SINGLE STORY RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION

Spotts, Savannah, Grand Cayman

Project Description:

The Client’s request was to have a structure that would define them

based on aesthetics and layout. Based on our knowledge of the client, a

grand kitchen area was designed with visual access in most directions. As well as a grand entrance to not only the structure as presented in 3D but also to the clients main

sleeping quarters.

The 3D visual was one of few proposals. All construction documents were developed by

myself and an associate. We worked collaboratively to develop all construction

documents such as structural, architectural, plumbing and electrical.

GUN BAY PORT COMMUNITY (COLLABORATIVE PROJECT)Winter 2013

Architectural Senior Thesis10 Weeks

East End, Grand Cayman

Project Description:

As cruise line visitors to the Cayman Islands decline, the world recession isjust affecting the Islands. Tourism being one of two of the major sourcesof revenue on island, this creates a serious deficit in the islands resources.

Therefore, a supportive community was designed to assist with the financial growth of the Island. The community should appeal and accommodate visitors

as well as local.

The most important factor is to accommodate a Cruise Berth Facility. This will attract recent Cruise Lines that have refused to stop in the Cayman

Islands due to the lack of proper berthing facility for the cruise ships.

Geological studies were carried out on the Grand Cayman Island, to identify the idealistic location for the community. Nautical maps were studied to locate the best area of the cruise berthing facilitywith the least most possible disturbance to the natural surroundingsof the ocean floor.

With all of these studies, the iconic location would be that of Gun Bay, in the East End district. This location selected has an existing channel wide and deep enough to house the largest cruise ship as well as yards of turning, space.

THE WATERSIDE CONDOS (COLLABORATIVE PROJECT)Spring 2012

Site Engineering & Planning10 Weeks

East Providence, RI

Project Description:

This was a team project with another classmate.Provided with a site on the riverside, the task of

carrying out a thorough analysis for soil conditions and further factors, skills were defined to locate the ideal location to layout the site and structure

was learnt.

This assignment was my introduction to site engineering.Learning to identify the general criteria for assessing

land use alternatives such as the Physical Factors, Legal and Political Factors, and the Off-site Factors.

Active analysis such as cut and fill calculations to efficiently establish an appropriate stormwater runoff.

This can be verified by the stormwater runoff calculations. Another active analysis conducted was traffic data.

With this analysis it allowed for selection of the best site access and other factors, with the calculations of average

daily traffic (ADT) and peak hour volume (PHV).

All of these exercises and analysis allowed for an accurate master site planning.

COMMERCIAL HEIGHTS DESIGNSpring 2010

Building Design II10 Weeks

USA

Project Description:

Presented with a commercial building plan of 24,522 square feet and predetermined column structure. This broke ground for

my understanding not only commercial construction but also steel frame

construction.

The obligation was to create an interior code compliant layout. Using the study of

circulation, vertical transportation and design. A complete set of architectural and

structural drawings based on the building code and ADA were established.

The level of achievement was to learn the commercial building systems from

foundaton to core and core to roofing system, as well as a knowledge for

building code.

CHELSEA TOWERFall 2012

Highrise Design10 Weeks

Chelsea, New York, USA

Project Description:

Exploring the relationship between architectural design, engineering and technology relative to high rise construction.

Compile historical research on the Chelsea area, and Chelsea highline. Conclude a site, building program and development,

and structural system analysis.

Develop a design solution or construction management data for a specific program. Some of the requirements were to

design a mixed use, commercial and residential highrisestructure that house 150 living units, appropriate parking garage, commercial stores, and access to the highline.

~ Autodesk Revit~ 3DS Max

CHELSEA TOWER

On the left, a 3D West perspective. Visible is the Highline

and rear facade of the structure.

There is the innovative exterior panel the facade engaged with

exterior lighting. This brings additional life to the Highline with the glowing feature of the floor grates, 10th Ave viewing area, the

grassline, and other intrigingfeatures on and around the Highline.

The top right, an image of the resident lobby. It faces the

Highline. Here the use of multiple materials are present. The

collaboration of these materials flow together on the basis of color and differential texture.

The image in the middle shows the interior garden area. This allows for a place of comfort

away from your apartment and the busy Highline.

The floor plans viewed below are of a typical residential floor layout.

