A VALUABLE EXPERIMENT

Mr Herbert Purvis gives in thePlanttt Monthly an account of anextensive experiment he is making incinchona cultivation at KukuihaclcHawaii He took a skilled gardenerwith him from England to Ceylon in1883 The gardener he placed on acinchona estate to give him a knowl-

edge

¬

of the cultivation while he visitedthe chief cinchona districts of theisland What he saw and learned convinced him that cinchona would thrivein large districts of these IslandsTherefore he brought home with him aquarter ounce of seed for which he paidxA the rate of 100 an ounce It was

of an exceptionally good variety yield-

ing¬

in Ceylon from n to 14 per centof crystallized sulphate of quinine onanalysis whereas Mr Purvis believesthe richest bark elsewhere knownyielded less than 4 per cent He re-

turned¬

to Hawaii in October 1883and at once began operations to startcinchona groves Having selected asuitable situation in the forest aboveKukuihaele at an altitude of 2000feet a small clearing was made inSeptember 1884 and the first batch oftrees was planted out They are nowso well advanced that he was able totake bark from all the different kindsfor analysis a short time ago andhoped to hear of a favorable resultvery shortly In 1884 Mr Purvis ob-

tained¬

seed from a reputable varietygrown in the cinchona region of theAndes South America He gives anaccount of progress made so far in thefollowing paragraphs

After a great deal of delay causedby scarcity of labor we got an area often acres cleared of forest near theclearing before mentioned on a gen-

tle¬

slope and now we have all ouryoung seedlings planted out to thenumber of about sixteen thousandiooo all of which are now thriving

and looking remarkably well Thetrees ought to be sufficiently old togive their first crop of bark in abouttwo years time

I have now expended over 3500including cost of visit to Ceylon butexclusive of all interest whatever onthe establishment of cinchona cultiva-tion

¬

in Hawaii and have every reasonto believe that it is a success Shouldit prove to be such it would throwopen a vast extent of land in the Hamakua Hilo and Kona districts onHawaii and also on Maui which areabove theline of sugar cultivation andat present lying useless

The man who makes valuable treesand plants grow in former all but use ¬

less wilderness is a decided benefactorto these Islands More of his stampare needed to place the Kingdomabove the influence of all vicissitudesto the few products upon which it nowwholly relies

PENSIONS

The door being effectually openedby the present Legislature a rush ofpension bills may be anticipated atsubsequent sessions Admitting thatlength of public service makes a validclaim for pensions there should atleast be some system in bestowingthem Probably the precedent estab ¬

lished ensures all the older civil servants now in harness ari Carly retire-

ment¬

on pensions But for the yoUHgerportion of the service a superannua-tion

¬

law ought to be passed underwhich a slight percentage of salariesshould go to a pension fund MrDoles bill may not have been com- -

prehensive enough but it was a movein the right direction It was at allevents far preferable to the promiscu ¬

ous method adopted by the houseEvery improper influence now has

scope for its exercise in both tlie initiation and disposal of pension billsApart from the question bf grantingpensions at all it must appear to everycandid mind that the giving of nearlythree times the annual gratuity toPrincess Poomaikclani which was

voted to the two veteran public servants whose cases were passed uponwith hers was as gross a piece of favoritism and discriminating legislationas ever any law making body committed

NOTES AND COMMENTS

Ihnvc nothing to advertise Thereis no business doing That is justwhy you should advertise our dearsir

It is a pity more notice cannot begiven when water is to be shut off in

any locality An advertisement issuedonly the evening previous to a shut off

at six in the morning is taking housekeepers rather short

It appears that the repairs to KukuiPlace arc unfinished so that criticismis premature Moreover the work is

being done by Mr George Lucasat his own expense and is one of themany evidences he has given of public

spirit We therefore move to amendthe complaint making it a complimentinstead but would enter a demurreragainst the application of the familiarproverb about judging unfinishedwork

Yes let us have more watering carts

and stop the nuisance of hose practice

at every corner for half the day How-

ever

¬

if ever the streets are paved so asto stand a thorough daily sweepingwith modern implements for that pur¬

pose the public health will be betterconsulted by dampening the streets as

little as possible Medical opinion we

have been told is strongly against hav ¬

ing the stretts kept wet under thetropical sun
