From the OfficeKia Ora, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Kia orana, Nisa Bula Vinaka, Fakalofa lahi atu, Taloha Ni, Namaste, Annyong, Warm greetings, to all Duffy Books in Homes schools, sponsors, role models, supporters and families.

At Parliament during Government Book Week we officially celebrated our 10 millionth book and 20 years of Duffy Books in Homes. Members of Parliament, past and present supporters of Duffy Books in Homes and some special children participated in this breakfast event hosted by Hon Hekia Parata and with guest speaker, reknowned neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson.

It was a great opportunity to reflect on the many successes of the programme and those of our schools, teachers, partners and supporters who dared to dream and support the Duffy vision – breaking the cycle of booklessness and inspiring a love of reading. Two special moments came when Charles Ropitini, one of the original Duffy kids, spoke of his experiences and then helped present the 10 millionth book to Kawana Snow of Te Kura Maori o Nga Tapuwae.

Term Two was certainly a busy one with three major events around Dr. Ben’s visit in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland. We are so grateful to Kevin Drinkwater, CIO of Mainfreight for all his work and endless support in bringing Dr. Ben and Candy Carson to New Zealand.

Also, our regular Term Two programme, including the Scholastic Caught Being a Good Mum Award and Schools and Sponsors Get in Touch Week proved popular with the responses received in the office.

September is an exciting month – not only because of the elections but also the Scholastic Caught Being a Good Dad Award and regular Book Offer 3 Role Model Assemblies. We have had some great support from new sponsors taking on some of our schools and we hope that you find time to make it along to a school assembly and help give out those books in person.

We can’t wait to see some great photos from these events that we can feature in our next newsletter.

Enjoy your celebrations for Term Three!

Happy Reading

September 2014

The first week of July was one of the biggest ever for Duffy Books in Homes. Here are just some of the highlights!

Ten Million Duffy Books

The Minister of Education, Hon Hekia Parata, hosted a special breakfast at Parliament on July 3rd, which also celebrated 20 years since Duffy Books in Homes was formed. Dr. Ben Carson was the guest speaker and gave an inspiring address about the importance of education.

Also featured were children from Camberley Primary School, the first ever Duffy school. They performed for the guests and were excited to visit

Kawana Snow’s winning entry

I love being a Duffy kid because I love to read and learn words that I have never heard before. My Nan told my mum and my mum told me that a house without books is like a house without windows. Being a Duffy kid means I have windows in my house.

Parliament. Charles Ropitini, one of the original Duffy kids from Camberley Primary gave an emotional speech about the effect the programme had on him.

MPs, sponsors and a multitude of Duffy supporters from years gone by joined us to celebrate these two milestones. Special thanks go to the American Chamber of Commerce and Mainfreight for helping to make the event such a success.

After a nationwide competition to find one lucky winner, Kawana Snow from Te Kura Maori o Nga Tapuwae was chosen to travel to Wellington to attend the event and receive the 10 millionth Duffy book from Hon Hekia Parata and Charles Ropitini. Kawana entered a competition to describe, in 50 words or less, why he loved being a Duffy kid. His winning entry is below.

In 2012 Ben Carson spoke to thousands of Auckland children about his life story and how he made it out of poverty to become one of the world’s most well-known doctors.

This time it was Christchurch’s turn to hear Dr. Carson’s inspirational message. Kids from around Christchurch made their way to CBS Arena on July 2 where More FM’s Simon Barnett was the MC for a memorable morning.

Much to their surprise and delight, the kids were also entertained by X-Factor stars Moorhouse.

Sanitarium once again supported the event by providing Up&Go drinks to everyone who attended so the kids went away well fed – both in mind and body!

Before Dr. Ben Carson took a well-deserved break he made time to be the guest of honour and keynote speaker at a fundraising event at the Langham Auckland. With MC Jackie Clarke, it was a hugely entertaining night and a successful one for Duffy Books in Homes.

Aside from yet another captivating speech from Ben Carson, other highlights included a wonderful opening performance from Bairds Mainfreight Primary and St Joseph’s School Grey Lynn, put together by Duffy Role Model and musician Anonymouz. On top of this

were songs from rising star Tayla Alexander and the boys from the Auckland Grammar School InZone project. Finally, no one will forget the hilarious introduction of Ben Carson by Iavana Seuala, a former Duffy kid and a speaker to watch in the future.

Thanks to the generous support of Spark Digital (formerly Gen-i), a host of other sponsors and those that attended, donated and bid on auction items, we raised more than $150,000 – enough to pay for more than 36,000 books for Duffy children around the country!

Dr. Ben Carson’s keynote address

As the end of term approaches it’s almost time to say goodbye to the Duffy Theatre for another year. The teams have a few schools to catch up with in Term 4 and then it’s time for a well-deserved break.

