Najpomembnejši osnovni surovini sta apnenec in lapor. Surovino pridobivamo z miniranjem, nato jo drobimo, sušimo ter v pravilnem razmerju zmešamo. Na koncu jo fino zmeljemo, tako da nastane surovinska mešanica. Kamnolom je od tovarne oddaljen 3 kilometre, transport zdrobljenega materiala do tovarne pa poteka po rovu. Cement production begins with the extraction of raw material in Plesko quarry above Trbovlje. The most important basic raw materials are limestone and marl. The raw material is obtained by mining, it is then crushed, dried and mixed in the correct ratio. At the end it is ground to a fine powder to get a raw mix material. Za ustrezno kemijsko sestavo, ki omogoča dobro žganje in oblikovanje mineralov klinkerja v peči, je potrebno surovinski mešanici dodati različne materiale, kot so pepelnata žlindra, boksit, piritni ogorki ali železova ruda. Ustrezno pripravljena mešanica gre nato v mlin, ki jo zmelje v fino surovinsko moko. Surovinsko moko transportiramo v enega od dveh silosov homogenizacije, kjer je pripravljena za žganje. Proces žganja oz. proizvodnje klinkerja poteka v treh delih: v izmenjevalcu toplote, rotacijski peči ter v hladilcu klinkerja. V izmenjevalcu toplote se surovinska moka, preden vstopi v peč, segreje. Peč ima obliko cevi, njena nagnjenost in vrtenje pa omogočata potovanje materiala po peči proti vse večjim temperaturam na primarni strani, kjer je nameščen gorilec. Najvišja temperatura materiala v peči - 1450°C – je dosežena v coni sintranja, kjer potekajo najpomembnejše kemijske in fizikalne reakcije. Na tej stopnji znaša temperature plamena približno 2200°C. Na izstopni strani peči pada klinker v hladilec, kjer ga hitro ohladimo. Končni produkt žganja je cementni klinker v obliki temno sivih granul premera približno 3 cm. Material from the quarry is transported to the raw mill and stored in silos. For the appropriate chemical composition that allows good burning and the creation of clinker minerals in the kiln, the raw materials require additional materials such as ash, slag, bauxite, pirite and/ or iron ore. A properly prepared mixture then goes into the mill, which grinds it to a fine raw material (flour). Flour raw material is transported to one of two homogenization silos where it is ready for burning. The burning process (clinker production) consists of three parts: the heat exchanger (pre-heater tower), rotary kiln and clinker cooler. In the pre-heater tower, the raw material heats up before it enters the kiln. The kiln is in the form of a tube, its gradient and its rotation allow material in the kiln to travel to the increasing temperatures at the primary side where the burner is installed. The highest material temperature in the kiln - 1450°C - is achieved in the sintering zone where the most important chemical and physical reactions take place. At this point the flame temperature is approximately 2200°C. On the outlet side of the kiln, clinker falls into the clinker cooler, where it is cooled quickly. The end product of burning is a cement clinker in shape of dark gray granulates of approximately 3 cm diameter. The control room is located in the center of the cement plant and represents its heart, from where operators monitor and manage the entire production process from raw material transport from the quarry to the factory, raw material preparation, clinker burning and cement grinding, all the way to storage of cement in silos. Work in the control room is done with the aid of an expert control system, which requires lots of computer equipment. The control room is the control center for monitoring emissions of the cement plant and control center for safety procedures for the whole factory. Zaključna faza proizvodnje cementa je mletje klinkerja, gipsa in dodatkov v mlinu cementa. Dodatki pri mletju so lahko tuf (oz. pucolan), žlindra, elektrofiltrski pepel in apnenec. Gips dodajamo za regulacijo vezanja, saj bi se cement brez dodanega gipsa v prisotnosti vode takoj strdil in ne bi bil primeren za vgrajevanje. Trboveljska cementarna proizvaja več vrst cementov, ki zadovoljujejo različne potrebe uporabnikov cementa, in se med seboj razlikujejo po vrsti in količini dodatkov, zato imajo različno trdnost, obdelavnost in čas vezanja. Klinker in dodatke meljemo v cevnem mlinu. Za mletje uporabljamo kinetično energijo krogel, ki se sprošča v mlinu zaradi njegove rotacije. For milling the kinetic energy of grinding balls is used, which is released in the mill due to its rotation. Cement, which meets the requirements of fineness, is transported and stored in cement silos.
