The arrival of Spring

can be a mixed blessing for we Rats. Less snow, drier trails and fewer chances to

gear-up and get deep down and dirty in the great outdoors. Drat. But there’s always the silver lining: we’re at the start of a whole new year of epic events and the longer days and (possibly) better weather mean we can go further, faster and higher. And the daffodils are nice, too.

If you’ve been training through the fell fury of winter to get ready for one of our stern endurance events, or getting into shape for one of our running adventures, we salute you. The fun starts soon! In fact, our events are proving so popular that we’ve had to add some

2011, the Soldier Challenge returns in 2012. True to form, the Rat Race team have teamed up with ABF The Soldier’s Charity to bring you another day of fun and unusual events in the centre of our capital city – and all for a good cause.

This summer we’ll be raising the standard and

sending a call to the legions of ultra-Rats out there to come and sample our latest epic challenge. We’re setting up our first ultra-run in the wild frontier lands of ancient Roman Britain: Hadrian’s Wall country.

Starting from Carlisle Castle and covering 69 miles of astounding countryside, the course will end in the centre of Newcastle in the shadows of the Tyne Bridge. Around 1000 Rats can tackle the course in a single day; as a relay; or as a two day double marathon challenge with an overnight encampment (bring your own shield). Are you ready to join the legion?

It’s a simple enough idea: start at one side of Scotland. Keep going until you hit the

There are some triathlons which claim to be the

toughest in Britain. This one does not claim.

City to Summit is a brand new iron-distance triathlon. The concept is to link the Forth Seashore at Edinburgh with the Summit of the UK’s highest mountain; Ben Nevis. The action commences with a 2.4 mile sea swim and then moves to a stunning bike ride along 112 mile of dramatic

Scottish roads, snaking its way into the heart of the Scottish Highlands. The final transition sees participants don running gear to tackle a 26.2 mile run or trek to the summit of Ben Nevis and back down to terra firma.

As with all Rat Race events, the epic scale of the challenge is matched with options that enable you to tackle the event as a “competer” or a “completer.” The Expert

category will see athletes take on the full-serving in 1 day, whilst the Challenger category will break the journey into 2 and will throw in an overnight camp in Glencoe, allowing you the opportunity to enjoy some of the scenery, whilst braving this truly awe-inspiring challenge.

If you’ve ever encountered a group of people happily exercising in a city centre

near you, you might have stumbled across one of our Urban Gym training sessions...

What’s it all about?

The Rat Race Urban Gym offers group exercise classes all year round throughout Spring, Summer, Autumn and (yes!) even Winter. Sessions are circuit-based total body workouts combined with short running sections. Like most circuit training activities our Street Circuits are as demanding as you want to make them, but never fear - our Urban Gym Instructors are on hand to give you that extra push if you need it! (Or if you just want it, pain fans.)

What happens?

Sessions last for an hour and cover a total distance of 2.5km, broken across several shorter runs no longer than 350m each. The main emphasis of our sessions is placed on the exercise stations, which might be anything from a fountain to a park bench.

The Urban Gym is for everyone, so we cater for all fitness levels. Beginners proceed at their own pace, while participants with higher fitness levels are constantly offered additional runs, extra exercises and tougher progressions to increase the intensity of their workouts.