Team Blue welcomed a new recruit in Term 2 - Joanna Tuala Seumalo (or Jojo for short) stepped in to play Rosie in Duffy, King of Books and was immediately a great hit with the kids.

Selfies are the craze these days – and Maxwell, Gerry and Jojo of Team Blue are no exception!

Mums are tops with Duffy kidsIn the week leading up to Mother’s Day 519 Mums were recognised for making an extra effort at their children’s schools.

Scholastic New Zealand gave a lucky Mum from each school involved in the programme a book and certificate to thank them for the effort they put in to their school and community.

This year’s recipients of the Scholastic Caught Being a Good Mum Award received Feed a Family of Six for under $20 by Jas McPhee. This South Auckland mum set up a Facebook page of great value recipes which now has more than 75,000 followers. Of course, the next step was to write a book to share her great meals!

Kids in Duffy schools around the country told their school just why their mum should win an award which celebrates their vital contribution to school life.

Schools voted, held writing competitions or even made lucky draws if the decision was too tough.

Duffy Books in Homes General Manager, Linda Vagana, says “We’re so lucky that our friends at Scholastic have been able to help kids show just important their mums are for all these years.”

RIGHT: The team at Beach Haven School summed up this winner perfectly!

“Lesley Downes was the lucky recipient of the Caught Being Good Mum award. Lesley is a relatively new mum at Beach Haven as her son, Oliver, started in February. She has already been a tower of strength helping out in the junior area of the school in various ways and bringing in things for the classroom. Lesley says that she loves being a Beach Haven mum. She does numerous things for her son and has had a nameplate put on the door of her car – Ollie’s taxi.” Sponsor needed

Just to say a huge ‘thank you’ for organising the speaker for our Term 1 Role Model Assembly. I know FPS thoroughly enjoyed listening to Tony speak. We divided our children into juniors and seniors – Tony tailored his talk accordingly. He was absolutely entertaining and he got the message through – reading is very important.Thank you once again,Mabel Stewart, Finlayson Park SchoolSchool Sponsor: Dr. John Dunn

I just wanted to give you some positive feedback on the Duffy Show that was presented to our school yesterday. What a spectacular performance from these three young people. They were truly inspiring to our students. I thought the message in the show was also very worthwhile. Everyone benefits from reading, even sports heroes! All of our students enjoyed the show from our youngest age 5 to our oldest aged 12. Thank you for visiting our school.Oceanview Heights SchoolSchool Sponsor: Mainfreight Timaru

Just a little note to say how we really enjoyed our role model Nathan. We could have listened to him regale us with his adventures well over his allotted time. What a time he has had and the fact that he is giving back to our children and hopefully inspiring them to branch out and experience what is out there is just wonderful. He finished up with a cool little Maori clapping game and luckily I captured it on film!! Please pass on our thanks to Nathan and all the organizers that make Duffy Books in Homes and associated Role Models give up their time to make a difference to our students. It is truly appreciated.Kind Regards from all the staff at Awanui School. Rhonda Oien.School Sponsor: The Hefford Family Trust

On Monday 14 April 2014, a cinematographer called Alun Bollinger visited our school. This was part of the Duffy Role Model scheme. Alun comes from Blacks Point – near Reefton. He talked about books and his career. Alun started working in filming at the age of 17 in 1966, today he is still working as a cinematographer. Some of the things he said was that words are important, one two three are words but represent numbers. These are some of the films he has done Heavenly Creatures, The Frighteners, Goodbye Pork Pie, Oyster Farmer and Perfect Strangers. He said that being a slow reader can be a good thing because you are able to remember the book and what happened. If you want to make a 3D movie you have to have two cameras rolling at the same time, he finds this really exciting. Some people say 3D is just a fad but he finds it fun and thinks it will be around for a long time. He talked about comparing a book and a movie, a book has more information than a movie and lots of people enjoy the books rather than the movie story. A movie script is usually about 150 one-sided pages long compared to books that are often 200-400 pages. Scripts are one sided so that the people using them can write all over them. Mr Bollinger said he has kept all his scripts with scribbled notes from all of the movies he has worked in. Reading can help us with movie directing.Kaylee and Charmaine, Blaketown SchoolSponsor needed Our school have just had the pleasure of watching the Duffy, King of Books show and it was the best show I think my Year 4 children have seen. I am their 54 year old teacher and I thought it was the funniest show I have attended. In fact I told the actors that I would have paid good money to attend Duffy, King of Books. Well done - our kids thought Uncle Bingo and the gang were “cool.” Keep up the great work.Diane, Dawson SchoolSchool Sponsor: Frucor Beverages Ltd.
