H Research Edition. ISSN 2532-5612. Publication 2017-18,01 Division edition Group HTNET www.htnetEdition.eu Scopo fondamentale Gli studi Universitari.

INTRODUCTION

Guides to Records Microfilmed at Alexandria, VA, constitute a series of finding aids to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) microfilm publications of seized records of German central, regional, and local government agencies and of military commands and units, as well as of the Nazi Party, its component formations, affiliated associations and supervised organizations. These records were created generally during the period 1920-1945.

The guide series was initiated as a microfilming project of the Committee for the Study of War Documents of the American Historical Association (AHA) in cooperation with the National Archives and the Department of the Army. With the termination of AHA participation in July 1963, the National Archives assumed sole responsibility for the reproduction of records and the preparation of guides.

Guide No. 88 describes records reproduced on 138 rolls of NARA Microfilm Publication T83 (rolls 111-248) and on 13 rolls of NARA Microfilm Publication T253 (rolls 34-45 and 62.) Included in the T83 portion of the guide are descriptions of records of the following private enterprises: Dresdner Bank, Hermann Goering Werke Linz; I. G. Farben; Allgemeiner Deutscher Gewerkschafts Bund; and the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands. Additional related records of the Dresdner Bank, Herman Goering Werke, and I.G. Farben are described in Guide No. 23, Records of Private Austrian, Dutch, and German Enterprises, 1917-1946. The T253 records described in this guide consist of records of Dr. Theo Morell, Hitler's personal physician. Additional Morell records are described in Guide No. 9, Records of Private German Individuals.

Records of the Dresdner Bank described in Guide No. 88 and found on rolls 111-225, cover the years 1930-1945 and include correspondence, minutes of meetings of directors and reports of banking transactions with branches of the Dresdner Bank and German and foreign banks and firms. Also included (roD. 213) are records of business transactions with the SS Deutsche Wirtschaftsbetriebe (DWB) concerning products produced at the Ravensbrueck Concentration Camp. Records of the DWB, consisting of 37 rolls, are described in Guide No. 83.

Records of Hermann Goering Werke Linz, found on rolls 226-228~ cover the years 1924-1945 and include correspondence, production m~d administrative reports, work orders and employment statistics. Among the latter is information on the use of German and foreign workers, including prisoners of war and inmates at Mauthausen Concentration Camp.

Records of I.G. Farben found on rolls 229-232 and covering the years 1937- 1944, consist ef pamphlets published by the Volkswirtschaftliche Abteilung of I.G. Farben. These describe the general economic situation and industrial production of Czechoslovakia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Lebanon, Poland, Rurrmnia, Spain, Sweden, Syria, Yugoslavia, and the U.S.S.R. Also included on roil 232 are reports of interrogations by I.G. Farben chemical experts of Russian deserters who were chemists, engineers and mechanics.

Records of the Allgemeiner Deutscher Gewerkschafts Bund, found on rolls 233- 243 and covering the years 1922-1933, include correspondence, reports and published material concerning German labor unions, trade schools and social welfare organizations.

Records of the Sozialdemokratischen Partei Deutschlands, rolls 244-248, cover the years 1935-1940 and include incomplete series of party publications and monthly reports published in Prague, Czechoslovakia and Paris, France.

Rolls 34-45 and 62 of T253 contain the papers of Dr. Theo Morell. Most of the documentation deals with Morell's medical practice and business concerns. The latter include interests in the firms Hamma GmbH in Hamburg, Kosoluper Farbenfabriken in the Sude~enland, the Milo Werke in Olmuetz, and various plants in German-occupied areas of the Soviet Union. On rolls 34-45, references to Hitler are few and widely scattered; medical records filmed on roll 62 include documentation on examinations of Hitler by Morell and other doctors.

