Alma and Austri Fletcher of Wood-side watched solitary headlamps snake up the mountain ahead of them as they hiked toward the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the early morning hours of July 25.

The mother and daugh-ter had started the climb at midnight, donning headlamps and extra clothing. “It was like a torchlight parade,” said Alma, who was taking on the mighty challenge of climbing the highest mountain in Africa at the age of 72. The scene reminded Austri, 41, of the Seven Dwarfs from Snow White, marching off to work. Ahead of them, the women could see only the feet of the guides whom Alma and Austri had hired at the hotel at the bottom of the mountain. Most of the lights were going up the

mountain, but several were descending, Alma recalls. They passed at least four hikers who weren’t able to brave either the steep incline or the altitude, and Alma knew that she

was slowing down, too. “I didn’t expect the last (portion of the) climb to be so difficult. I didn’t have enough energy.”

But in the end, she proved that she had just enough — with a little help from a nutritional supplement taken on the trail and, no doubt, from having kept up over the years a daily physical regimen that has kept her remarkably fit into her eighth decade of life.

REACHING THE SUMMIT

But in the wee hours of that bracingly cold day in July, she didn’t feel all too fit.

At around 3 a.m., Austri thought she and

her mother might have to turn around if Alma couldn’t get her energy up. But as a last resort, she forced down some energy gel, a nutritional supplement used mainly by endurance runners and other athletes; she had been reluctant to take the gel because of her failing appetite, and because she hated the taste. But once she did, her pace picked up almost immediately.

Shortly after sunrise, the women reached Stella Point at the crater rim, at 18,800 feet considered to be the summit of Kiliman-jaro, a volcano. Alma then began the descent from the mountain, while Austri continued hiking to the true peak at 19,340 feet. Reaching the crater rim would be an impressive feat for anyone, especially some-one who’s 72 years old, but Alma smiles and shakes her head when she thinks about it. “I wish we had started (eating the gel) at midnight,” she says, sitting in the liv-ing room of her home off Skyline Boule-vard, near King’s Mountain Road. If she had, she says, she might have joined her daughter for the last 500 feet. The Avenidas senior center will host a caregiver conference, “Aging is a Family Affair,” on Saturday, September 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at 450 Bryant St. in Palo Alto. The conference is for those involved or interested in care-giving issues, including adults caring for elderly parents or an older spouse or friend. Lyn Prashant, an educator and author, will deliver the

keynote speech. A certified grief counselor, Ms. Prashant lectures on various subjects in the aging and caregiver fields. The conference is designed to bring together family and professional caregivers with care-giving experts in ses-sions that explore a variety of topics, from the personal side of caring for older adults to practical solutions, such as

how technology can assist seniors to live high-quality, independent lives. The conference price is $30 for Avenidas members and $35 for non-members through Sep-tember 22. After that date, the price is $40. The fee includes workshop materials, a conti-nental breakfast and lunch. To register or for more infor-mation, call Linda Borders at 289-5419.

lives. By the time they came to a rest that afternoon, they had been hiking for nearly 15 hours.

UNCERTAINTY

Alma’s disappointment at miss-ing her chance to reach the highest peak typifies her eager,

can-do attitude, especially when it comes to feats of physical endur-ance. She had agreed to undertake the five-and-a-half-day trek up the mountain only after Austri found no takers during two years of appealing to friends and co-work-ers to make the trek with her. Even then, Alma was skepti-cal of her chances, especially because they had decided to take the Machame trail, perhaps the hardest route. “I didn’t think I’d make it,” she says. “The hotel staff didn’t think I’d make it.” Alma had doubts about wheth-er she would even be able to start the climb, much less reach the summit. Only two weeks before, she and Austri had walked 200 miles along the path from Le Puy in France to the Spanish border, completing a five-sum-mer-long trek across Spain and part of France that began in Santiago de Compostella in the northwest corner of Spain. Around mile 170, Alma devel-oped edema in her ankle, caus-ing it to swell. She spent the next two weeks resting at the base of Mont Blanc in France with her foot elevated, while Austri hiked up the mountain to acclimate for Kilimanjaro. Alma saw a doctor who feared that she had a blood clot, but was cleared to climb the moun-tain under the condition that she turn around and hike down if her ankle got any worse

SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO

In addition to the altitude, Alma and Austri also had to withstand harsh weather

conditions because Kilimanjaro is in the southern hemisphere; it was the dead of winter in late

