that hurts. We’re in a tough situation. What

we can control now is how we play today

against a tough Cleveland team. We have the

opportunity to win to get to 10-6. We’re going

18 BALTIMORE RAVENS GAMEDAY PROGRAM

In remembering the Baltimore Ravens’ historic Super Bowl XLVII run, one cannot forget the AFC Divisional contest against Peyton Manning and the highly favored Denver Broncos. Despite the tension and emotion surrounding a game that would ensure the winner a slot in the AFC Championship, Ravens guard Marshal Yanda remained calm. A self-described creature of habit, Yanda approached this game the same way as any other, partaking in a ritual that has never changed.

Before entering each series in a game, Yanda sprays water in his face to become alert and energized before stepping onto the field to face an opposing defense. Despite the sub-zero, freezing temperatures in the Mile High City that January evening, Yanda soldiered on and did not stray from his usual routine. Over the course of the game, however, the water began to freeze on Yanda’s face and chest. The iciness became so intense that Denver’s defense asked officials to check the icicle formations on his beard and jersey, thinking they might create an unfair blocking advantage.

For Yanda, this is part of his personal formula for performing at a high level every week. And by sticking to that formula, Yanda believes that while he cannot control the highs and lows that inherently happen in each game, he can control his approach and preparation. It’s a mindset that has defined the three-time Pro Bowler for his first eight seasons in the NFL.

QUIET CONFIDENCEOne of the most arduous, yet exciting times for NFL rookies is their first training camp when they adjust to new coaches, teammates and game plans. In 2007, after being selected by the Ravens in the third round of the NFL Draft, Yanda met this challenge head-on and embraced the grueling process meant to perfect his craft.

Yanda’s intensity on the practice field – as he adjusted to the speed of the game at a pro level – did not go unnoticed. Ravens general manager and executive vice president Ozzie Newsome recalls how Yanda began to build his reputation as a hard-nosed lineman early on.

“You would watch him go up against some of our defensive linemen – and the thing about it was, he probably hadn’t gained enough strength at that point – but he was always a fighter. He was always battling,” Newsome says.

In addition to fighting his way through blocking assignments in between whistles, Yanda took notice of the drive and technique of his fellow offensive linemen, highlighted by Mike Flynn, Adam Terry and Hall of Famer Jonathan Ogden. Yanda credits these men with teaching him how to hone his skill set in order to become a fundamentally sound player.

Page 20: RAVENS GAMEDAYprod.static.ravens.clubs.nfl.com/assets/pdfs/gameday/...The Ravens have teamed up with Caption Colorado to provide closed captioning for the hearing impaired at Ravens

20 BALTIMORE RAVENS GAMEDAY PROGRAM

“I think he does it with a quiet confidence, too,” Newsome explains. “We coined the phrase ‘Play Like a Raven’ because of players like Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis, but Marshal brings another element to it in that he just shows up every day, does his job, and you can depend on him.”

Combining his natural instinct to strive for perfection with the lessons taught to him by veteran players, Yanda became one of three rookies who earned the opportunity to start on the Ravens’ O-line that season. He also quickly began to solidify himself as one of the most reliable teammates in the locker room.

THE TEAM. THE TEAM. THE TEAMOutside the Ravens’ weight room at the Under Armour Performance Center is a sign that reads, “The Team. The Team. The Team.” The phrase is often used by head coach John Harbaugh to instill in his players a sense of camaraderie and brotherhood both on and off the field.

“I think it means you have a sense of accountability to yourself for the team as far as doing your job at a high level and being able to be counted on in the tough times when the game is on the line – play in and play out,” Yanda expresses.

This sense of accountability has come to define Yanda. He thoroughly prepares himself to stand alongside his brothers, facing any set of circumstances that may be thrown their way throughout the course of a season.

“You know that you can count on him, and you know that you’re going to get 100 percent from him every single time,” affirms quarterback Joe Flacco. “He takes it personal and wants to be there for the team. He’s just a guy that I can trust and respect, and when you have that guy right next to you, you don’t have to be too worried. You’re very confident, and you feel very secure in the fact that he’s there.”

How dependable are Yanda and his fellow linemen in facing talented defenses? In 2014, the revamped front five have consistently protected their Super Bowl

Page 21: RAVENS GAMEDAYprod.static.ravens.clubs.nfl.com/assets/pdfs/gameday/...The Ravens have teamed up with Caption Colorado to provide closed captioning for the hearing impaired at Ravens

BALTIMORERAVENS.COM 21

MVP quarterback, who is on pace to set multiple career highs and produce one of the best seasons ever by a Ravens’ signal-caller. Led by Yanda, the O-line has also paved the way for Justin Forsett to run for over 1,000 yards for the first time in his career, placing the running back among the league’s top rushing leaders.

The quiet and habitual way Yanda has performed his job has been instrumental in setting the expectations high for exactly how a Ravens’ offensive lineman is expected to perform.

FOCUSING ON TODAYEmbodying steadfast commitment not only to himself, but also to his teammates, Yanda has steadily made a case for becoming one of the franchise’s all-time greats. So much so, perhaps an induction into the Ravens’ Ring of Honor is not out of reach.

When asked what it would mean to one day have that distinction bestowed upon him, Yanda thoughtfully answered, “I’d be very fortunate if that ever does happen, but you have to take care of today, and you have to take care of this Sunday. When I get done playing, I can reflect on that.”

