Goals and Objectives for

Recreation and Leisure Services Goal #1: Maintain NRPA/AALR National Accreditation.

Objectives: • Continue to address curricular and student needs in scheduled faculty meetings. • Submit the program manual and arrange for visitors every five years. • Attend national meetings to fulfill accreditation requirements.

This goal has been met; RCLS continues to enjoy accreditation status. Goal #2: Organize a Student Advisory Board.

Objectives: • Select student representatives from each option in the Fall of 2001 to hold membership

for one year on a board. • Require attendance at feedback sessions dealing with several department, student,

personnel, and curricular issues. This goal was met in 2001 – we sti l l have a very active SAB (with documentation) Goal #3: Implement an Alumni Advisory Board.

Objectives: • Invite 8-10 EWU alumni from the three options in the Fall of 2001 to hold membership

for one year on a board. • Host a fall and spring gathering of these alumni to discuss several department, student,

personnel, and curricular issues. This goal has been sporadic. We’ve used the WRPA conference for this function in the past. We have also organized meetings on campus from time to time. Our intention is to better uti l ize the careers class in September for this purpose. It is not unusual for 6-8 alums to agree to come to campus in order to guest speak in this class. Next year we wil l organize a lunch meeting and implement board activities with the group. Goal #4: Add a challenge course on campus. This goal was met in 2007. Since then we have also implemented a certif icate and academic minor in Challenge Course Management and Leadership.

Page 24: RCLS Meeting Minutes · PEHR Conference Room In attendance: Barb Brock, Chris Cindric, Emily Messina, Paul Green, Matt Chase, Penny Rose Guests: Luke Parsons, Lance Plank Graduate

24

Goal #5: Look at the feasibility of a few on-line courses. This goal has not been met due to a lack of resources and personnel. Our intention is to begin building on-l ine classes during the summer of 2014. We would l ike to see several of the core classes developed for on-l ine purposes, as well as graduate level courses. Goal #6: Complete a climbing wall along the wall of the indoor track. This goal is no longer needed or applicable. A new University Recreation Center now houses a state of the art indoor cl imbing facil ity. Goal #7: Develop a Northwest River Safety Information Center to supply information to leaders

and paddlers about river safety. This goal was reframed in the form of a social media site that provides river safety information to stand-up paddlers in the community and region.

Goal #8: Implement more certification programs for hard skills and career development across

all three options. This goal has been met with a certif icate in Challenge Course Management and Leadership, as well as certif ications in ACA Whitewater Kayaking and Stand-up Paddle Board instruction.

Goal #9: Offer more weekend and/or spring break workshops for credit.Thisgoalhasbeenmetwithavarietyofclasses:RCLS496(SimplePleasures),RCLS465(TravelandTourism),RCLS330(IntermediateWhitewaterKayaking),andRCLS353(AdvancedTechnicalSkills).

New Long Range Plans for Recreation and Leisure Services

Develop an on-line or hybrid Masters Degree in Leisure Studies:

• Secure an additional faculty line for this function, along with teaching responsibilities in either Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation Management

Outdoor Recreation:

• Conduct a thorough curriculum review (As part of a Masters Degree project) • Evaluate changes in structure with the following potential options:

a. Develop a minor and certificate program in Outdoor Leadership b. Develop a new major in Adventure Tourism c. Develop a new major in Natural Resources and Recreation Management

• Initiate and complete a search process for a new faculty member in this area (AY 2014 – 2015)

Page 25: RCLS Meeting Minutes · PEHR Conference Room In attendance: Barb Brock, Chris Cindric, Emily Messina, Paul Green, Matt Chase, Penny Rose Guests: Luke Parsons, Lance Plank Graduate

25

Therapeutic Recreation:

• Avoid take-over by Occupational Therapy • Hire a new TT line in Therapeutic Recreation (growing program with 55 majors)

Recreation Management:

• Change name to Recreation and Tourism Management • Drop RCLS 260 (Arts in RCLS) from the required supplemental curriculum • Add a course to the accredited core - Diversity and RCLS • Add a course to the required supplemental curriculum: Foundations of Travel and

Tourism • Make RCLS 340 (Aquatics) optional (for students pursuing the aquatics minor) • Completely overhaul RCLS 349 (Intramurals) to reflect a more modern youth

sport management emphasis – pursue consistent teaching with this class RCLS Minors:

