RAPIDOBAT® Concrete technology

IntroductionThe literature gives a wide range of instructions for the production and assessment of concrete surfaces, where specific demands on the surface appearance are made, on what are generally known as “exposed concrete surfaces”.

A truly objective assessment of the completed structure is generally a difficult undertaking. Practice shows that the assessment can often be completely different in the respective views of clients and contractors.

Even when the greatest care is taken, the final result can be one that does not do justice to the expectations arising from the construction contract.

In particular, anomalies can occur during construction using in-situ concrete and smooth, non-absorbent formwork. In addition, irregularities in the exposed surfaces cannot be completely ruled out, even where additional effort is made.1)

The concrete surfaceThe exposed concrete fact sheet recommends the use of one or a number of test surfaces for exposed concrete class SB2 and higher.

These tests allow:

■ the quality achievable under true on-site conditions to be determined;

■ technical procedures to be developed or verified;

■ the necessary effort to be specified and optimised;

■ personnel to be instructed.

If the properties of a test surface are agreed upon as a binding standard for acceptance, the surface is referred to as the “reference surface”.

Factors such as uniform colouring, pore formation and flatness in the formwork skin butting zones (burrs, offsets) are assessed. The subsequent observation distance is, of course, taken into consideration in the assessment, as well as the knowledge that minor irregularities in the texture and colour are characteristic of concrete and specimens therefore cannot be reproduced without some deviation.2)

Concrete

1. Placing and compacting the concrete

The production of simultaneously pourable and high-strength concrete requires the use of plasticisers. In order to prevent poor reactions, such as rapid loss of consistency, segregation or excessive delay in

strength development, more detailed understanding of the interactions between plasticiser and cement or concrete is required.3)

Only after compacting and finishing the concrete acquires its final surface. The concrete should be placed and compacted in layers not more than a maximum of 50  cm thick in order to ensure that any trapped air bubbles can escape. The necessary compaction duration depends on the concrete consistency. If compaction is too short, the concrete

grout cannot penetrate into voids and the result is gravel pockets or large cavities. If compaction is too long, the concrete settles and the danger of “bleeding” increases. The concrete surface displays considerable differences in colour and cloudiness. Additional compaction in the upper column region is recommended.

2. Concrete finishing

The value of good finishing should not be underestimated. It clearly contributes to an improvement in the quality of the concrete surface. It enhances the impermeability and the compressive strength of the concrete surface region.

The shuttering tube, once removed, can be replaced around the column to protect the reinforced concrete columns from mechanical damage. Rapid, differential concrete cooling can also lead to permanent differences in colouring.

1) Source: DBV Fact Sheet 2) Source: BetonMarketing3) Source: vdz Recommendations

One of the greatest uncertainty factors when using ready-made concrete is residual concrete or water remaining in the drum mixer following previous transport. The result is excess water, which leads to concrete bleeding.

Practice also shows that in an attempt to prevent cavity formation on the surface of the concrete, the concrete formulation can often fall victim to “overreaction”. That is, the aggregate fines and the cement component are exaggerated, generally leading to a poorer result.

RecommendationsThanks to constant quality control and test concreting using RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tubes, as well as maintaining close communications with building

sites, H-BAU has gathered positive experience with the following concrete composition:

Aggregates:

Sand 0 – 4 40%

Gravel 4 – 8 20%

Gravel 8 – 16 40%

Cement 310 – 320 kg

Filler 40 – 60 kg

Water/cement ratio w/c 0.50 – 0.55

RAPIDOBAT® General information

The product

H-BAU’s RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tubes provide a column formwork system for easily and economically manufacturing round and rectangular columns. The casing tubes consist of multi-layered, extremely robust paper and cardboard rolls.

In addition, the shuttering tubes can be specially treated depending on the demands on the exposed concrete and the architect’s requirements.

A number of designs are available:

Advantages

■ Tried and tested: manufacturer of highest quality column formwork for more than 20 years.

■ Integrated ripcord for easy stripping.

■ Recyclable material.

■ Keeps its shape even in driving rain.

■ Matching capitals and bases available.

Application areas

Using RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tubes, combining architectural freedom with structural feasibility presents no problems.

Simple erection, concreting and stripping allow economical and rapid construction.

Depending on the client’s wishes, the columns can be produced with a barely visible spiral marking for subordinate structures such as cellars or underground car parks, for example, or for high-quality exposed concrete columns, such as those used in residential buildings.

RAPIDOBAT® Application notes

Transport

■ Avoid pressure points.

■ Do not stack pipes too high.

■ Cover damaged outer liners generously with adhesive tape.

Storage

■ Store vertically where possible.

■ Ensure a level, clean substrate for horizontal storage.

■ Avoid high stresses.

■ Keep dry.

■ Protect from rising damp.

■ Keep cool.

■ Provide ventilation when covered.

Preparation

■ Adapt column reinforcement, including spacers, to suit column formwork, ensuring that the inner surface of the shuttering tube is not damaged.

■ Remove any pools of water around the column.

Erecting and aligning

■ Check RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tube for damage.

■ Always erect shuttering tube with arrow pointing up.

■ Immobilise the bottom of the shuttering tube, e.g. using a wooden annulus. Refer to Page 19.

■ Align shuttering tube with the aid of RAPIDO-Clamp, type D, M or P. Avoid pressure points.

■ Cover the top of the shuttering tubes with plastic sheeting until concreting begins.

Concreting

■ Place concrete using filling hose.

■ Place concrete in 50 cm layers and compact using internal vibrator.

■ Compact each layer and needle to underlying layer.

■ The wall thickness of the RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tubes means they are designed to withstand all the vibrations and stresses imposed by an internal vibrator.

■ Caution: Do not vibrate externally!

Stripping

■ Strip formwork after approx. 48 h.

■ Open shuttering tube using ripcord.

■ Carefully cut the cover liner in the region of the ripcord using a knife.

■ Wind the ripcord around a hammer shaft and pull vigorously.

■ Open the shuttering tube and remove it. The shuttering tube can then be repositioned around the column as protection.

Disposal

■ RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tubes can be disposed of in the paper recycling unit.

Application notes for RAPIDOBAT® Cretcon HD

■ Score the Cretcon HD coating along the former location of the ripcord using a knife to create a predetermined breaking point.

■ Push an insulation anchor or a plastic nail – also referred to as a pine cone – up behind the Cretcon HD coating and pull downwards.

■ Do not use sharp objects.

Opening the Cretcon HD coat-ing, e.g. using a plastic nail (pine cone)

Securing the RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tubes

Up to a shuttering tube length of 5.00  m the shuttering tube can be secured using a single guy plane. Additional guy planes must be used for shuttering tube lengths greater than 5.00  m. If heavy tension-compression props are used for guying, we recommend installing additional, short pieces of shuttering tube beneath the RAPIDO-Clamp elements. This prevents pressure points on the shuttering tube and the concrete column.

Lower supports

The lower RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tube support can be easily provided by a wooden annulus (may be cut using a template), tightly surrounding the outside of the pipe. Where larger formwork diameters are used, we recommend providing the shuttering tube with an approx. 10 cm high wooden annular base.

RAPIDOFIX was specially designed for aligning the RAPIDOBAT® Square and Rectangle models: simple, practical, good. Refer to Page 17.
