Our Care Quality Commission ratings were issued in June and we have maintained our rating of ‘Good.’ The Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors visited RDaSH earlier this year. To maintain our ‘Good’ rating is a fantastic achievement. July 2018Rotherham edition

Welcome...to the latest edition of the Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH)

GP Newsletter. We hope this month’s edition will be interesting for you and your practice colleagues.

Our Care Quality Commission ratings were issued in June and we have maintained our rating of ‘Good.’

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors visited RDaSH earlier this year. To maintain our ‘Good’ rating is a fantastic achievement. You can read our report here: http://www.cqc.org.uk/provider/RXE

Of the five ratings which are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led, we achieved ‘Good’ in four of the five, with the safe rating slipping to ‘Requires Improvement.’ This gives us the overall rating of ‘Good.’

The inspectors visited four mental health services, one community health service and three adult social care locations.

The inspectors highlighted many areas of outstanding and good practice. These include:

• The leadership and guidance provided by the Trust following child sexual exploitation issues in the area was exemplary.

• Engagement with the deaf community had led to a range of improvements for deaf patients, including staff can learn sign language to communicate better.

• 88 Travis Gardens, an adult social care facility in Doncaster was rated as outstanding in the caring domain.

• Three adult social care locations and 12 core services were rated as good for caring.

• The Trust working with the Prince’s Trust to develop apprenticeship opportunities for young people from disadvantaged communities.

• The Trust has an excellent staff, patient and public engagement strategy.

• People have access to the right care at the right time.

• Staff encourage and support patients to live healthier lives through the promotion of healthy eating, exercise and reducing consumption of caffeine and smoking.

• Patients have up-to-date and comprehensive care plans.

• Patients have access to recovery colleges and social prescribing.

• Wards and services have the necessary equipment to meet the needs of patients.

The safe rating slipped for a number of reasons which included:

• Staff in some wards and teams were not up-to-date with mandatory training.

• Not all staff had received an up-to-date appraisal of their performance.

• Nurse call alarm systems were not in place in all of the bedrooms on the Doncaster wards visited.

• Seclusion facilities had clocks which weren’t visible to patients.

• Staff did not always follow the Trust’s lone working procedures.

An action plan in already in place to rectify the areas highlighted.

The Board of Directors fully welcome this report and thank the inspectors for their perspective on our services. We have also already thanked our staff for their hard work which has helped us to achieve this rating. Our staff always keep our patients and carers at the heart of everything they do.

We know that we still have areas that our Trust needs to improve and staff are already working hard to make this happen. Our managers will continue to support our staff to enhance the services we offer

If you have any questions about this rating, please don’t hesitate to contact me by emailing [email protected]

Perinatal Mental Health update

We are working closely with Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust following a successful NHS England bid to develop local perinatal services with the ability to utilise specialist resource across the South Yorkshire services.

A group designed to support the mental health and wellbeing of new and expectant mums in Rotherham has been set up by Home Start and this Trust.

The Perinatal Mental Health Support Group provides advice and a safe place for women experiencing perinatal mental health issues either during their pregnancy or in the first year after childbirth.

Rachel Maltby, Perinatal Mental Health Clinical Lead at RDaSH, said: “It is very common for women to feel unable to cope, anxious and think that they are not good enough for their baby. This group offers professional support and advice in a relaxed atmosphere to help them overcome these feelings.”

Postnatal depression affects around 15 in every hundred new mothers. It is a serious illness that can have a big impact on both the mum and also on the long term emotional development of the child.

Rachel added: “This group for anyone whether they are pregnant, just had a baby or a worried friend or family member. Together with Home Start we are here to help and offer support.”

The Perinatal Mental Health Support Group meets every Thursday between 10am and 12noon at the Maltby Stepping Stones Children’s Centre, Tickhill Road, Rotherham, S66 7NQ.

If you are interested in attending or know someone else who might please ring 01709 447070 or email [email protected]

Care Coordination Centre takes Learning Disability referrals

We have been working closely with the Care Coordination Centre (CCC) at the Rotherham Hospital.

From April this year, we have been accepting learning disability referrals through this route as part of a plan to enable all mental health and learning disability calls to be routed through the CCC this year. Mental health out of hours calls will be via the CCC in July. So far this has worked well with Learning disability calls being routed through to the service when appropriate.

To make referrals to the CCC please telephone 01709 426600 or fax 01709 427534.

For more information contact Sally Blackett, Team Manager, on 01709 302670.

Working together with the Samaritans

The helpline is a pathway for hospital liaison and crisis staff to provide contact details for people in distress and the Samaritans will offer telephone support/ engagement.

Our Crisis Team telephone:01709 302670 available 24/7

Rotherham Samaritans:01709 361717

A leaflet has been produced which is available via this link https://bit.ly/2ziX38S

We are expanding the Hospital liaison service and plan to offer 24/7 services by September this year.

This will include mental health and alcohol liaison advice to people in the Emergency Department and on hospital

wards. We are also pleased to announce additional support from psychology into the service as it expands.

Rotherham Together Partnership

We have joined with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, Rotherham Clinical Commissioning Group, The Rotherham Foundation Trust and the voluntary sector to promote the Five Ways to Wellbeing campaign in Rotherham.

This campaign is about getting people of all ages to look after their mental health. It is about accessing things which are around them so does not need to cost money.

A film has been produced to launch the campaign and we encourage you to view it at www.rotherham.gov.uk/health.

There is a range of resources available, including a toolkit and presentation which are available on the Council’s website www.rotherham.gov.uk/health.