• Drop the generic RCLS minor • Maintain the certificate in Challenge Course Management and Leadership • Potentially rework the current minor in Challenge Course Management and

Leadership into a minor in Group Facilitation and Experiential Education • Keep the Aquatics Minor • Add a minor in Travel and Tourism (up to three new classes)

a. Global Citizenship and International Tourism b. Principles of Sustainable Tourism c. Seminar in Tourism Management

Paul’s retirement bash will take place at the Chase residence on June 13, 2015 (following graduation on campus). Times to be announced. All Google docs data must be loaded onto the system and ready to go by June 22, 2015. Jeremy will receive five credits this summer in order to begin work on the self-study. Student of the year for RM is Will Easland Francis B. Huston Award winner for PEHR: Heather Summers Note: the following is essentially a recap of the discussion and agreements we came to regarding the RCLS overall schedule for the 15 -16 AY. There are a few assumptions at play that I will highlight at the start:

- For the moment, Callie is not a part of the schedule - Emily will be moving into the PD role, based on some necessary changes that

are highlighted below. - We are dropping the survival class from JJ’s schedule (RCLS 315). - We are dropping RCLS 465 (Seminar in Travel and Tourism) for one year. - We are moving toward eliminating RCLS 340 and replacing it with a

certification requirement (APO or CPO). - We are moving to one section of Senior Capstone for winter 2016 (noon –

12:50pm). We will need an additional classroom for break-out sessions and readings.

- We are adding RCLS 462: Foundations of Travel and Tourism to the RTM curriculum, beginning fall 2015

Next: a review of each individual and any changes made to his or her schedule. With the exception of JJ, I have not included classes that remain the same. Emily: Fall 2015: Emily will take over the careers class for two credits - Jeremy S. will be dropped (fall quarter 2015). Emily will officially take over the PD role for RCLS, beginning fall quarter 2015 (with release time). The transition to PD is based on an understanding that writing the self-study will become a team effort between Emily, Jeremy, Matt, and Susan. Spring 2016: Emily will not teach RCLS 425 in spring of 2016. Jeremy Schultz: Fall 2015: Jeremy will not teach RCLS 435 in fall quarter 2015. Jeremy will become the instructor of record for RCLS 270: Diversity in RCLS, effective fall quarter 2015. Jeremy will begin teaching RCLS 462: Foundations of Travel and Tourism, effective fall quarter 2015 (we need a class time and location for this course).

Winter 2016: Jeremy will not teach RCLS 385: Programming (winter quarter 2016). Jeremy will not teach RCLS 465: Seminar in Travel and Tourism for one year (winter 2016). Matt: Fall 2015: Matt will teach RCLS 470 and RCLS 220 in the fall (unless Callie decides to teach 220 at a later date). Winter 2016: Matt will co-teach one section of RCLS 490: Senior Capstone – with Jeremy Jostad. We will teach one large section at noon, with an additional room for breakout sessions. Matt will not teach RCLS 465: Travel and Tourism, for one year. Spring 2016: Matt will not teach the spring section of RCLS 470. Matt will teach RCLS 425: Evaluation at 9am (changed from 8am). Emily will not teach RCLS 425, so she can take over program director duties in fall 2015. Jeremy Jostad: Fall 2015: RCLS 230: Whitewater Kayaking (co-taught with Dustin, (1) credit each) RCLS 206: Wilderness Backpacking (3 credits) RCLS 325: Outdoor Adventure Programming (3 credits) RCLS 410: Outdoor Leadership (4 credits) Winter 2016: RCLS 305: Winter Camping (3 credits) RCLS 385: Programming in RCLS (3 credits) RCLS 400: Legal (4 credits) RCLS 490: Senior Capstone (2 credits: co-taught with Matt) RCLS 310: Outdoor Recreation? Will Chris keep this? Not discussed.**** Spring 2016: RCLS 325: Outdoor Adventure Programming (3 credits) RCLS 307: Mountaineering (3 credits) RCLS 125: Whitewater Rafting (1 credit) RCLS 375: Intermediate WW Rafting (3 credits) Chris: is generally not affected, however, we did not discuss RCLS 310: Outdoor Recreation and whether or not this class should go back to JJ (if we did, I do not remember and I have nothing in my notes). Currently, we have JJ at 12 credits in the winter quarter, so it makes sense for Chris to keep this class in his schedule. This may become a discussion point once JJ is in the mix, however, for next year I suggest we leave Chris as the instructor of record.
