Rate

A rate is a ratio that compares two quantities with different types of units.

An example of rate is $5 for 2 pounds or 130 miles in 2 hours.

Unit Rate

When a rate is simplified so it has a denominator of 1, it is called a unit rate.

Cuando una tasa se simplifica por lo que tiene un denominador de 1, se llama una tasa de unidad.

An example of a unit rate is $6.50 per hour, which means $6.50 per 1 hour.

Comparing Unit RatesA unit rate tells how much something is per unit.

For example, if apples are 2 for 30¢, to find the unit rate, you would divide the price (30¢) by the quantity (2).

30¢ ÷ 2 = 15¢

So one apple is 15¢

A good consumer will compare the unit rates of items to find the best deal by determining which item has a less expensive cost per unit.
