Re-Imagine Education

Content Process Suggestions Time MaterialsIntroduction Overview

Staff member/team to provide an overview and the intent of the initiative.

If interested, here is an intro script:

Re-Imagine Education is an initiative that will clarify the issues facing education today, imagine what the future might look like and plan how to make the vision a reality. It is a mammoth undertaking that will gather input from teachers, students and a wide variety of community groups in our province.

Today you will be engaged in a process that will gather teacher voice. The process is intended to stimulate conversation and dialogue amongst teachers for a re-imagined future for public education in Saskatchewan.

The data will be collected and a final report will be presented to the government with the hopes it will help shape the future of education in Saskatchewan.

Intro script is provided, if interested 2 mins Script

(Optional) Discussion Guide – Skim and Scan (only if printed copies are provided to staff)

Have participants skim and scan the discussion guide (not do a detailed read yet) – make note of any wonders or questions they might have at first glance on a sticky note for later.

Hold these questions until the end 2 mins Discussion guide

Getting Started

Video Response

During the video, we invite you to think about the following question: What opportunities are you envisioning through the Re-Imagine Education initiative?

*Play the video of Patrick

Give two to three minutes for participants to answer their questions before moving to a table discussion.

15 mins Video

Core Beliefs and Values

Include on a slide – “Pamela Osmond-Johnson quote”

Thinking of the quote behind me, and the influence we can have in upcoming elections, public policy and advocacy and investment for public education in the upcoming year(s), take a minute to think about your core beliefs as a teaching professional and about the purpose of education.

Content Process Suggestions Time MaterialsListening and Learning

Individual Brainstorm

Using one idea per sticky note (on an index card or scrap paper), answer: What are your core beliefs about the PURPOSE of education?

Generate as many beliefs as you can think of.

As a table group, share your beliefs and come to consensus on your top three – feel welcome to rephrase or synthesize your table ideas as you choose your top 3, but only one big idea/belief per sticky note.

Pass your top three ideas forward to be collected. Invite 3 or 4 tables to share their favourites with the room.

Listening and Learning

Re-Imagine

Imagine we had the opportunity to build a system that would meet those core beliefs in partnership with all education stakeholders. From your seat as a teacher, grounded in your core beliefs and values, what changes, reforms, adaptations, etc. would you advocate for in the future?

• For student learning?• For the profession?• For school and community relationships?• For sector supports, structures and resources?

Give participants a few minutes to think and write ideas or talk with elbow partners before moving to small group sharing.

As a table/small group, assign one person or partners to be responsible for the public recording of ideas for each chart stand. Discuss all four areas collaboratively, and when the table feels satisfied that they have fully explored all four areas, the recorders can share the work of recording.

The recommendations and big ideas from this work will be themed and collated and brought back to teachers in the spring.

Listen for asks, if they are too specific you might ask:

What small or large change to the system or policy might allow for that to happen?

What might best ensure that all teachers/students who have similar needs to you are met?

Chart papers with the 4 titles on them – one set of 4 per ~20 staff members

Leading Together

Paper Airplane

Thinking of what you have heard today, and the ideas generated by your colleagues, please fill out a paper airplane.

“As I Re-Imagine education for Saskatchewan, I hope that…”

Encourage those who are willing to share their re-imagination on social media – they may take a photo or simply send out their message.

Questions If there are unanswered questions from the beginning of the facilitation, help participants identify who might best answer their question – is it a general wonder that should be passed forward to the Re-Imagine team? Something they would like a direct contact on? If the latter, record their question, full name, email and/or phone number and insert it in the postage-paid return envelope to the Federation.
