Read, Deed, Run Do you like to run? Do you like to read? Do you like to do good things for others? If you answered YES to any of the questions aboveCopeland’s Read, Deed & Run program is for you! Copeland is excited to bring back the Read, Deed, Run program for the 2012-2013 Fourth AND Fifth Grade classes! Students in the program commit to a Reading, Good Deed and Running Marathon! This means students will run a total of 26.2 miles, read 26 Just Right books (or 2600 pages) and do 26 hours of good deeds for someone or something else. Each week RDR participants will meet to discuss books, deeds, stretching and nutrition. We‟ll either do a 1 mile run or complete an on-campus good deed, sometimes we‟ll do both. The program culminates in May with students running their final 1.2 miles in a “race” for their finisher‟s t-shirt and medal at Lone Star College Cy Fair. This program is modeled after a program started by the St. Louis Marathon and is intended to have a positive impact on the whole child, while strengthening the family unit through community service. This is a year long commitment, so please consider the time commitment (almost every Tuesday from 3:30 4:30). RDR staff will provide the opportunity for 15 1- mile runs and 10 on-campus deeds at our Tuesday meetings, but the participants and their families are responsible for the remainder of the required mileage and deeds and all of the reading. If you‟re interested, please fill out the application on the back of this page

On the Tuesdays that we are on campus for a Run or a Deed, the kids will meet in the library after school and they will eat a snack brought from home.

The students will then be divided into their groups and the coaches will hold a short informational meeting and then run, or the kids will complete a deed.

Pick up time is 4:30 on both Run and Deed days.

Students are required to read 26 books, or

2600 pages. Books read in school CAN count towards the

Read requirement. Books must be on the student’s reading level. Record of the books read will be kept in the

student’s RDR book.

For every 5 books read, the student will earn an RDR book charm. For the 26th book, the student will earn the RDR Reading Trophy charm.

Students are required to perform 26 deeds in or for the community.

one deed = one hour of service 10 Deeds will be provided on campus, the additional 16 Deeds are the

student’s responsibility. Deed opportunities will be communicated throughout the program.

If you know of any community service needs, please feel free to share. An on-campus Deed opportunity is NEVER required, it is completely up to the

student and their family to decide if they wish to participate. Students may earn up to 6 Deed credits for deeds performed for teachers

or the PTO on campus. If you are unsure about a Deed, contact your child’s coach for deed approval.

For every 5 deeds performed the student will earn

an RDR citizenship charm.

On Run Days, students will run around the neighborhood. Staff or parents will serve as crossing guards at busy intersections.