July. Alma says that she wore two fleece jackets some nights and slept in a bag that was made for temperatures as low as 20 degrees below zero. The climate continued to change the higher they climbed, from rainforest to high desert to lava rock. Alma and Austri say that the famed glaciers at the top of the peak were breathtaking as they walked beside them, though they have receded dramatically in recent years as the climate has warmed. One of the most difficult sections for the women came on the fourth day, when they had to scramble up the steep, 1,000-foot-high Barranco Wall, made up entirely of lava rocks. If Alma was going to turn back, that was the likeliest place. But her head guide, Charles Lyimo, helped her up the rocks by holding onto her hand while she grasped handholds that had been installed along the route. Despite the strenuous sec-tions, both Alma and Austri say that the climb was easier than they had originally thought it would be.

LOVE OF NATURE, EXERCISE

Alma says that she has been walking religiously since 1958, when she started to

hike in the Sierra Nevada moun-

tain range with the Sierra Club. She met her husband on a back-packing trip in the Sierra. She has climbed Mount Whit-ney in California — the tall-est mountain in the lower 48 states — and trekked in Nepal with Austri and her son Mark in 2000, where she reached the peak of Muktinath, a Buddhist pilgrimage site, at 12,475 feet. She walks for about an hour every morning with a group of friends, and also does yoga, aerobics and swimming. Austri says she trained for about two and a half hours per day in preparation for the trip, mixing aerobics with weight lifting. Alma says that she feels strong-ly about exercising, and wishes that other Americans would do more of it. “It’s cheap to walk every day,” Alma says. “It’s free,” Austri corrects with a grin. After conquering Kilimanjaro, mother and daughter completed their trip with a weeklong safari in Africa — the vacation they had originally planned before they decided to squeeze in the climb. Instead of taking it easy next summer, they’re now entertain-ing the idea of walking along a 200-mile trail along Germany’s Rhine River. A

A longtime resident of Menlo Park, Forest died peacefully at home on Monday, August 28, 2006.

Forest was born and raised in West Winfield, New York by parents, Estelle and George Morgan. His family owned a dairy farm, where from a young age, he learned the value of a strong work ethic which he practiced throughout his life.

During World War II, he proudly served in the Pacific with the 11th Airborne Division as a paratrooper. After the war, he returned to upstate New York where he began his career as a finish carpenter. In 1978, he moved to Menlo Park to be close to his youngest sister. He continued his craft as a master carpenter, endearing himself to his clients with his wonderful workmanship.

Forest loved to bake and began baking fresh bread every

Sunday morning to the delight of his friends and neighbors. Although he did not like strawberries, he grew them for all the children in the neighborhood who were often seen in Forest’s strawberry patch. His generosity was well known and appreci-ated.

He is survived by his son, David Morgan of Utica, New York, his sisters, Benora Brayton of New Hartford, New York and Molly Clough of Menlo Park, CA, and his brother Sewell Morgan of West Winfield, New York. He was predeceased by another brother, Charles Morgan. He was beloved by several nieces, nephews, a great niece, and a great nephew. He will be missed by all.

Memorial gifts may be made to Pathways Hospice, 585 N. Mary Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94085.

The past is easily romanticized. Take, for example, that thrilling age when shipmates scudded through the blue bounding main in sturdy wooden ships driven by the pure wind and white billow-ing sails. They are certainly the old days, but apparently they were not the good old days. Professor Fabio Lopez Lazaro of Santa Clara University will talk about life at sea in days of sail — a life that was “difficult at best and often

unsanitary, uncomfortable and unbearable” — in a lecture at the Museum of American Heritage. The program starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, September 21, in the Frank Livermore Learn-ing Center at the museum, 351 Homer Ave. in Palo Alto. An exhibit of locally crafted model sailing ships opens at 7 p.m. Admission is $5, which is waived for museum members. For more information, call 321-1004 or go to moah.org.

Paul & Gretchen DeStefano (Menlo Park Sellers) say...“I listed my home with Maggie based on the strong recommendation of friends who had worked with her in the past. Shortly after listing, family health problems and unexpected work issues made it impos-sible for me to take an active a role as was expected in repairs, staging, clean-up and the like. Maggie - backed by a remarkably competent and responsive circle of service providers - took care of everything. Thanks entirely to Maggie, the house looked its absolute best and, as a result of this and her expert negotiating skills, we sold at well over the asking price within days. Maggie gets my strongest recommendation.”
