This annual report was produced and distributed with the support of
Making books part of a healthy childhood since 1989.www.reachoutandread.org Reach Out and Read
Dear Friends of Reach Out and Read,2008-09 was a year of tremendous growth
and change for Reach Out and Read. In spiteof the challenges posed by this tough economy,we were able to reach 500,000 additionalchildren in need, thanks to the loyal support ofour donors and the hard work, creativity, anddedication of the ROR Staff, Coalition Leaders, and medical practitioners, including NationalMedical Director Dr. Perri Klass. We have alsoreorganized our National Board of Directors, allowing us to capitalize on the individualstrengths of each Board Member.
Now, I am thrilled to announce that wehave just completed a long, thoughtful, andsuccessful search for ROR’s new ChiefExecutive Officer. It is my great pleasure tointroduce you to Earl Martin Phalen, a provenleader whose incredible passion for improvingchildren’s lives through education will help us
do an even better job of gettingbooks into the hands of the childrenand families who need them most.
Earl has dedicated his life tostrengthening low-income familiesand communities. As a student atHarvard Law School in 1992, Earlfounded Building Educated Leadersfor Life (BELL), a nonprofitorganization that tutors and mentorsschoolchildren and keeps themfocused on the goal of graduatingfrom college. During his tenure as CEO, Earlincreased BELL’s annual revenue from $12,500to $25.5 million and grew the organization intoa national nonprofit that educates more than12,000 scholars annually. He is a recipient of aMind Trust Fellowship and is also the Founderand Chair of Summer Advantage USA, whichcombats summer learning loss.
Earl’s proven fundraising skills, his strong background in nonprofitmanagement, and his passion forchildren’s literacy will open newopportunities for ROR. I amconfident that his leadership willtake ROR to new heights, and lookforward to introducing him to youin person sometime soon.
On behalf of the Board ofDirectors, thank you for all you do tosupport ROR and its critical mission.
Warm regards,
Judy NewmanChair, National Board of Directors
Greetings from Reach Out and Read
“Sometimes in the exam room, when I hand a book to achild, I realize it's the firstbook that child has ever held.Too many children aregrowing up without books, and when economic times gettougher, there's less moneyfor books, less time, morestress on families. Reach Outand Read gets books to thosechildren, and also helps theirparents understand the powerof reading together tostrengthen families, and helpour patients learn.”
– Perri Klass, M.D.National Medical Director
“I am honored by the opportunity to become the CEO of Reach Out and Read. I havelearned a great deal about ROR, and I can say without reservation that this is one of thebest nonprofit organizations in America. Few nonprofits have the same evidence base(11 studies), scale (3.8 million children served at 4,500 locations), and impact (significantdevelopmental gains and higher test scores). Because of our extraordinary staff and teamof 19,000 volunteer doctors, nurses, and caring adults, all of this is achieved at anextremely low cost. Today, 35% of American children show up to kindergartenunprepared to learn. We will work tirelessly in the years ahead to ensure that all childrenenter school prepared for success.”
– Earl Martin Phalen, Chief Executive Officer

bringing children’sstories to life.
Read and Romp is ROR’s signaturechildren’s event that includes music, food, and fun-filled activities featuring belovedchildren’s stories.
Last year, more than 500 children and familymembers joined us at the event in Boston –some learned yoga at the “My Daddy is aPretzel” station, some built toweringstructures on “Mike Mulligan’s” constructionsite, and others cuddled with baby bunniesat the “Runaway Bunny” station.
Read and Romp Boston raises enoughmoney to start up 15 brand-new ROR Sites!
