, who was in the saddle at each of his last two victories, and the jockey is hopeful of a big run following a promising barrier trial. “He trialled against some very nice horses and he felt great,” Teetan said. “He built up a lot of speed late though so I just had to let him build his momentum and he finished off nicely. Hopefully he can run to that level on Wednesday.”

War Affair Tunes Up For Jumbo JetThe Bruce Marsh-trained War Affair (O’Reilly) warmed up for the Jumbo Jet Trophy (SGP Gr 3, 1400m) on Sunday with a barrier trial victory at Kranji yesterday. The 2014 Singapore Horse of the Year was a close up fourth in the Chairman’s Trophy (SGP Gr 2, 1800m) at his last start on 6 August and he will be ridden by Craig Grylls this weekend. “I was happy with his trial this morning but he faces a big challenge in the Jumbo Jet Trophy,” Marsh conceded. “It’s a weight-for-age race and he is definitely well-in at the weights, but he’s taking on some very good horses.”

Browne To Ride At KranjiThe Singapore Turf Club has granted a one-day licence to Queensland-based jockey Damian Browne to ride at the Jumbo Jet Trophy meeting at Kranji on Sunday. The 44-year-old, who was second aboard Laughing Gravy (Primus) in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (SGP Gr 1, 1800m) on his last visit to Singapore in June, has been booked by trainer Cliff Brown to ride Australian-bred Elite Excalibur (Fastnet Rock) in the S$200,000 race.

International

Eminent Confirmed For LeopardstownThe Sir Peter Vela-raced three-year-old Eminent (Frankel) will run in the Irish Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) at Leopardstown on Saturday, trainer Martyn Meade has confirmed. The colt ran out an impressive winner of the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano (Gr 2, 2000m) at Deauville at his last start, and he will be ridden by Frankie Dettori for the first time in the €1,250,000 feature this weekend. "The plan is to run and Frankie Dettori rides,” Meade told the Racing Post.

Barney Roy Straight To AscotGroup One-winning colt Barney Roy (Excelebration) will sidestep the Irish Champion Stakes on Saturday and instead head straight to Ascot for British Champions Day on 21 October. The Godolphin-raced colt was third in the International Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2.5f) at York last month and has been given a short break by trainer Richard Hannon. "He will now go to Champions Day for either the mile (QEII) or the Champion Stakes," Hannon told At The Races. "He was entered early on in the year in Ireland, but he is not going there as he had a hard enough race in the International."

Cox Hoping Rain Stays AwayTrainer Clive Cox is hoping that forecast rain does not materialise at Haydock ahead of Harry Angel’s (Dark Angel) run in the Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 6f). The last start July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) winner broke the track record in the Sandy Lane Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Haydock earlier in the season and would prefer a sounder surface. “He showed the ability to break the track record in the Sandy Lane which is something we’re very proud of and has continued an upward curve since,” Cox said. “He’s got form on good to soft ground, winning the Mill Reef, and I’m quite relaxed really but would obviously prefer less rather than more rain.”

The Tin Man Well Ahead Of Sprint CupNewmarket trainer James Fanshawe is looking forward to tackling the Sprint Cup at Haydock on Saturday with dual Group One-winning

sprinter The Tin Man (Equiano). The five-year-old was eighth in the July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) last time but ran a good second in the Haydock Group One last year. "He's so difficult to judge at home, but whereas this time last year he went to Haydock after a setback, this time he's had a clear run,” Fanshawe told the Racing Post. "At Newmarket he didn't run so well but he's had a nice break since. He was second in the race last year on very soft ground and we're looking forward to taking him back."

Orange And George Set For RematchBig Orange (Duke Of Marmalade) and the Lloyd Williams-part owned Order Of St George (Galileo) are set to face off again in the Irish St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m6f) at the Curragh on Sunday. Big Orange narrowly came out on a top in a stirring finish to the Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m4f) at Royal Ascot in June when the pair last met, and they feature among 22 confirmations for the Group One on Sunday. Dartmouth (Dubawi), who is raced by The Queen, also remains in

contention, alongside Dal Harraild (Champs Elysees) and Flymetothestars (Sea The Stars).