ITHACA COLLEGE SCIENCE DEPARTMENTSummer 2012

Lowrise Design10 Weeks

Ithaca, New York, USA

Project Description:

A modern state-of-the-art architectural school structure that used steel creatively, a successful response of the design to its surrounding context,

a successful response to basic architectural concepts such as, human activity needs, structural integrity, and coherence of architectural vocabulary.

Demonstrating the architectural construction methods and materials. Display structural technology and architectural detailing. Design an innovative facility

for maximum efficiency, adaptability and durability for both short and long terms.

Incorporate sustainability to the Platinum Certification criteria of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (L.E.E.D.).

ITHACA COLLEGE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

The North facade gains the least sun activity of all the locations. The NW view, provides a view of the loading dockand connecting bridge to the existing adjacent building. Also

visible are the commercial shades to shelter occupants fromthe Sun’s glare on the SW facade.

The NE perspective, provides a view of the outdoor lab areaand the main entrance for visitors through the gallery. Thisview gains little heat therefore, the majority of steel being

used here is aesthetical, as per the building requirements.

The SE perspective provides an elegant view. The efficientuse of shades are present as the South view gains the most

heat. The use of major and minor shades here as well asthe use of structural steel elements, provide a great

aesthetical effect. The South views provide a great signature to symbolize that this is the Architectural

Department on site.

During most of the year this site is in a dark gloom. So, to reduce this factor, Designed on the South main

entrance, where the majority of students will enter,is a atmosphere of cheerfulness and Zen. This is

established through the use of a vibrant wall with colorfullights that can me set and alternated. There is also the use

of a fountain wall and varying ceiling levels and types to attractoccupants and allow them to embrace the area and brighten the mood.

STRUCTURAL WOOD DESIGN ANALYSIS AND DESIGNSpring 2012

Structural Wood Design10 Weeks

New Hampshire, USA

Project Description:

Create an appropriate analysis of the current log cabin. Here an understanding of timber construction was

established. Knowledge was gained based on the studyof column and beam designA, glue lam systems, roof systems, timber connections, its stability, and many

other factors,

The proof of understanding had to be shown withwritten proof. This later adjusted to CAD software

and the understanding of their analysis.

The study of timber relative to these categories, allowedfor understanding of timber as a structural system. In

addition to timber structural design, also educated in the structure of Concrete and Metal structures.

INDIA POINT MUSEUMWinter 2011

Building Design IV8 Weeks

Providence, RI, USA

Project Description:

The objective of this design studio was to show our creativity and understanding of a

building plan and use for a commercial museum. We were given a building plan yet

with the freedom to design our own structure and prove our thought process on

how the grid systems worked, as much as meeting our clients desires.

The expressive design of the structure is cubism. The use of interior and outdoor

spaces is maximized, and the form of each structural component is art as seen by the

visible column structure.

LEED EFFICIENT RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTIONWinter 2010

Building Design I10 Weeks

Rhode Island, USA

Project Description:

Designing an energy efficient summer home for a client.

During this study and design, Iexpanded my knowledge of efficient

components that could be used, suchas low flush toilets, and waste water

recycling systems.

Page 23: RCJackson Portfolioo

LEED EFFICIENT RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION

The construction defined is that ofStructural insulated Panels (SIP)

construction. A very efficient and environmental form of construction. I established a great understanding for this construction material. The

good and the bad was learnt.

The deficiency of the structure is but an advantage and disadvantage

in both perspectives.

STRUCTURAL EXERCISEFall 2009

Construction Methods and Materials10 Weeks

Project Description:

Design a paper bridge that will be able to span a 2 foot distance.

Along with this distance, it must be able to withstand the weight of 2 bricks. There should be structure

to the bridge. Any form ofaesthetics is a bonus.

Based on research, I presented, drafted, and designed my solution

with a piled structure and crosshatched walkways.

AutoCAD Architecture was usedto establish appropiate arch sizes

to the bridge mass.

STILL LIFE ART

Image one, Pencil Draiwing of a Tea Pitcher.Replica to the original by Helen Van Wyk.

Image two, a compilation of still life figures on display.

The main focus here is that of detail. Define the art by how much detail can be represented. Any definition is a great bonus here, as that will increase

the eyes captivity.

WILDLIFE PORTRAITS

Image one, a Water painting of a deer.

Image two, a Pencil drawing of a wolf.

Texture is the main focus when it comes to wildlife drawings, whether is be fur, scales, or skin. The texture of each needs

to be dramatized to actually understand the imagery.
