Costume

In R&B men are usually dressed in designer jeans and gold & diamond jewellery, most of the time they are shirtless to show off tattoos. Women, often show a lot of skin & make up is bold and eye catching. They wear high heels and lots of jewellery to make a statement like the men do.

Locations

Many videos tend to either: Take place in a dark room where the main focus of the video will be the

artist(s), who will be showing off to the audience. Take place on the streets of a run down area with lots of graffiti in the

background. Take place in a nightclub Take place in the artist’s home, usually a villa or mansion.

Colours

R&B tends to use black and white with very little colour. Any colour used tends to be muted or a part of the setting. Gold is a big colour used due to the fact that the artists often wear large quantities of jewellery to make a statement.

Themes

Key themes of R&B include: Money Relationships Crime Sexuality (particularly Women’s bodies)

Representations

Popular Representations include: Million Dollar look Gangsters Gold Diggers Drugs All of these are used to create a persona for the artist

Props

The key props used in most R&B videos are items that display an artist’s wealth. So items such as jewellery and designer clothing are popular. Also, expensive sports cars are often used as these display wealth.
