    Sighi oara

The aim of this report is to present the excursion to Sighioara. At this trip took part

    participants.

We left Predeal a t 7:30 and the arrival in Sighi oara was at 9:30. From the Congress place to Sighioara is about 150km, so about 2 hours by car.

On our way to Sighi oara we visited Rupea Fortress.

At arrival Ovi presented Sighi oara Citadel and gave to participants information aboutthe city, like: history, number of inhabitants, places, and monuments.

After that the participants had free time for 1h and a half.

We met in front of the Clock Tower and started our city tour. The Clock Tower islocated in the eastern part of the Sighioara Citadel. It was built to protect the main gate of thecitadel, to host the City Council meetings, and for keeping the archives and treasures ofSighioara.

Built in the 14th century, the tower has a double barbican to control access into thecity, ramparts, watch road and shooting galleries, and four towers that symbolized that the cityhad judicial autonomy.

The construction is based on a rectangular prism, with five levels, and has a height of64 m.

The roof was destroyed by a great fire in April 1676 but was rebuilt in 1677. Thegeneral form of the roof bears the seal of the Baroque style and has a height of 34 m.

Since 1899 the tower houses the Museum of History.

After visiting the Clock tower the next stop was at Covered Staircase .

The covered Staircase is a very old stone staircase with a wooden roof along the whole

span. This leads up to the Church on the Hill and the cemetery. Also known as Students` Staircase it was built in 1642 and it had 300 steps. It has been

obscured to protect children, who followed this path to high school J. Haltrich. As a resultof changes now are left just 175 steps.

We went through the Covered Staircase and we arrived at The School of the Hill, which is one of the oldest schools from Transylvania.

This is mentioned for the first time in a document from 1522. Its existence is,however, long before that date because, according to transcripts of the University of Vienna,

the institution's courses were followed during 1402-1520, by 95 students. Here were taught theology, philosophy, classical languages (Latin and Greek), music,

mathematics, astrology. In 1901 another floor was added to the existing building, on whichone can read inscriptions in Latin.

The last place we visited was The Church from the Hill .

Awarded with the current Grand Prix Europa Nostra for restoration and strengtheningof structural and European Union Award for heritage, the Church on the Hill has reached the

present form over a period of several centuries. The construction begun in 1345, but wasmodified in 1429. The Church came to a final form in 1506. It was repaired after each damagecreated by natural phenomena or attacks.

After visiting the church we go back to the city and the bus through the cemetry.
