About Rashtriya Samaj Vigyan Parishad (RSVP)

Rashtriya Samaj Vigyan Parishad (RSVP) founded in 2008, duly registered in

New Delhi under the National Registrar Societies Act 1860, is a national scholarly

association devoted to the cause of learning, revising and reconstructing the

subjects of social sciences in consonance with classical Indian thought and

philosophy. In a threadbare introspection and deliberations conducted by 100

renowned Indian Social Scientists in Rambhau Mahalagi Prabodhini, Mumbai in

2008, it was observed that despite several decades of independence from

colonialism ‘intellectual servitude’ still permeates the academic arena of our

country. Whether it is economics or sociology, history or politics, the

predominance of Eurocentric premises, assumptions and philosophical

postulates have led to large scale mimicry in teaching and research, which often

are irrelevant to Indian socio-cultural realities. Unfortunately, despite India’s rich

tradition of indigenous knowledge, the concepts of social sciences and the ideas

related to the various disciplines have not been based upon it. Indian values,

philosophy and culture are scarcely reflected in the subjects of social sciences and

nor has social sciences holistically contributed in generating a spirit of national

pride. Therefore, it was unanimously decided to create RSVP in order to address

these issues through a proper reorientation of social sciences which could cater to

the structural dynamics and functional subtleties of Indian society in particular

and the world at large. Ever since, RSVP has been engaging seriously in

augmenting the reversal of the analytical gaze, which hitherto has been from the

west to the east and normally privileges the former. In its attempt to strengthen the

indigenization base of social sciences in India, RSVP has been organizing

conferences, seminars, workshops, symposia and intellectual appeals across the

country. RSVP engages in fostering collection, interpretation, analysis and

dissemination of data on social science resources and also promotes native

scholarship to galvanize the nation building process. Linking social sciences

knowledge effectively to public policies and local needs in order to improve the

quality of people’s lives, is also its major purported aim.

“We owe a lot to the ancient Indians, teaching us how to count. Without which most modern scientific discoveries

would have been impossible.” – Albert Einstein.

India is one of the ancient civilizations in the world, spanning a period of more than 4000 years, and witnessing the fusion of

several customs and traditions. These customs and traditions reflect the rich culture and heritage of the country. Sages, seers,

scholars and scientists have contributed a lot in upholding the glory of this land. It is dismaying that most of these ground

breaking accomplishments are still unknown to most of the people. Renowned universities like Nalanda and Takshashila

were great achievements of ancient India in the field of education. India is an abode of many religious sects, cultures,

languages and many ethnic groups. Most of the languages in India owe their indebtedness to Sanskrit which is one of the

oldest languages of the world and the literature produced in that language is a treasure house of knowledge.

Notwithstanding the above, concept of development and policy planning in India since independence have been largely

molded by ideas and ideals borrowed from the West. This influence can be witnessed in the economic, political and socio

cultural sphere. Excessive dependence on western ideology has not only resulted in the creation of hybrid identity, but also

given rise to fragmentary and centrifugal tendency inimical to the building up of stable and prosperous Rashtra. Rather than

contesting the 'universalist' claims of Eurocentric concepts, categories and constructs, much of our social sciences literature

has drawn uncritically from them. The dependency syndrome in the academia is doubtless, structural and psychological due

to our historical experience of external invasions and colonization. While the Mughal and Turkish invaders destroyed our

pre-eminent centres of knowledge, burnt down libraries and universities, the British developed an education system designed

to “frame” Indian mind in the colonial mould.

Eventually, the natives began to revere the West and think worse of themselves in terms of Orientalist concepts. In an attempt

to develop an alternative analytical framework rooted in Indian systems of thought and values, the Rasthtriya Samaj Vigyan

Parishad was founded. The RSVP in collaboration with Tumkur University, Karnataka, proposes to hold its 4th Annual

Conference on ‘Indegenization of Social Sciences’ from 13th -15th December 2019. The Parishad aims to provide a unique

platform for academicians, young researchers, students, area specialists and subject experts to work collectively towards

contextualizing and indigenization of social sciences research in the country based on Indian literature, philosophy and

spirituality relevant to entire humankind.

Sub-themesThe conference would comprise the following sub-themes. The Sub-themes are not exclusive but merely suggestive to help

open-up broader horizons of research, papers alluding to related issues would also be included.

About Tumkur University Tumkur University, established in the year 2004, has gained significance as one of the young universities in the country and has been recognized as an institution of higher learning at par with high profile national institutions. It is a State University, established to cater to the educational needs of Tumakuru and neighbouring districts where the majority of students hail from the rural background. Ever since its inception, the University has been witnessing tremendous growth in the development of its academic profile and infrastructural facilities. Within a short span of thirteen years, the University has been successful in being recognized as an Institute of National Eminence by the UGC. The gleaming history of the University owes its glory also to eminent scientists, Nobel Laureates, Spiritual Leaders including the 14th Dalai Lama who have visited the University. Our students and faculty have also been immensely benefited by their interaction with scientists like Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and several other thinkers and educationists
