need of the hour -

• TheTanningindustryisthebackboneoftheleatherindustryandavailabilityrawhides&skinsisoneofmaincontributingfactorsforthe robustgrowthof the tanning industryinanycountry.

• In fact, India is one among the largestlivestockholdingcountriesandisbestowedwith an affluence of rawmaterials. Indiaproduces3billionsqftofleatherannuallymeeting10%ofgloballeatherdemand.

• Considering its growth potential, theleathersectorhasbeenidentifiedasoneoftheFocusSectorsundertheMakein Indiainitiative of theGovernment of India, andhasbeensetanambitiousturnovertargetof uSD 23.47 billion to be achieved by 2019-20.

• Keeping in view the Target fixed by theGovernment,itisestimatedthattheleatherindustry requires about 5 billion sq.ft ofleathertomeettheproductiondemand.

• Towards achieving the target, there is anurgent need to look out for new avenuesfrom where the raw materials such asraw hides & skins, wet blue/crust, semi-processedleathersetc.canbesourcedandimportedintoIndia.

• In fact, India’s import of raw hides/skinsand leatherhasbeen increasing fromUS$472.60 million in 2010-11 to US$ 609.59million in 2016-17, growing at a CAGR of4.33%inthelastsevenyears.

Programs for Raw Material Sourcing –

The Council has in the past organized RawMaterial Sourcing Delegations abroad. Nowfor the first time the Council is organizing aSourcingMeetinIndiabetweentheOverseasSuppliersofRawMaterialandIndianImporters&Manufacturer.

The Council has already written to andapproached the Leather Associations of USA,Brazil, Australia, Iran, Argentina, Bangladesh,Pakistan, Tunisia, Italy, Korea, Japan, China,SITA, Chambers of Leather Industries inArgentina, Germany Leather Federation,NationalFederationofLeatherandFootwear-Tunisia, New Zealand Leather and ShoeResearch Association, International Councilof Hides, Skins, Leather Traders Association,Turkey Leather Industrialist Association,ChambersofLeatherIndustryinEgypt,LeatherExport Council-Egypt, Hong Kong Hide andLeather Traders Association, ColombianAssociationof Leather,Associationof LeatherProcessingIndustry,Croatia,RomanianLeatherManufacturers Organisation, Chambers ofCommerce-Serbia.