The original records described here were returned after filming to the Federal Republic of Germany and deposited at the Bundesarchiv in Koblenz. The master negatives of Microfilm Publications T83 and T253 have been retained by the National Archives, and copies of specific rolls may be purchased from the Publication Sales Branch, National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, DC 20408. Reference copies may be consulted in the Microfilm Reading Room of the National Archives. For suggestions for citing microfilm, see page xxii; for instructions for ordering microfilm, see page xxv.

The original descriptions for microfilming were prepared by George Wagner and revised for this guide by Amy Schmidt.

The microfilm publications in this record group are listed below according to the place where the filming was done. The original paper records have been returned to the country of origin. War crimes trials records for Germany also were collected or generated by the U.S. 3d and 7th Armies initially, then by spedal war crimes sections of the Judge Advocate General (JAG), Europe. Because these sections sent reports and other materials to Washington, some of the same material is in RG 53, Records of the Judge Advocate General (Army), and has proven to be a useful source for f ~flling in gaps discovered in the RG 338 records. While materials from RG 53 are frequently found in the microfilmed publications listed below, the great bulk of the records filmed come from RG 338 in each case.

RG 338 also includes the "Foreign Military Studies" manuscripts prepared by former German officers for the Historical Division of the U.S. Army, Europe.

SUGGESTIONS FOR CITING MICROFILM OF CAPTURED GERMAN AND RELATED RECORDS IN THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF THE UNITED STATES

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is frequently asked to provide recommendations regarding information to be included in footnotes and other references to records among its holdings. The following suggestions should serve this purpose and also help our staff in locating the records thus cited.

Records Because of the great variety and complexity of some archival material, there are no convenient models that would be applicable to all records. The initial citation, however, might consist of those of the following elements applicable in each instance: item, file unit or subseries, series title, originating office (and the administrative units of which that office is a part), name of collection or record group number and title, and depository. Except for placing the cited item first, there is no general agreement on the sequence of the remaining elements in the citation. Publishers, professional journals, and graduate faculties all prescribe their own style. Whatever sequence is adopted, however, should be used consistently throughout the same work. If in doubt, the researcher should confer with an archivist regarding elements that may be necessary to identify adequately specific records being cited.

Microfiln.a Publications Citation to records reproduced in National Archives microfilm publications should provide, in general, the same information as suggested above, but with sufficient additional information to identify the particular microfilm publication as well as roll and frame numbers, if applicable.

Microfilm pubhcations of foreign records seized during World War II involve such peculiarities of identification that largely individualized suggested systems of citation have been developed for them. The following examples suggest both a form of initial citation and of subsequent citations of the same document for each of five major microfilm projects reproducing captured German and related records; the form for the bibliography, which is not illustrated below, could be some appropriate modification of the initial ~itation, but should also include the National Archives record group title and number, and the title and number of the microfilm publication, e.g., National Archives Collection of World War H War Crimes Records (Nuernberg), Record Group 238, U.S.v. Otto Ohlendorf, et al., Microfilm Publication M895, 38 rolls; National Archives Collection of Foreign Records Seized 1941-, Record Group 242, Records of the Reich Ministry of Economics, Microfilm Publication T71, 148 rolls.

The serial number is the essential identification, whether the serial is of t h e interchangeable unlettered or H serials, or of the B,C,F,K,L, and M serials. The terms reel, container or roll are acceptable variations, with the last preferred by the National Archives. With the Tripartite Project microfilm, National Archives Microfilm Publication T120, it is imperative to distinguish between serial and roll numbers, and the Catalog of Files and Microfilm of the German Foreign Ministry Archives, 1920-1945, 4 vols., has as a supplement to each volume, a National Archives serial-roll conversion list. The Public Record Office in London uses the same serial and frame numbers, although not always the same roll numbers, and the microfilm publication symbols GFM 2-5 instead of T120, to identify the Tripartite Project microfilm. The other Whaddon Hall microfilm projects use the same number for serial and roll, as the SA (Saint Antony's College project) serial example, given above, indicates; the National Archives has substituted microfilm publication number for project symbols.