Ribchester To Run In MoulinThe Godolphin-raced Ribchester (Iffraaj) will run in the Prix du Moulin (Gr 1, 1600m) at Chantilly on Sunday. The three-time Group One winner was second on testing ground in the Sussex Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Goodwood last month and trainer Richard Fahey is pleased with the colt’s condition. "He's not letting me give him a holiday," Fahey told www.godolphin.com. "He's in such great order, we'll take him racing again this weekend, in Paris. When he came back from Goodwood, I thought a little break would do him good. I put him on the treadmill for eight days, but he kept telling me he wanted to get back racing again.”

Usherette Regains Winning ThreadHigh-class mare Usherette (5 m Shamardal - Monday Show by Maria’s Mon) took full advantage

of a drop in class to win the Prix de la Cochere (Listed, 1600m) at Maisons-Laffitte yesterday. The Godolphin-raced and Andre Fabre-trained five-year-old, who won twice at Group Two level last year, was sixth behind Roly Poly (War Front) in the Prix Rothschild (Gr 1, 1600m) at her last start. Eased in grade, she beat Game Theory (Aussie Rules) by a short-neck with Ettisaal (Dubawi) a further half a length behind in third.

19 For Medaglia d’OroBolt d’Oro (2 c ex Globe Trot by A.P. Indy) preserved his unbeaten record in the Del Mar Futurity (Gr 1, 7f) at Del Mar on Monday evening to provide Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado) with his 19th Group / Grade One winner and 105th stakes winner. The Mick Ruis-trained colt was delivered late from off the pace to beat Zatter (Midnight Lute) by three quarters of a length, with Run Away (Run Away And Hide) a further four and three quarter lengths behind in third. Darley shuttler Medaglia d’Oro is standing for a fee of $110,000 (inc GST) at Kelvinside this spring. Click here to view the race replay.

Flower part-owns Chauffeur (Snitzel) who will also run in Saturday’s Run To The Rose. “I didn’t buy the slot just for him.”

Trainer Chris Waller. His position remains unclear but he does not, right now, appear to have an obvious candidate from within his stable.

Coolmore: The possibility of Caravaggio (Scat Daddy) travelling from Ireland is not necessarily expunged. I understand four horses at Ballydoyle have been vaccinated for possible southern hemisphere travel. He’s expected to run at the Curragh on Sunday. He could commence two weeks quarantine on the 11th or 12th and then be shipped to Australia on the 26th.

The case for is that he’s unbeaten on soft or softish ground and there’s every chance it will be wet in Sydney; that his past two defeats have been excusable and that Coolmore is standing - in Australia - another son of Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) in No Nay Never. The case against is that he’d have to carry 58 kilos as a northern hemisphere three-year-old as he is six months (or so) older than than the southern hemisphere three-year-olds.

Might Coolmore consider Tulip, the daughter of one of their younger stallions Pierro (Lonhro), if she were to win the Run To The Rose on Saturday? Three-year-old fillies carry 51 kilos in The Everest. Catchy and Missrock, daughters of Fastnet Rock (Danehill), could be possibles.

Menari (Snitzel), Hellbent (I Am Invincible), Russian Revolution (Snitzel) and Supido (Sebring) are others, expected to run this coming weekend, who might come into consideration for all slot holders.

@anz_news anzbloodstocknews.com| 11 |

THE FIELD: As I understand it, after various discussions yesterday with Racing New South Wales and the Australian Turf Club, there is no onus on any slot holder to declare their runner until acceptance time which is 10am on 10 October - five days before the race.

“This is the beauty of the concept. It will continue to generate publicity all the way through to the race,” says Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'Landys.

THE SLOTS: No further trading of the ownership of the slots is permitted after 3 October.

EMERGENCIES: It will be a condition of entry for the $500,000 City Tattersalls Lightning (Listed, 1200m), the ‘consolation’ on the same day, that if a place becomes available in The Everest then you must run in The Everest. Racing NSW will determine which four acceptors for the Lightning will become the four emergencies and the slot holder may then choose one of the four to represent them in the event of their original horse being unfit to run. Thus, accept for the Lightning and you might fluke a run in The Everest.

