1. Definitions
1. Annual Recording Period (APR) is defined as the 12 month time frame over which annual RE-
Mark report has validity.
2. Electricity Consumption in Annual Reporting Period for which RE-Mark label has validity would
be based on projected figures based on last three year trends within the chosen boundaries.
3. True up Consumption is the difference between projected electricity consumption and actual
consumption for the specified APR, which gets accounted in subsequent annual recording period.
4. Renewable Energy Certificates are the certificates issued by National Load Dispatch Centre of
India to the Renewable Energy power plants under REC scheme as specified by Central
Electricity Regulatory Commission.
5. Renewable Electricity is the electricity generated/sourced from Renewable Energy Source.
6. Renewable Energy Sources such as small hydro, wind, solar including its integration with
combined cycle, biomass, bio fuel cogeneration, urban or municipal waste or such other sources
as recognized or approved by Ministry of New & Renewable Energy of India.
7. Power Exchange means that power exchange which operates with the approval of the Central
Electricity Regulatory Commission (Power Exchange of India Limited)
8. Renewable Percentage is renewable electricity expressed as share in percentage of total
electricity consumption within chosen boundaries for specified annual recording period.
9. User is an organization that uses the RE-Mark label for companies and organization under RE-
Mark Labeling program.
10. Recording Boundaries is selected by user to record its electricity consumption for specified
period. It can be organizational basis or geographical basis.
2. Objective
The objectives of RE-Mark label for Companies & Organization are to:
1. Provide a credible and transparent methodology for quantifying and reporting electricity sourced
from Renewable Energy sources as a share of User’s total electricity consumption in a specified
period.
2. Provide a communication platform for companies and organization to report their use of electricity
generated from renewable energy sources, while maintaining transparency in the use of RE-Mark
label.
3. Empowering consumers with easy to interpret labels indicating the source and share of electricity
consumption generated by Renewable Energy sources.
3. Options for Sourcing Renewable Energy
Renewable Electricity as part of total electricity consumption to be eligible for RE-Mark label shall be
procured as follow:
1. Own Power Generation Facility – User may procure renewable energy from a renewable
energy power generation facility in which the user owns equity. Hence, utilizing the renewable
power plant as captive power plant, user will only be liable to report for the generation he is
self-consuming and not for third party sale.
2. Power Purchase Agreement – User may procure renewable energy through a contract with the
owner of the renewable energy power generation facility. User will only be liable to report the
electricity generated by power plant in a specified recording period.
3. Renewable Energy Certificates – User may purchase Renewable Energy Certificates from Power
Exchanges equivalent to share of renewable electricity an organization wants to procure for a
specified year. (1 REC is equal to 1 MWh)
4. Recording Boundaries
User may choose to avail RE- Mark label using either organizational basis or a geographical basis.
The options allow user to either apply the label to an entire group of business units (If different brands)
or geographical locations.
1. Organizational Basis – An organization may have different legal entities, business units, brands,
services etc. Organizational basis allows organization to choose to report electricity consumption
based on these boundaries.
2. Geographical Basis – A geographical location can be clearly identified and demarcated as
separate from the rest of the organization. It allows organization to report electrical consumption
as per geographical boundaries.
5. Annual Reporting Period
The electricity consumption should be reported over a 12 month period. A user may qualify based on
an initial Annual Reporting Period of less than 12 months but no less than three months if user can
highlight renewable procurement in the reporting period.
6. Calculation Methods
The percentages per renewable source shall be calculated as the amount of electricity obtained from a
Renewable Energy Source as a share of the Electricity consumption for a specific boundary and annual
reporting period. As expressed in this equation:
REp
where ∑ ∑
REp Renewable energy procurement (in Percentage) that will be specified on label
Rg Renewable energy procurement from own generation (MWh)
Rp Renewable energy procurement from various PPA (MWh)
Rc Renewable energy procurement in the form of Renewable Energy Certificates (MWh)
EC Electricity Consumption as per specified boundaries and period (MWh)
t Start Date
m Number of months as per specified period
i Reporting entity (No. of Products/No. of Manufacturing Facilities etc.)

IPS team is active on LinkedIn and Facebook with more than 2000+ members in total with power sector
profiles. It gives a 360 degrees overview of the Indian Power Market.
Methodology
IndianPowerSector.com being online information and analytics organization, hence the recording
boundary was specified in terms of electricity consumption from visitor’s perspective and also from
developer’s perspective. We have utilized the visitor data or traffic on IndianPowerSector.com for the
year 2012-13 to assess the electricity consumption from visitor’s perspective and similarly assess the
electricity consumption by developers based on sample data regarding electricity consumption
collected from their premises.
Step 1: Data related to traffic on IndianPowerSector.com has been collected and analyzed for the
year 2012-13 and recording boundary was designed in a manner to access the electricity consumption
from visitor’s perspective and also from developer’s perspective
Step 2: Data was collated regarding number of visitors on IndianPowerSector.com in 2012-13 and
detailed estimations have been made regarding average time each user spends on site to access the
system usage by visitors in terms of hours
Step 3: It was assumed that all the users access IndianPowerSector.com using 100 Watt laptops only
(Average of Various Laptops Available in Market)1
Step 4: Electricity usage from visitor’s perspective is calculated and similarly based on sample data
collected electricity consumption from developer’s perspective is calculated to estimate the combined
electricity consumption of IndianPowerSector.com
Step 5: IndianPowerSector.com directors suggested that they wanted to procure renewable energy in
the form of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), therefore RE-Mark on behalf of
IndianPowerSector.com purchased non-solar RECs on Power Exchange of Indian Limited platform via
their member Knowledge Infrastructure Systems Pvt. Ltd.
Step 6: Based on the electricity consumption of IndianPowerSector.com in the 2012-13, we projected
the electricity consumption in 2013-14 (Annual Accounting Period), based on the projected figure we
procured Renewable Energy Certificates and provide RE-Mark label to IndianPowerSector.com, which
is valid till 31st March 2014.
