Merritt onboard with Kinder Morgan’s TMX Last week, a freedom of information request revealed the City of Vancouver has spent at least $323,000 fighting the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion. And this week, SFU academic Tom Gunton argued that Canada’s oil indus- try might not need the new pipeline once it’s complete. He thinks that with all the projects under development — Trans Mountain expansion, Keystone XL & En- ergy East pipelines — along with recent forecasts showing dramatically less growth in Canadian oil output, the coun- try will wind up with massive overcapac- ity to move oil. Meanwhile, two weeks ago, Kinder Morgan Inc said it has booked all of the 22,000 barrels per day of capacity it had offered to the oil industry, after earlier in the month, commitment for the pipeline project had dipped 3%, or 22,000 barrels per day, when the US pipeline company hiked tolls. The total approved capacity is 890,000 barrels per day. The company says that all available long-term capacity on the pipeline has now been contracted to 13 customers. About 80% of the capacity on the ex- panded pipeline has 15- and 20-year commitments, with the remaining 20% reserved for spot volumes as required by regulators. And now, the next steps in- clude arranging financing for the project. Here in Merritt, Mayor Neil Menard is excited for what the project will do for jobs & the economy of this town. He’s raring to go, “Bring it on!” he says.
