School Principal Sharon Halstead and Board Treasurer Robert Bye briefed the Council on the new After School Care Program pro-posed by the school to help provide safe care of elementary school children after school. Several par-ents are in need of a good, low cost care program for their chil-dren and the school/board were able to develop a pro-gram that meets those needs and is cost sufficient. After discussion, the Coun-cil approved the pro-gram and the school will begin implement-ing this month. This program used a business plan and ini-tiated protocols that will be used for further such proposals at Cross of Hope. The Council Protocol Group, which is meet-ing monthly now, used the plan as an example of how to set up protocols. They are also working on

protocol for purchas-ing since there will be major changes imple-mented in January under the new health care laws. Council also heard from Property Director Bob Slagle with a pro-posal from Klinger Construction to re-solve the issue of fail-ing stucco on the east side of the building. The Council voted to accept their offer and Bob will proceed with implementation. Council continues to refine vision and stra-tegic initiatives and is focusing on improving communications be-tween and among the staffs of the pre-school, school, church and the Coun-cil. Much new infor-mation is and will be posted on the website for those three units. Members, too, are encouraged: READ our website daily! You maybe surprised what you see and learn! Be a COH web-reader!

FOURTEENTH

SUNDAY after

PENTECOST

August 29, 2010

Text:

Hebrews 13:1-8

Title:

Truth Be Known/

Truth Be Told

You know how im-portant I believe welcoming visitors is. I take the words of Hebrews literally:

Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for doing that some have entertained angels unaware.

(Hebrews 13:2)

I’ve even talked about the most im-portant people on Sunday morning. Who are they?

Visitor

Nursery Care Work-ers

Ushers / hosts

Members

Person next to Visitor

Musicians

Pastor

Going to church can be challenging, to say the least. We build churches like hospi-tals: big with lots of wings to confuse the visitor. Often we don’t have very good direction signs. Peo-ple don’t know the rules. Where’s the worship area? What will worship be like? Will people notice me and help me?

On our vacation this summer we visited a church and it wasn’t Lutheran. We didn’t know what to expect. We got to the parking lot just fine and fig-ured out where the front entrance was. We saw an usher and were relieved. But when we got closer we noticed that the usher was on his cell phone, too busy to notice. Once inside, we wandered down a hallway and finally got

to the worship area. We were given a ge-neric order of service and told that the hymns would be pro-jected. They passed the peace, but it was short and perfunctory. At the end on the ser-vice, we couldn’t quite figure out what route out to take. What made it difficult to get out were the knots of people standing and talking with each other—but not us.

People come through our doors for lots of reasons. Some have moved into town and want to maintain their connection with God through worship. Some people come because something is missing in their lives. Some are looking for community to become a part of. As our Bap-tist friends tell us up the street, theirs is a “place to connect.” Some want their chil-dren to have a faith foundation. Here, at Cross of Hope, it may be their children’s education. Some simply come to wor-ship the God who re-deemed them. Lots of reasons.

It is a sacred trust that we welcome them, intentionally. It just doesn’t happen. We need to look around for someone to greet. Someone to wel-come.

Why? Because we are custodians of something they and we all need: the Truth. If someone comes to Cross of Hope, they ought to be welcomed by this community which holds in trust the Truth. And is eager to share it.

Truth. I’m not talking about a set of beliefs that degrades others. Or an ideology. Or something we alone hold. Our truth is Je-sus Christ, born, lived, died, and was raised from the dead. It is by the cross that we are connected to God and we have the promise that one day as he rose, we too will be raised. We have the truth that our God not only redeems us, but calls us to life-giving behavior. That’s what is de-scribed in Hebrews.

Remember those who are in prison … let marriage be held in honor by all … keep your lives free from the love of money … remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you … do not ne-glect to do good and share what you have.

(Hebrews 13:2-16)

The truth we have calls us to be the community of Christ, the Communion of Saints. We are not custodians of this

Truth by ourselves. We are a part of truth-filled people who have served Christ Jesus, are serving him, and shall serve Christ.

I believe we have Truth here. And we want to make sure that visitors can take hold of this Truth. We must do all we can to remove any barriers. Don’t miss any chance.

Easy to do, miss an opportunity. Some of us here this morning are task oriented. We are cooking coffee,

networking important community business, greeting those we haven’t seen for a long time, or hanging out with family who haven’t been home a lot during the week.

The greatest barrier we have, though, is that we forget what we have to offer the visitor. We have Christ, we have life, and we have each other. Truth. Wow! We forget what treas-ure it is that we have received by the grace of God. Maybe it’s not forgetting it. Maybe, deep down, we don’t believe that

we have such a treas-ure. Or maybe it is obscured by the anxi-ety and ills we strug-gle with. Or maybe it is too good to be true.

Whatever.

Claim the treasure that is yours. Really. And then button-hole someone and say, I’m glad you’re here. Have I got something for you.”

