It depends on the type of materials. For instance stainless steel material, the spread is about 2 - 3m, for carbon steel about 70 - 80m. Higherattenuation will lead to longer distance of each sensor

challenges to do so.

Mr. Jeremy Yeo Sze Yew It depends on the objective of the inspection and available budget. MsS is cheaper and has the capability to detect thinning location while AE “noise” is always a concern.

Have Shell experienced and witness the self-healing effect of the viscoelastic material?

Mr. Hafiz Zakaria Yes. Shell witnessed the testing before through a trial session. It took up to a day to self-heal the defect at ambient temperature.

What is the performance of inorganic zinc coating under insulation?

Ir. Dr. Mokhtar Che Ismail Under reverse polarity >60 degree Celcius, zinc will become cathodic. It is recommended to refer to NACE SP0198 to understand more on the precaution of using inorganic zinc.

based sensor (RBS)?

Ir. Dr. Mokhtar Che Ismail For small RBS used in laboratory, the usage is limited to surface area for minimum 1mm pipe thickness.

insulation?

Mr. Rehan Ahmed Non-contact insulation is not very effective. Some form of contact is desirable especially in cyclic condition.

Ir. Dr. Mokhtar Che Ismail Testing of new coating can be done with the existing laboratory facility in UTP. However, it requires protocol that is able to simulate the actual environment e.g. ASTM 189.

study on insulation during design stage?

Dr. Lee Chee Hong It is essential to be extra careful to identify or design out the potential CUI during initial stage (eg. desktop/ modelling study).

Q10. Question submitted via whatsapp What is the latest industrial insulation painting available in the market? If yes, any tests being performed?

Mr. Benson Soon Metal coating is used to protect the metal material. NACE SP0198 prefers multi-layer hybrid coating to protect insulation. So far, only water based ceramic coating is used with certain limitations. However, there is no testing done thus far.