THE PRIZEMONEY: The first prize is, in fact, $4,793,700 which is the advertised $5,800,000 less the trainer ($574,200) and jockey ($287,100) percentages plus $58,000 deducted for the NSW Jockey’s Fund and $78,000 for the Stablehand’s Prizemoney scheme.

In the event of an emergency horse replacing an original nominee then the first prize will be split as follows: $2,469,169 to the slot licensee and $2,324,531 to the owner/s of the emergency runner (should it win of course).

Known State Of Play: Barring misadventure - five confirmed

runners. CHAUTAUQUA (Encosta De Lago) will take the Greg Ingham-Andrew Williams Bloodstock secured slot; SHE WILL REIGN (Manhattan Rain - Yulong Investments); HOUTZEN (I Am Invincible - Aquis Farm); FELL SWOOP (Not A Single Doubt - Inglis) and

ENGLISH (Encosta De Lago - TABcorp). Of that group, only Houtzen is expected to run this weekend.

The host club, the Australian Turf Club, yesterday announced that they have short-listed five horses. They are BRAVE SMASH (Tosen Phantom) who is expected to run at Moonee Valley on Saturday; CLEARLY INNOCENT (Not A Single Doubt); GLOBAL GLAMOUR (Star Witness); LE ROMAIN (Hard Spun) and REDZEL (Snitzel).

Star Entertainment is aligned with David Hayes and VEGA MAGIC (Lope De Vega) looks the logical choice but the in-form Hayes camp still has REDKIRK WARRIOR (Notnowcato) waiting to reappear.

Unknowns: Slot holder Max Whitby says he’s keeping

his powder dry: “No decision yet. In fact, I think the later we leave it the better. It’s a $1,800,000 investment over the three years so we are treating it very seriously and I’m having discussions every day about it. I’ve short-listed five or six but there’s no pressing deadline.”

James Harron says that PARIAH (Redoute’s Choice) remains the primary choice but no decision has been finalised. Pariah will run in Saturday’s Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) and then, all being well, proceed to the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) on 23 September. “The Golden Rose is absolutely his number one target. We can consider the Everest after that. The next few weeks will be very important in confirming the sprint pecking order and I believe there’s still several horses out there who could emerge with genuine claims. The Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) may well be a key race and that’s not until 29 September.”

Damion Flower said, last night, on Sky Channel: “My list is probably around ten. Chauffeur is on the list but he might be a miler. I’ve got one from left field in the group too. I’m backing my judgement that I can find the winner and I can wait.”

In a bold, front running display, former Perth galloper Vega Magic (Lope De Vega) overpowered a high class field to win last Saturday’s $1,000,000 MRC

Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield. The big, powerful five-year-old gelding

defeated Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars), another ex Perth star, by a length and three quarters with Japanese-bred Tosen Stardom (Deep Impact) just a head further back in third place. Race time was 01:23.36.

Vega Magic and Black Heart Bart are great advertisements for the strength of Perth racing and are the latest in a long line of top class horses to come from Western Australia since the 1960s with the ability to

win major races in Melbourne, a list which includes Aquanita (Wateringbury), Placid Ark (Arkenstone), Northerly (Serheed) and Miss Andretti (Ihtiram) to name but a small selection.

The record to date of Vega Magic is impressive, 12 wins from 17 starts, which have pushed his prize money earnings past the $2,000,000 mark. The Memsie was his second Group One success having won The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) in May shortly after joining the Hayes/Dabernig stable.

He now has five black type victories, the first two recorded in Perth. Although he is yet to race in the Sydney direction, Vega Magic now looms as a strong contender for The Everest

(1200m) at Randwick on 14 October although he is still to secure a slot.

Bred by West Australian Wally Daly who races him with a family member, Vega Magic is far the best horse resulting from four shuttle seasons for his sire Lope De Vega (Shamardal), who stood at Patinack Farm in NSW between 2011 and 2014.

Some 334 living foals resulted in Australia but to date the only other stakes winners among them are French Fern, who won the Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), Group Three winner Santa Ana Lane and Man Of His Word, a Listed winner in Brisbane.