Truth Be Known

Truth Be Told

Amen.

I'm read-ing an interest-ing book right

now titled “Mistakes Were Made (but not by me).” The subtitle reads, “Why we justify foolish beliefs, bad decisions, and hurtful acts.” While the book doesn't present its' material from a Chris-tian perspective, I was struck by how easily we justify our

Mistakes Were Made (but not by me) By Patty Westerfield

wrong actions to our-selves, and to God. I suppose it is human nature to do our best to feel good about who we are and what we do, but when we carry this too far it will separate us from God, harm ourselves, and others. You see, when our view of our self is as a “basically good per-son” we ignore our sinful nature and be-

gin a journey down a very slippery slope. This tendency to overlook and dis-count our sins takes many forms. “I'm a good person because I don't do what he does.” Com-parison is one way we build ourselves up. “I may have fudged on my taxes, but that person em-bezzled money from a school”, or “Perhaps I exagger-

ated when told that story about her, but that's not like lying about steroid use be-fore a congressional committee.” Lies and half-truths have humble begin-nings. A small exag-geration to make the story we are telling better. A little lie to get us out of a sticky situation. No one's hurt as far as we can see so we continue.

“Train up a child in the way that he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

field trips to a pump-kin patch. The four year old classes will hold a Bike Day. They will ride their own bicycles in the church parking lot (with helmets!) and learn about bike safety. The three year old classes will learn about fire safety with a visit from some lo-cal firemen. In No-vember we focus on thanking God for His many blessings. Each class will host a Family Thanksgiving Dessert Gathering. Yum!

In addition to all of these wonderful ex-periences we have many other ongoing learning opportunities. An important part of our program is our Christian curriculum. Every week the chil-

dren attend chapel where they hear a Bi-ble story, learn the Lord’s Prayer and sing and dance to praise music. Pastor Dale and I take turns doing chapel with the children. The three year olds learn a color, a number, a sign language word and a Spanish word a month. Miss Janna and Miss Marie, teach a weekly Spanish class to the four year olds. Miss Janna teaches music to the three year olds once a month and the four year olds have a monthly music class with Mr. Ken from The Music Express. Miss Donna teaches sign language to all of us. We keep very busy!

We have a few open-ings in our three year

old afternoon class. If you know anyone who is interested, please have them call the preschool office at 899-0928.

We thank this congre-gation for your contin-ued support and faith-fulness to these little ones that God has entrusted into our care. We look forward to what God has in store for us this year.

Cross of Hope Pre-school is in full swing and going strong. The children are ad-justing well and so are the teachers.

The months of August and September were spent helping the chil-dren get adjusted. We also learned about farm life and apples. In chapel we learned about how “God made the world and everything in it.” (Acts 17:24).

During the fall months we focus our activities on the seasonal changes that are tak-ing place. In October we learn about God’s harvest, pumpkins and hot air balloons. Our Bible story for the month is Noah. All of the classes will take

Cross of Hope Ele-mentary School is off to a MIGHTY good start. We have experi-enced a growth rate of 28%, with student enrollment rising from 61 students this time last year to 78. We have a strong, crea-tive, and dedicated staff, all of whom share their amazing faith and love of the Lord with our students as well as their pro-fessional expertise. Above all, we have a gracious God who loves us and contin-ues to bless us with gifted hands and hearts in our teach-ers, volunteers, and families. To Him, we give all our thanks and praise!

We have five new ad-ditions to our teaching staff. They are Mrs. Amy Weig-Pickering-5th grade, Mrs. Amy McGee-1st grade, Mrs. Amy Saucer-Spanish, Mrs. Carla Rael-returns as our Kindergarten Educa-tional Assistant, and Ms. April Irwin-After-School Care Director. Mrs. Pickering has worked in both private and public school set-tings teaching grades

K-8. She also has an extensive background in Library Science and was a Children’s Li-brarian for 13 years prior to becoming a teacher.

Mrs. Amy McGee comes to us from cen-tral Texas with an ex-tensive early literacy background and many years experience teaching 1st grade.

Mrs. Amy Saucer is from Iowa. She is cer-tified in both Elemen-tary Education and Spanish and studied Spanish in both Spain and Mexico. She has taught Spanish at the Elementary and High School levels.

Mrs. Carla Rael joins us after a year’s leave to care for her sister. She is a licensed edu-cational assistant with 9 years experience. We are very happy to have her back!

And, finally, Ms. April Irwin is joining our staff, having recently graduated from UNM with a degree in Ele-mentary Education. She has graciously

helped design our Af-ter-School Care Pro-gram and looks for-ward to directing the program for us this year.

Returning teachers: Mrs. Sarah Clegern-Kindergarten, Mrs. Rosalie Hipple- 2nd grade, Mrs. Martha Montano- 3rd grade, Mrs. Elaine Pratt-4th grade, Mr. Richard Hielkema-Music, and Mrs. Judy Sachs-P.E.