While he is grateful for the success that potentially comes along with a storied career in the NFL, Yanda won’t allow himself to become distracted by these types of thoughts.

“I think these games are so important that you can’t sit and dwell on [individual honors]. If you get that in your mind, you start thinking about how good you are as a player, and you slip a little bit. All it takes is just a little bit to slip, so you try to stay locked in at all times.”

With this outlook, Yanda has maintained the same blue collar mentality since he arrived in Baltimore, allowing him to remain fiercely focused on today, all while preparing for his next opportunity to play the game he loves ... with icicles or without.

NOTE OF THE WEEK: MILESTONES

Here is a list of personal and franchise milestones the Ravens could set today against Cleveland:

OFFENSE

• The Ravens (389 in 2014) need 10 more points to set a single-season franchise record, breaking the 398 mark from 2012. Baltimore also needs 4 more TDs to set the franchise single-season record, which currently stands at 47 (2009 campaign).

• The Ravens (5,419 in 2014) need 305 more yards of offense to set a single-season franchise record, breaking the 5,723 mark from 1996. Baltimore (323 in 2014) also needs 16 first downs to surpass the single-season franchise record of 338 from 1996.

OLB ELVIS DUMERVIL

• Dumervil needs just 1 sack to set a personal single-season career high, besting his 17 from 2009 and this season (a Ravens’ record).

QB JOE FLACCO

• Flacco (25 in 2014 and 2010) needs 1 TD pass to set a career high.

• Flacco (3,674 in 2014) needs 326 passing yards to hit the 4,000 milestone for the first time in his career and second time in Ravens single-season history (Vinny Testaverde had 4,177 in 1996).

P SAM KOCH

• Koch, who is averaging a 47.4-yard gross average and a 43.5 net average can set the Ravens’ single-season records for each category. (Current bests are Koch’s 47.1 gross and 40.8 net marks from 2012.)

WR STEVE SMITH SR.

• Smith Sr. (four in 2014) needs just one game with 100-or-more receiving yards to break the Ravens’ single-season record of four held by himself, Mark Clayton (2006) and Michael Jackson (1996).

• Smith Sr. (975 in 2014) needs 25 receiving yards to hit 1,000 for the eighth time in his career and become the 11th Raven to do so.

The Baltimore Ravens recently completed a two-year, $35 million improvements project to M&T Bank Stadium, which includes audio/visual upgrades and new concourse features that enhance the gameday experience for fans.

“We are pleased with the results of our stadium upgrades,” Ravens vice president of stadium operations Roy Sommerhof said. “The initial improvements last year were well-received by our fans, and those who sit in the upper level will really take notice to the recent changes in our stadium.”

The renovations began in the spring of 2013 with “Ravenized” concourse designs, new high-definition video boards at Gates A and D and remodeled concession stands in the stadium’s lower level. Over the past several months, the project’s final phase focused on upgrading upper deck amenities.

Recent improvements include the addition of two specialty bars on the west side of the building as well as four new portable upper level retail stores. Improved cell phone service will also be accessible, as Sprint and AT&T are now included on the stadium wide DAS network.

Along with improving all general lighting and directional signage, the installation of new color changing LED fixtures will provide aesthetic to the building’s exterior.

Also, inside the stadium, four large LED screens measuring 6 feet tall and 22 feet wide have been added to the upper concourse.

The concession stands have undergone complete restoration with all new equipment to provide quicker service, higher-quality foods and expanded menu items, which will be displayed on digital menu boards. Complementing the concessions, all upper level condiment stands have been replaced and re-designed to provide wider selections in a more ergonomic layout.

The club level artwork has also been refreshed to present a display of the Ravens’ two Super Bowl seasons, detailing the franchise’s proud history (image below).

Throughout the holiday season, Ravens players, coaches and staff look forward to spreading hope and cheer throughout the Baltimore community. It marks a special time of year when the Ravens take pride in their tradition of giving back, especially to those who have fallen on difficult times.

For the 10th-straight year, the Ravens continued their legacy of hosting Holiday Helpers, an event that was established by former Ravens WR Derrick Mason.

Every year, a current Ravens player takes the lead to carry on the event’s tradition. While only in his first year in Baltimore, WR Steve Smith Sr. was this year’s honorary host.

Ravens teammates and cheerleaders joined Smith Sr. at the Target in Owings Mills on Dec. 15, serving as personal

shoppers for the 60 Baltimore-area children during the event. In addition to the shopping spree, the children enjoyed a complimentary pizza party provided by Papa John’s, a holiday-themed cake, musical entertainment and Ravens goodie bags.

The Ravens’ holiday spirit of giving didn’t stop there. On Dec. 22, the Ravens joined Giant Food, the official supermarket partner of the Baltimore Ravens, to provide dinner baskets that included a turkey and side dishes to 175 families from the Weinberg Family Center YMCA community. In addition, Ravens players held food distributions, visited underprivileged youth and participated in numerous toy drives.

12/15 Ravens WR Steve Smith Sr. hosted the 10th annual

Holiday Helpers event at the Target in Owings Mills. Ravens

players and cheerleaders served as personal shoppers for 60

children during a shopping spree.

outreach efforts, please visit baltimoreravens.com/community
