“I’m an American, I drive a Corvette and nobody’s going to tell me what I can drive. I own lots of stock in Mobil and I know there’s plenty of oil for the next 100 years. After that, I won’t be around… But I’m all for sustainability!”

BS 8901
Sustainability Management Systems for Events
What is BSI and BS 8901
• BSI Group was founded as the Engineering Standards Committee in London in 1901
• Became the British Engineering Standards Association in 1918, adopting the name British Standards Institution in 1931 after receiving its Royal Charter in 1929.
• In 1998 a revision of the Charter enabled the organization to diversify and acquire other businesses, and the trading name was changed to BSI Group.
• Operates internationally in 147 countries. • Core business is standards and standards related services• Revenue now comes from assessment and certification

What is BSI and BS 8901
• BS 8901 is the British Standard which has been developed specifically for the events industry.
• Provides a framework of good practice and defines the requirements for a sustainable event management system to ensure an enduring and balanced approach to economic activity, environmental responsibility and social progress.
What is BSI and BS 8901
• Certification involves:– Independent audit, by an experienced and competent body such as BSI Management Systems, of the system under which your events or event activities are managed and confirms whether the sustainable event management system meets the requirements of BS 8901.
– Event organizers and suppliers will have their systems assessed for the planning, implementation and reviewing of their activities in accordance with BS 8901.
– Certificate to BS 8901 is issued allowing the event organizer or supplier to claim that they are BS 8901 compliant and the event owner or event organiser to claim that an event has been managed in accordance with BS 8901.

Creating a Green Rating Systemfor the Entertainment Industry
BS 8901
• Phase 1 – Planning – About planning the event and requires an organization to define its
policy and commitment to sustainable development. Identify key stakeholders, the sustainability issues and set key performance indicators for improved event sustainability.
• Phase 2 – Implementation– Define responsibilities, ensure staff are sufficiently trained and
competent and provide sufficient resources to implement and operate your event management system. It also requires you to manage your supply chain.
• Phase 3 – Check and Review – The final phase is about monitoring, measuring and evaluating the
event in relation to the management system and the objectives set, and then taking action to continually improve event performance.
BS 8901
• Phase 1 – Planning – Define policy and commitment to sustainable development. Identify key stakeholders, issues and set key performance indicators.
• Phase 2 – Implementation– Define responsibilities, ensure training and provide resources to implement.
• Phase 3 – Check and Review – Monitor, measure and evaluate and then taking action to continually improve event performance.
• Rinse, and Repeat!

BS 8901
• Does not dictate specific practices but provides methodology for creating one’s own
• Focuses on managerial tools like defining objectives, performance level, criteria and consistency, using key performance indicators (KPI) to measure progress, and documenting results.
• Sustainability “should be an integral part of the event management process, and not regarded as an ‘add‐on’component,” and that “its influence should extend throughout the entire supply chain.”
• Targets the higher goal of redefining event management.• £120 per copy = inaccessible for grassroots events, it
attracts high profile companies such as Live Nation.
BS 8901
• Live Nation, the world’s biggest concert producer, became an early adopter
• Production Manager Andy Pearson frames the decision in terms of savvy business advantage:– “Sustainability might not be a massive issue now but I think in the next few years it will become one. If you fail to do something now, you will find yourself in a position of scrambling to catch up, or simply out of business.”
• Other high‐profile implementers of BS 8901:– Conference organisers EC&O– sports venue the Lord’s Cricket Ground– Major arts event the Manchester International Festival.

BS 8901
• Other major event producers see as an opaque document• Ben Challis, lawyer Glastonbury Festival, co‐founded A Greener
Festival in 2006 as an informational resource and an awards scheme to promote and validate outstanding Green Events.– He was unimpressed by an early copy of BS 8901, saying that," It was
the most appalling document I had ever seen. Fifty pages of nonsense and a really good spreadsheet. It was unreadable, and we knew full well that no small festival would ever use it at that stage. It is bureaucratic. It provides the processes, and that is what British Standards can be like.”
• Argues it created in a vacuum, without proper input from actual producers of Green Events.
• Unlikely that the document will target smaller festivals.• Being refined to serve a greater geopolitical purpose, what event
scholars term a “mega event,” the London 2012 Olympic Games.
BREEAM
BRE Environmental Assessment Method
LDI Green Day 2010Sponsored by Showman Fabricators
10/21/2010
Creating a Green Rating Systemfor the Entertainment Industry
How does BREEAM work?
• BREEAM assesses buildings against a set criteria and provides an overall score which will fall within a band providing either a; PASS, GOOD, VERY GOOD, EXCELLENT or OUTSTANDING rating.
• BREEAM rewards performance above regulation which delivers environmental, higher comfort or health benefits.
How does BREEAM work?
• Energy: operational energy and carbon dioxide (CO2)• Management:management policy, commissioning, site
management and procurement• Health and Well being: indoor and external• Transport: transport‐related CO2 and location‐related factors• Water: consumption and efficiency inside and out• Materials: embodied impacts of building materials• Waste: construction resource efficiency and operational waste• Land Use: type of site and building footprint• Pollution: external air and water pollution• Ecology: ecological value, conservation and site enhancement

Creating a Green Rating Systemfor the Entertainment Industry
How does BREEAM work?
• Credits are multiplied by an environmental weighting factor which takes into account the relative importance of each section.
• Section added together to produce overall score.
• Translated into a rating on a scale of:Pass ‐ Good ‐ Very Good ‐ Excellent – Outstanding
• A star rating from 1 to 5 stars is also provided

“The museum industry has shown great interest in the green movement,
but without a consistent standard
of measurement there can be no way
to compare the relative “green
value” from one exhibition to the
next.”
OMSI Green Exhibit CertificationOMSI Green Exhibit CertificationAn industry-specific green rating system.“Innovation Station” began process– 80% of materials either recycled or reused at end-of-life– but: no good way to measure results or compare strategies
Inspired by LEED– point-based system– developers reviewed Materials & Resources LEED requirements
Optimized for museum industry– reduced paperwork (minimal staff, low op budgets)– simplified none, some, most, all distinctions (0-4 points)– categories & requirements directly address exhibit issues
Ongoing development & refinement– Need at least1 year of Utility Data & other metrics

The ChecklistThe ChecklistRapidly Renewable Materials
Does the exhibit use resources that renew themselves quickly in nature?
Resource ReuseCan exhibit materials be reused in the future? Have exhibit materials been used
before?
Recycled ContentDoes the exhibit use recycled materials?
End-Life AssessmentWhat portion of the exhibit can be reused at the end of the exhibit?
Low-Emitting MaterialsDoes the exhibit use low- or zero-VOC paints, adhesives, and sealants?
Certified WoodDoes the exhibit use wood that has been harvested by environmentally-managed
forests?
ConservationIs the exhibit designed for energy efficiency?
Regional MaterialsDoes it use regional materials and reduce environmental impact from materials
transport?
Can we apply this thinking to entertainment Can we apply this thinking to entertainment projects?projects?I think it’s good!
Pro•This approach could be optimized for entertainment facilities•Easy to use templates encourage participation & minimize cost•Can be used as an ‘overlay’ on a LEED project•Encourages collaboration throughout industry
Con•Non-technical rating system may encourage oversimplification•Would not contribute to benchmarking energy and waste metrics•Doesn’t deal with the rest of the facility•We’d have to do the work to make it up!