Lope De Vega, now permanently based at Ballylinch Stud in Ireland, has fared rather

better in Europe where his best runners are Group One winners Belardo and Jemayel among a career total of 28 black type winners. The latest to join the list being two-year-old filly Soustraction who last Sunday captured the Prix d’Aumale (Gr 3, 1600m) at Chantilly. Another of Lope De Vega’s feature winners is The Right Man, a Group One winner in Dubai and a multiple stakes winner in France.

Belardo, winner of the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at two years and of the Lockinge Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at four years, retired to stud in Ireland in 2017 and is currently covering at Haunui Farm in New Zealand.

Linebred 3 x 3 to Machiavellian (Mr Prospector), Lope De Vega was the champion middle distance three-year-old in France in 2010 after completing the Classic double of the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m) at Longchamp before taking the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2100m) at Chantilly. He also won races over 1400 metres and 1500 metres as a two-year-old.

Vega Magic’s dam Admirable (Magic Albert), also bred by Wally Daly, won two sprint races in Perth, one as a two-year-old. Her other foals include useful Perth winner Mireille (Husson) and Vega Dior (Lope De Vega), a winning, year younger sister to Vega Magic. Admirable was due to foal early this season to Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor).

Starlight Empress (Century), third dam of Vega Magic, comes from an old South Australian family long associated with the late Bart Cummings, as she is a sister to the great trainer’s 1979 Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Century Miss (Century) whose champion sire was perhaps the best sprinter prepared by the South Australian born trainer.

Their unraced dam Gay Chorus (Matrice) was by the high-class sprinter Matrice (Masthead) who created history in the 1972-73 season by becoming Australia’s champion sire, the only South Australia-based horse ever to achieve that honour.

Vega Magic carries a dash of Danehill (Danzig) blood through Danewin (Danehill), sire of his second dam Starglow Express, and it should be noted that Lope De Vega has developed some affinity with Danehill as Belardo is out of a Danehill mare, and others among his stakes winners with Danehill in their backgrounds are French Fern, Santa Ana Lane and Royal Razalma.

VERDICT Sky Treasure is sure to be popular with Joao Moreira up buthe’s likely to be a short price for one that has yet to win and

wasn’t at his best last time and, in a race that should be run at a decent gallop, he’staken on with GREAT TOPLIGHT. The selection hasn’t been at his best at Sha Tinon his last two starts but he’ll be better suited by the return to this track (scene ofboth his wins) and he should get a decent tow from his low draw. Rocket Let Winis another to consider.

BETTING FORECAST: 9-4iThe Sylph, 5iFine With Me, My Blessing, 6iPlay It, PoChing Treasure, 7iHappy Rocky, 10iBo Duke, 25iCity Winner.

VERDICT The Sylph has the services of Moreira but he’s only 1-35 inHong Kong and it could be worth having an each-way interest on

PLAY IT, who was very useful when trained in Ireland by Dermot Weld and, althoughhe’s yet to make much of an impact in Hong Kong, he starts the season on a veryhandy mark, is down in grade and is reunited with Zac Purton. Last season’s dualwinners Po Ching Treasure and My Blessing are others to consider.

VERDICT A typically trappy handicap but one in which SPEEDY WALLYmakes plenty of appeal. He’s a dual winner at this course who

enclosure. He won at this course first time up under today’s rider last season, is on adecent mark and is taken to get the better of California Aspar and reliableyardstick Dr Race. At bigger odds it could be worth keeping an eye on Sangria, despite his double-figure draw.

VERDICT Starlight was on an upward curve towards the end of lastseason, winning twice in May and July. The handicapper has hit

him hard and for that reason FOX SUNTER who finished 1/2l behind him on hislatest outing is taken to come out on top in this battle. Top weight Our Hero will findthis Class 4 company more to his liking and he could go well despite having to giveweight to all.

VERDICT It may be best to concentrate on the two that are moving into thisgrade, namely Imperial Seal and GO GO WIN who both look

capable of making the jump. The former deserves his chance in this company afterwinning four times last season but he may have to give way to the selection who, after finishing runner-up on four consecutive occasions, finally got his reward on hisfinal start of the campaign.