Exciting things are happening! Some of them are: Cross of Hope Elementary stu-dents are receiving formal Spanish in-struction on a daily basis from our won-derful Senora Saucer. The Mighty Knights House System is now in place providing stu-dents with weekly op-portunities to meet with different aged students and their House Counselors to learn about the Fruits of the Spirit and Val-ues for Life…a Chris-tian equivalent of Character Education. A new volunteer group called Grand-parents of Hope led by Elaine Uppendahl gives us those won-

derful, multi-generational helping hands that nurture our children. The school website has become a work of art thanks to Brian Hipple who has poured many hours into the development of a visitor, parent, and teacher-friendly site. We invite you to log on and take a look! Parents of Hope now provides parent meetings in the morn-ings and evenings to accommodate both stay-home and work-ing parents. And, fi-nally, our After-School Care Program, under the direction of Ms. April Irwin, begins September 20th.

Please continue to pray for us. We ask for a special dose of prayer as we seek an alternative PE site for Fridays’ physical edu-cation classes. We experience God in so many wonderful ways through this “body” of Christian believers, all of you, who support us in prayer and ser-vice that we know this, too, will work it-self out. Thank you all for supporting us as we begin our 7th year!

SMORES E = Evangelism

The E in SMORES stands for Evangel-ism, a scary word for most Christians. So how do we share our faith with others and bring them to Christ? There are as many ways as there are people in our congre-gation. God uses our spiritual gifts, unique to each of us to help us build that bridge.

Thanks to Bonnie Davis, Jan Paris, and Pat Woldt we now have a spiritual gifts team again who can help our church use the gifts God has given us to share the gospel with others.

Our church also offers many opportunities to invite people in a nonthreatening way. There’s OktHOPEr-fest, concerts, school events, service pro-jects, Special Needs VBS, and Financial Peace University. The SMORES want to highlight events that you may use to invite folks in.

We want to highlight several events com-ing up that you can invite friends, family, and acquaintances to make connections. One is Financial Peace University of-fered every Wednes-day evening during W³. Another is our

OktHOPErfest cele-bration held October 22. And then we have a Fair Trade Fair coming up with the proceeds going to-ward Lutheran World Relief. Use these op-portunities to share the love of Jesus with your friends and fam-ily.

We’d love to have folks who have a pas-sion for ideas of events and activities to contact me—899-8221. Some ideas we’ve considered are health fairs, marriage encounters, men’s / women’s retreats, liv-ing nativity, father/son event, mother/daughter event, a se-

der. Please let us know how we can in-clude the folks who aren’t connected to a church family.

We want to follow the call Pastor Dale has given us the past few weeks in his sermons to find the lost and to remember who the most important per-son is at our services. It’s the visitor. Let’s remember, Go out into the world making disciples of all na-tions.

SMOREs—a big part of our name is Mis-sion, OutReach and Evangelism. Let’s do it.

Sadly, traveling down this path un-checked can have disastrous results. Perspective is lost as our ability to tell right from wrong be-comes clouded. A newly elected official has lunch with a lob-byist, because, after all, this lobbyist has a right to be heard. Soon they are meet-ing on a golf course because it's a pleas-

leading up to it justi-fied this wrong action in his mind. We like to categorize our sins into “big” and “small”. Not God. All our sins grieve Him. And now, perhaps, it's a little easier to see why. Accepting our sin as “small” makes it o.k. We ignore our conscience, and the Holy Spirit, when we justify what we have done. There is noth-

ing that needs to be confessed to God, no correction to be made. And then we follow it with another. The same thing hap-pens only this time it the sin is a little more serious. Someone is hurt, but we don't no-tice, or we convince ourselves they de-serve what happened to them.

ant place to talk. And, when the public cries foul when our official accepts a free trip to Scotland for another golf outing, he has no idea what he has done wrong. If you had asked him at the beginning of his career if he would have done anything like this he would have said “no”. But the choices he made

again. When we do this our character will change as well. It is harder to point the finger at someone else when we realize our own sinful na-ture. God has for-given us when we didn’t do anything to deserve it, and now we view others as he does. We will treat them with a little more love, care, and compassion. We will begin to re-flect the character of Jesus because he is now living in us and

shining more brightly. The grace we extend to others will be the grace we experienced from God. And in the process others will come to know Him through us. Isn’t that what life is all about?

It is amazing what the human mind can justify once God is out of the picture. Lying, cheating, stealing, adultery and murder are com-mitted with little thought to the hurt they bring to us and to others. When we compare ourselves to others we always come out ahead because there is always someone who has done some-thing worse than we have. But that's not what Christians are

supposed to do. The only compari-son we are to make is to Jesus. While we will never come out ahead, that's o.k. There is no way we can justify a wrong action when we compare our-selves to Jesus. You see this will lead us down the right path. Because every sin is a step away from God, we need to recognize it, confess it, and change so that we don’t commit it
