October 2019 Dear Parent/Carer Re: Film Studies Letter of Consent As you are aware your son / daughter has opted for Film Studies GCSE this year. We are excited to welcome them to our new course. In order to follow the exam board (Eduqas) specification it will be necessary for students to examine both film extracts and entire films. These will range from the silent years to the present day and take in many types and languages. Some of these films have been certified 15 by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). In order to sufficiently deliver this subject it is essential for students to experience and refer to a range of examples and stimuli including films and documentaries certified ‘15’. All study films have been carefully chosen by Eduqas. You should note that is legally acceptable to judiciously and responsibly screen 15 certified films to students under 15 years of age, but only during supervised, formal classes or screenings (not for ‘entertainment purposes’ such as end-of-year activities). Despite this, we find it prudent to request your consent to screen these films in these circumstances and settings in order to allow your child to access the course successfully. The full list of films that we will be studying over the 2 year course can be found below, however please be aware that we will occasionally be watching scenes and sections of other films for comparison. Please be advised that we will not be screening any 18 certificate films for GCSE Film Studies. Please sign and return the attached page (retain this page for your records). Please be aware that should you not wish your child to view any 15-certificate films (or any of the films listed overleaf) it may not be advisable for her / him to continue with this particular course. As you will appreciate, in-class film screenings take up a lot of valuable teaching and learning time. Indeed, if we were to show all the key study films during timetabled classes, this would amount to the equivalent of six weeks of lessons! Due to scheduling issues we have already screened one of the set films in lessons, which has taken away from valuable lesson time for three periods. With this in mind we have decided to have full screenings of future films after school on a Thursday. Please be aware this will be very infrequent, and will start at 2pm, normally finishing at 4-430pm. The next full film screening will not be until January 2020 and I will be in touch once we have a scheduled date for this, as well as with further dates for screenings. Research shows that students’ engagement, understanding, and recall of study films is hugely improved by watching them as a group. Not only is the setting generally more appropriate for focusing attention, but students are also able to ask questions and make their own observations. Furthermore, it is essential that Film teachers are satisfied that every student has adequately seen (i.e. in an appropriate atmosphere) all films before they are introduced into lessons. Students who miss out on seeing set films are far more likely to underachieve. Of course, we understand that circumstances can prevent attendance from time to time. We are happy to support students when there is a genuine reason that they cannot attend a screening. In these cases, I would ask you to contact me by email as far in advance as possible. I can then make temporary alternative arrangements. Otherwise, we would really appreciate your support in supporting your child to achieve their potential. Should you have any queries please feel free to email me: [email protected] Yours sincerely Mr J Salzman Maths/Film Studies Teacher/Head of Year 10
